Use a $30 Reflector for Professional Portraits
We took on the challenge of shooting an entire fashion shoot with just an iPhone and a couple $30 reflectors as a follow up video to the FStoppers iPhone Fashion Shoot. The SLR Lounge iPhone Photo Shoot has gotten a lot of attention and we thought it was time for a follow up video.
So, in this follow up video, we will be showing you guys the exact reflector lighting techniques that we used to pull off every shot that we took in the SLR Lounge iPhone Photo Shoot.
However, we will be using a legit camera this time. This time we will be using our 5D Mark II along with a 50mm 1.4 Prime Lens. But, trust me that you can pretty much get these exact same shots with virtually any DSLR body with a 50mm 1.4 Prime Lens attached. Below the video, we have listed out all of the equipment and software used to create these shots. So be sure to check that out as well.
Enjoy, and as always, let us know what you think!

Great video! It would definitely be more helpful if you put both the before/after pictures right next to each other for easier comparison:)

No kidding this was the most annoying thing about this video.
am I the only one that didn't like the photoshop edits?

I didn't, post production has gone way out of control!

I like what he did here but I thought his Photoshop edits shifted the images color balance a bit too warm.

@robertcorse Robert, go to the link shown in the description. It details out every piece of equipment used in the shoot, including the exact size/brand of the reflector (a 40in/101cm Westcott)
Some advice on the presentation: You made it very difficudifficult to compare the pre and post reflector lighting. You REALLY needed a back to back comparison- on the same screen or literally riiiiiiiiight after each other

Hey guys, we are migrating the site at the moment to deal with increased traffic, if you get a 404 link to the article, it will be fixed over the next few days. Thanks for your understanding.
Nice tutorial. You are showing your knowledge and you are doing it professionaly without BS - not just pretending that you are pro as many others do.
It's always good to see quality work made with a minimum of gear. Thanks for the blow by blow!
Thank you very much for this great tutorial! I have had people telling me that the only way to fill the harsh shadows in on a subject was to use a flash. The reflector method produced the exact results I have been looking for. Again, thank you!
My guy Pye, so I’ve been building a playlist of good learning tools as I develop my skills and its cool to see your grow as a teacher and how you interact with the audience.
I hope you do more of these. I really enjoy seeing you outside in the field and not just infront of a monitor.
Thank you for the video. I'm no pro but your skies are blown out
Thanks! Very helpful! Super excited to use my reflector this evening! :)
Oh thank you so much, this was very helpful! I have a reflector, and use it often, but have been having trouble using all of its features to enhance my outdoor shoots! Thanks again!
This is a great video..I use these reflectors as well and this advice will really help with future shoots. Thanks for being very simple and direct.
@mioulilovelife Haha, I remember you! Yeah, I speak Chinese/Cantonese. I have been a professional photographer for a while, even when we met ;). I will have to do a follow up Chinese video sometime soon. Thanks for the comment! ;)
Thank youuuuu for the tip. Wearing flipflop in video shoot = badass
You are a natural teacher. Thank you.
Is really nice to see the contrast of the pictures without and with the reflector, nice video Thank you
Thank you for this video. I am an aspiring professional photographer. Started taking photos at age 14, but didn't connect doing photography as a business until now, Doing something I like and getting paid for it is a great thing.
Thank you so much!!! This is exactly what i was looking for...now that i bough a reflector kit!
I liked the last shot best. Nice video, thanks.
i actaully love your videos.. very informative, with just a phone on your hand you can create a very astonishing photos! Great Job!
@maymaiv1 I am shooting Manual on a 50mm lens. Which is probably one of the best lenses you can start with. But, really you can shoot these on anything, 50mm, 70-200, 85mm. Shooting on a prime (fixed focal length) at a low aperture is what is going to give you that really buttery soft look in the bokeh (blurred background).
Thank you for this video! Beautiful results!
exactly what i was looking for!cheers for sharing and greetz from austria!:)
instead of using the reflectors, can one use a on flash diffuser to get the same results?
thanks ...for the "reflector tutorial"...well done very clear...plus light room and Photoshop post treatment.
I really like most of the photos prior to edit!
Nice to see the different results - thank you!
would you rather use a flash if you have one? just wondering as to when a flash would be better vs a reflector. thanks!
OMG I see you everywhere at KZread. You speak CHINESE PERFECTLY and now you do photography..? I met you at LAS VEGAS before...man.. you are awesome.
I liked this video. I don't mind the Photoshop edit. Nice job!
This was super helpful! Thank you!
Great tips and lovely photos - thanks for sharing... :)
Wonderful job! Very thorough and wonderful images!!
that was GREAT thank you for doing this! excited that I found you and subscribed :)
Well said Jonathan, frogs knows only to shout, doesnt know to think how valuable it is! BTW Great Video & thanks for sharing with us :)
well done. Many thanks! One suggestion ...side by sides of the before and afters. Found myself running two sessions so I could stop and compare them. Also wondering what was needed in Photoshop since the effects shown in the PS edits look like they could have been achieved in LR as well.
Thanks for this very clear and useful lesson!
@EnigmusSnake No filters of any kind were used.
The Lightroom edited shots look better IMO. Great video!
I agree. It was hard to compare the results with a side by side
Excellent video, learned a lot in 6 minutes!
Simple and effective, well done!
really nice job showing some different lighting effects.
Short and sweet. Thanks for the tutorial.

