Straws + beer koozie + glue = A DIY grid for your speedlight.

Just one note: I used a basic white blue instead of the Krazy glue pictured at the beginning of the video. The glue used for this needs a little more flex when dried than Krazy glue allows.

To calculate the length to cut straws to for different light angles, use this formula: L = D / tan(θ) where L is the straw length, D is the straw diameter, and θ is the desired light angle measured from the center axis. For example, if you have straws with a diameter of 6.5mm, then these are the lengths you need: 7.7mm for 40 deg grid 11.3mm for 30 deg grid 17.9mm for 20 deg grid 36.9mm for 10 deg grid

So much better than other options I have seen. This one I will attempt and I think two will be made since I will have all the materials. Thanks for sharing.
This one is excellent. I made one out of a pringles can and straws. I want to try this out ASAP as i love to DIY most of my photography gear.
Hey very nice idea! Final product looked good as well. Nice job.
wow,the best diy videos on the tube,,,good job,,,hope to see much more of your work,,,,thnx
Great, the beauty dish was great to. I really can appreciate this kind of creativity.
Great job, found all the supplies I needed just Like you said.
you guys ROCK!!! I just came from the bar.
great job man
Nice work dudes!
Great DIY guys! I was wondering how the white glue was holding up for anyone who's used it and/or if anyone's found anything better for this application.
1. use a hot glue gun - it will last longer and give you more time to work. 2. give the finished glued-together straws a short blast of FLAT black spray paint. this will cut down the light reflected off the smooth surface inside the straws. great video!
This is really cool. Do you have some sample pictures taken with it?
Awesome. Was the Krazy Glue used for wrapping the black board with the beer cozy? Thanks. Keep the vids coming!
I actually switched to a more standard white glue, as the Krazy glue was too brittle. However, it's not necessary to use glue on the cozy, it's snug enough that the grid stays in there pretty solidy.
any problems with the straws melting?
great tutorial but def missing sample pics, would have really completed the video
his do you have a list of the products used I don't know what the foam item is called
What's the black ¿map? you're using in order to have a better end product than with a cereal box? thanks
Do you think those straws will have any issue with melting after continuous shooting?
Im from italy and idk where to find a beer koozie.. so what alternative would you suggest for beer koozie?
@lalalaina4life An Elmer's-type glue should work just fine. Super glue is a little too brittle to work, so you need something a little more flexible.
Thanks! off to Panera I go :)
I bought all the raw materials including mat board. In case anyone wants to know - I got the skinnier black straws from Target (cocktail straws). Panera was kind enough to help me out with the bigger ones even thought it was embarrassing to ask. I cut up the straws but my super glue would not work. I went to a home depot and purchased Gorilla super glue, which didn't work either. Thanks for sharing this video, but Please Help!!!
Mais, où trouvez-vous ces pailles noires ?
you didn't heard that from me lol
