How To Machine Polish Hard Clear Coat Paint - Chemical Guys

• How To Remove REALLY D...
Machine polishing is known as the “art of detailing.” A skilled detailer can restore paintwork by removing scratches, swirl marks, and defects from clear coat paintwork. Using a machine polisher takes many hours of training and years of practice to master the art. Today in the Detail Garage, Master Detailer Greg Masterson uses his years of professional polishing experience to restore the hard clear coat paintwork on a jet black Cadillac Escalade. Many automotive manufactures are using ceramic and scratch resistant clear coat finishes for increased durability. The harder clear coat helps increase the lifespan of the vehicle, yet is very hard to polish and remove defects. In this video, Greg cover the full process on how to remove swirl marks and scratches from hard clear coat paintwork using a dual-action polisher and a rotary polisher to remove the defects, and restore the shine. Enjoy the video!

I was a little scared at first but the VSS seemed to work great. I do have one question, with such a large vehicle, is it necessary to switch pads about halfway through? I felt like my orange cutting pad was filling up with dead paint and polish and possibly loosing its effectiveness. Thanks, and I cant wait to use more of your products in the future

    We do not recommend removing orange peel from vehicle with factory clear coat. Wet sanding orange peel from the surface will make the paintwork extremely thin, thus reducing the lifespan of your vehicle's paintwork.

    ***** It seems to remove roughly the same, or maybe just a tad more, than regular machine polishing. The issue is you have to be VERY careful. One mistake will take your 2000 grit to 1000 grit (or around that), if you are not completely even and methodical in your application you can do some serious damage to the paint, not REMOVING the clearcoat but you can put defects in so deep that you will not be able to completely remove them. Also it takes a lot of work to actually remove all traces of the wet-sanding process in all angles. You also need to be careful around panel edges, swage lines, etc. Most of the time I find that if you want to remove the orange peel, using the orange peel removal pads from the likes of CarPro are probably the best compromise.

    Hi Adam, thanks for watching. Swirls marks occur from improper polishing, heavily abrasive pads and marks created by rotary buffer trails. I recommend you pick up V36 and V38 with an orange pad and white pad. Start by polishing with the orange medium cutting pad, followed by finishing with a white pad. Unless you have really hard paint, the finishing polishes should be enough to remove the swirl marks. The goal is to always jewel the paint to make sure the paint is smoothed so that no imperfections can be visible. Stay tuned Adam, we've got more great videos coming your way. C.G. Alex -

    For someone who has never polished a car before, if you're going to do a two or three step polish. Are you supposed to do (for example) a 2×2 section of v34 then jump to v36 in that same section? Or do the whole car with the first step, then go back and do the whole car with the second step polish. Then go back for the finishing step?

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    9 жыл бұрын

    samuel cabrera It's most efficient to polish the entire car with one step, then repeat with the next step, then finish with the last one. Switching between different compounds and pads after every pass wastes time, and heavier compound dust can potentially scratch other areas that are already "finished." In this video, Greg is just demonstrating the process that he would eventually use over the entire vehicle in one test spot. We're not about to spend 30 hours filming one video lol.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    The only correct way to fully remove orange peel would be to fully wet sand the entire car (1000-3500 grit) and then do a 3 step machine polishing job to remove the scratches. This is a lengthy process that can often take 50-90 hours of labor. On factory cars, we do not recommend wet sanding to remove orange peel because modern factory clear coat (specifically Japanese brands) are very thin, and wet sanding can drastically reduce the life of your factory paintwork.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    Hey Eric, we get that question a lot. The Digital Display on the TORQ uses shorthand to display the actual OPM speed at which the buffer head is spinning. After 00, the six speed settings of the machine spin at: 1) 15 - 1,500 OPM 2) 20 - 2,000 OPM 3) 25 - 2,500 OPM 4) 30 - 3,000 OPM 5) 35 - 3,500 OPM 6) 40 - 4,000 OPM. When the detailer in the video refers to speed setting 6, he means 6 + clicks, or 40 on the digital display. They are the same speed.Thanks for watching, Eric, and stay tuned for a new video launching tomorrow!