Nicely done thank you, clearly explained. Was this shoot just outside of Salt Lake City?
It would be nice to see the camera settings along with the finished photos :o) I'd like to know what apeture/iso and shutter speed you used on each of these shots. great video!!
Pye, Great tip thank you. Would mind sharing what you camera settings at for these shots or what would you recommend?? Im a beginner and i am having a hard time trying to me settings/ exposures etc correct. Also what lense are you using? What is recommded for photos like these?

Reflectors can be found for cheaper prices for those who are on a super tight budget or who beat their equipment to death. I've seen 32" reflectors for less than $12, and 42" for less than $17. Even better, you can just make your own. I've used everything from t-shirts to foam core board.
Great vid n nice tutorial.
Great info, I think it would help to have a side by side display of the results. Well done thanks! The edits in my eyes are a preference thing, they dont help me so much.
What lens and camera are u using in this video? Pretty nice photos even without edits! Cheers!
What a fantastic video.
Agreed
Thanks for the great video. Awesome advices.
thank you. great video
magic
Very helpful, Thanks.
Thank you!
Thanks for the video!!!
Very useful info thanks for sharing..
thanx for your reply.... i finally purchased a 5d m3 kit .... :)
All I was wondering was is Jessica going to get blown away? Great shots and the reflectors certainly opened them up, but wouldn't gold have made them warmer for outdoor shooting.
Killing it with photoshop
I agree with some of the other commenters about the post production work. I didn't like them either. I would have used a warming filter on those shots.
Why is there such a deference between you Photoshop and Lightroom Edit? They should be pretty similar.

+Dottie Lopez Photoshop is a much more powerful tool. A lot of people tend to overdo the editing with it.
it's the fraction between the focal length of the lens and the diameter of the lens. it starts with f. the closer it is to 1 the better.
If you're concerned with IQ and low-light performance, the 5DMkII is plenty camera, which would allow you to invest in appropriate glass for your setup. The 7D is also a great camera, but more geared towards crop sensor sports performance. It's a very big investment for a hobbyist, and glass would probably be the better purchase if money is an issue, and you aren't super concerned with profits...
Great video, thanks!
thank you for the advice :D
If it's a cloudy brightness, this can be fixed easy with photoshop. Just open it up in Photoshop and adjust the exposure, adjust Gamma, etc.
wow, thanks
great job!!
using a 50mm lens on a non full frame camera will be the same or i will have to use another lens?
Much appreciate
great video and beautiful model!
