Unfortunately, Lindsey is using the wrong light source for this dish, and I'm surprised given her reputation. A beauty dish - any beauty dish, relies on having an open tube to make it work properly. The Profoto D1 light Lindsey is using has a flat glass face, and this will never work very well. Profoto do make a rather useful dome diffuser that can be fitted to the B1, D1 and D2 strobes, (note not the B10 range) and this gets quite close to the open tube effect. By using the flat face, you'll end up with a few issues... Firstly the light isn't going to fill the dish as well as it should, and you're only going to fill it largely with the light bounced back from the centre disc. (This is not how this modifier was designed back when Profoto only ever made open tube style strobes, which work beautifully with this dish). Secondly, because the light on a flat-face designed strobe is primarily leaving the strobe in a forward-only direction, quite a bit of that light actually misses the centre disc entirely. This gives a rather unpleasant hot ring of light which can easily hit your subject. I speak from bitter experience with my first shoot using a flat face D1 and this dish, where I struggled with a rather uncooperative hot ring if I angled the light too shallow. So at all times, you're only going to get a decent result if you have a dome on the front of the light instead of a flat face, or if you use an open tube design. Now people will most certainly be able to get good results because if you place the light just right, you can work around the issues of Lindsey's flat-face strobe. But you'll get better results and have more flexibility if you have that dome or an open tube. Alas Profoto's metal beauty dish was never designed for these modern flat-faced strobes. I compared it using my own D1's (with domes and without), to a Profoto ProHead (which has an open tube design). The light from my D1 with a dome was just fine, but the light from the ProHead combo was wonderful. Note my D1 without the use of the dome was the worst of the three). Now I have quite a bit of Profoto gear so I'm certainly invested in their gear. And I have one of these dishes which I do use. But I discovered a dish that works absolutely beautifully with a D1 style strobe plus a dome, and that's the Wescott Rapid Beauty Dish. (You can get it with different fittings). Used with the diffusion dome on a D1 head and with the centre disc placed only 1cm away from the front of the dome, you can get a result very close to what I saw from the ProHead and the Profoto beauty dish. And it has the benefit of being collapsable. So certainly take on board what Lindsey teaches here, but know that you really do need a Diffusion Dome on those flat-face strobes to make any dish work. :)

Except she charges for her tutorials pretty hefty for someone who is an assistant to Chris Knight and the assistant she uses in this video is some old man that has a corner in his basement and calls himself a photographer. What Im trying to say its all blowing smoke, selling a story to people that know nothing about photography or are very beginners. But actually she herself is not at all a good photographer and is still an assistant.

Not a great lesson. Either it's a bad beauty dish or the photographer doesn't know what she's doing. She never got rid of the hot spot on the forehead. The beauty dish is supposed to provide a smooth, crisp, glamorous light source. That is why it's called a beauty dish. None of these results made the model look more glamorous. Very strange.

the inside reflector is on backwards. The convex side goes towards the light so it bounces the light in a even circle around the dish, using the concave side will only throw the light back at the light source. I thought a "professional" would know this.

It's all about the relative size of the light source compared to the subject. A 150 cm octa is a massively small lightsource when shooting a semitruck but a large lightsource for a person's face. This size relation is a function of both actual size and distance of the light source from the subject.