    Hey! Awesome video! I have a few questions. I live in Hollywood and all of the quality detail shops near me charge $75 an hour for labor, which means I need to either do it myself or I need to earn $150 an hour before taxes to pay for their services. So I decided I'm going to be doing it myself. And I've never done this before. So I spent a week watching all of your guys videos. Then I bought the Chemical Guys BUF501X kit with the Torq 10FX, orange, white and black pads and V32, V34, V36 and V38 for $208 on Amazon, delivered next day. I washed my car today, used Clean Slate, Decon Pro iron remover and then used an Eagle 1 surface prep mitt (I've seen reviews that say it works as well as clay). After the Eagle 1 mitt, about 70% of the grit was gone by using the cellophane test. So I used the mitt for a second pass and a third pass. but even then, 10% of the bumps were still there. Maybe it's just not as good as clay? But since I hadn't ordered any clay, I decided to move forward on my black, 2011 Audi R8. It has been garaged, but it regularly goes to "hand" car washes instead of a real detailer and it has swirls and scratches for days. It also spent its first 5 years of life on 2 different leases and probably never saw any real care before I bought it earlier this year. So I started with a test spot that is about 1/3 of the front hood. I'm a novice, remember? I wanted a big flat spot to learn how to do this without burning a hole through the clear coat going over a crease or running into my carbon fiber vents on the rear deck. I started with the orange pad and V36. Nothing. Then I went to orange and V34. It made a difference, but the scratches were still clearly visible. Then I went to orange with V32. The paint was definitely getting dull from the coarse cutting compound, but I could still see scratches. So I did a second pass with V32. Still scratches. So I came to KZread to see if I can solve this problem. I landed here because you address black cars and hard paint. It looks like the answer is to use a rotary buffer. But I am a total novice and rotary buffer horror stories are what kept me going to pro detail shops when I needed paint correction. I got the Torq DA because of all the reviews that say that you can't seriously damage your paint with a DA. I am 1) scared to use a rotary and 2) I don't want to buy another expensive piece of equipment that will only get used every 2-3 years. So how do I get through the scratches? I was moving faster with the DA than you were with the rotary. I was afraid of hurting the paint, so I kept moving. The compound eventually dried out and started flinging clumps, but it never became clear. Is that because the DA doesn't do as much work on the clear coat? Should I go slow with the DA like you did with the roatary? Also, my 10FX has speeds labeled 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40. Why is that? When you say you used speed 6, that is the same as 40, right? Since rotary isn't a sound option for me from a novice skill level and the price point, how would you suggest I proceed to get the scratches out without damaging the paint? Thanks in advance!

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Larz! You've got all of the right tools for a proper paint correction, I suggest working in smaller sections, about 2 x 2 so that the polish won't dry out. That's what causes it to clump up and fling. Using 5 dime sized drops will prevent build up and messes. Also, don't be afraid of a dual-action, you can move slower than with a rotary. The DA has built-in safety features that prevent you from burning and marring it. I recommend moving about an arm speed of 1 inch per second. As for speed, spread on 15 and polish on 40. If you need a more aggressive cut, use a microfiber pad. To note, some scratches may be too deep that they may require color sanding but we don't recommend a novice attempting it. If you need further advice, feel free to contact our customer service department. customerservice@chemicalguys.com Welcome to the Chemical Guys family! -CG Javier

    Larz I wish I could help but I am novice to. Sounds like your paint is hard .you don't need to use a rotary just use microfiber cutting pad, there "the safer alternative to wool pads" so they say. You know old school wool pads they used back in the day on rotary machines because the paints were much harder . These days there different. Hopefully you fix your problem cheers

    Lucas Ornelas Thanks! That is great advice. Javier mentioned microfiber above, but I didn’t really take it to heart because it was couched in “you have all the right equipment for a good paint correction”. I shelved the project last weekend to get some advice. It also gave me a chance to see my car in daylight and the area I worked on with V32 and the orange pad still clearly has scratches, even though it looks a lot better than the untouched area next to it. I have a couple of bottles of cquartz ceramic coating I want to put on it, so getting all of the scratches out now makes the most sense. I’ll order up a microfiber pad for this weekend because I’m sure that it will save me a significant amount of time when it comes to covering the entire car. I’m happy you chimed in. I’ll post again this weekend after trying the microfiber pad.

    Recently tried to use the Porter Cable DA to remove swirls and scratches from some hard clear coat using an orange pad and ended up melting through my yellow 5" backing plate. Is this common with a DA? Ordered a new one yesterday, but bummed that the backing plate actually came apart and turned to goo on the backside of my pad. Is there a better backing plate for my DA? Sounds like I need to invest in a rotary to speed up the cutting process.

    Hi, thanks for watching. Be careful with a rotary because you run the risk of burning the paint. I would recommend starting with V36 and an orange pad, and then following up with V38 and a white pad. If that doesn't work, use V36 and a yellow pad, and follow up with V38 and a white pad. More than likely this combination should produce the desired results.

    Hey Kenneth, how's it going? If V36 and V34 aren't cutting it, we always suggest switching to either a Yellow Cutting Pad, or a Microfiber Cutting Pad. It's not always the strength of the compound or polish used, but rather the combination of machine/pad/chemical. All paint is different and V34 with a orange pad might not get as much scratches out as a less aggressive polish like V36 with a microfiber pad. So there is no cookie-cutter answer that will work for every car out there. What there is, though, is a method. We have a method for selecting the best combination of machine, pad, and polishing compound for any car we may detail. Could you have used the rotary to take the hologram away?

    Yes, most imperfections are removed when the clear coat has been removed, and the paint is later refined using a paint polish designed to restore shine and clarity to the paint. Rotary polishers are very powerful tools in the right hands, but they can also damage the paint if proper polishing techniques are not employed correctly. The best way to get good results it to start with a less aggressive approach first to see how the paint reacts, and then move onto a more abrasive pad and compound combination.

    Chemical Guys so I have a DeWalt 6/7 in rotary polisher. Would you suggest putting a 3 or 4 in backing plate and pad on it for the tight spots?

    The smaller the pad, the easier it will be to maneuver the machine around body panels and tight spaces. C.G. Alex -

    Yes, it's difficult to see swirls in natural sunlight. Very frustrating. Then, under a parking lot lamp, I see it and cringe.

    Greetings Ron, We still use VSS whenever humanly possible. The last time we used it was on this Honda Civic video in April. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fHV2krJvj5azhdY.html

    One question to CG crew - Greg especially. Why haven't You used IPA to inspect the paint after cutting or polishing the paint? For me it looks like You've covered the defects with polishing products and wiping with a microfibre towel simply does not show everything.

    V-Line polishes do not require an IPA wipe-down because they do not contain fillers or adverse chemicals that cover swirls. V-Line polishes are also body shop safe.

    No true-cut polish fills and hides swirls or scratches. True-cut polishes, like the V-Line, use particle abrasives to remove the topmost damaged layers of paintwork and reveal the perfect, shiny paint underneath. The products with swirl-filling capabilities that you are thinking of are glazes. You can learn more about Chemical Guys glazes, like Black Light and White Light on our website!

    Rewatch the video and pretend that you're a blind person, he explains every step to the point where even a blind guy could do it. "I'm going to set my machine polisher down and grab my microfiber towel." Lol. Totally understand why you do that (cause there is extremely stupid people out there) but just found it funny :P

    A properly used rotary can easily polish out swirl free. Save your money and learn how to use a rotary. They are cheaper, far more versatile from cut to polish, and can use multiple sizes backup pads.

    this guy has no clue what he is doing!!..i have been detailing for over 25 years and i can blow holes in all his ideas and thoughts..who the hell puts the rotary with a pad attached on the floor!!!..your trying to remove scratches not introduce more!!..yes it seems this clear coat is hard, but an identical vehicle, same year, same color, same make and model could have a softer clear coat..trust me not all GM products are hard to compound..again this man is just misinformed and has very little experience, and his own methods and thoughts about clear coats proves it!!..he is a salesman and not an authority i would go to for professional detailing help or wisdom. i would love to see him use a rotary with a wool cutting pad on the entire vehicle but trust me the client wouldn't...lol
