How To Choose The Right Compound Or Polish For Your Car - Chemical Guys V-Line Of Polishes

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Chemical Guys manufactures compounds and polishes to take scratches and swirls out of paintwork. Machine polishing a car will remove scratches, and restore clarity, gloss, and shine to the reflection.
Every paint finish is different, though, so choosing the best polish or compound for any car is part science, part art form.
The Chemical Guys V-Line of compounds and polishes covers the full spectrum of extreme compound to final polish to make any painted finish look its very best.

V32 Extreme Compound is best reserved for extreme oxidation, heavy swirl marks, and deep scratches on harder paint finishes. V32 is also great for restoring clarity to wet sanding marks on paintwork and plastic headlight lenses. Follow V32 up with V36 or V38 to refine the finish and restore full clarity to any painted finish.
V34 Hybrid Compound is a versatile high-abrasive polish. Use V34 to remove moderate to heavy swirl marks, scratches, and harder paint finishes, then refine away any compounding haze with V36 or V38.
V36 Cutting Polish is a fantastic swirl remover and versatile polishing compound. Try V36 first to determine the paint finish hardness and extent of the damage. V36 breaks down to restore gloss and shine after removing swirl marks, and sometimes you don't even have to follow up with V38 for full reflection.
V38 Final Polish refines compounding haze and marks left from heavier abrasives of previous polishing steps. Use V38 to restore full gloss and reflection to painted finishes at the end of a 2 or 3 step polishing job.

    It depends on how much paint you want to remove. Its safer to remove light paint. The orange pad cuts a lot. I have yellow pad. And for this kind of cars is better to use light cutting, on chevy or fords you can cut heavier like v34 with yellow pad. I use v32 just in windshield.

    You guys often increase video speed on these videos where we actually need to see how fast the tech is really moving. Please stop using music and 2x or 3x speed to fast forward through the actual technique -- it's arguably the most important part of the video. We're not bored. And if we are, we can increase speed on our end.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, thank you for watching. We often speed the videos up because polishing takes a long time, and we have to do quite a bit of editing to get it cut down to a manageable size for uploading to you tube. Polishing is an endurance test because you have to work slowly with a dual action polisher because it doesn't generate the same amount of heat a rotary polisher does. Here's some advice I would give to someone starting out, star with a dual action polisher like the TORQ X, lightweight and easy to master. Tape off a small area on the hood or door panel (2'x2') apply the pad of your choosing to your machine, dab five dime sized drops onto your pad, press the machine to your paint to get the polish onto the paint, then put the machine on the paint where you're going to start. Start the machine at speed setting one to spread the polish, move from left to right, right to left as you make your way downwards with fifty percent overlap. Once the polish is spread out, start polishing by setting the polisher to the max setting while the machine is still on the paint. Slowly work your way from side to side, gradually moving downwards, and working in reverse when you've finished. You can move in any direction as long as you're working in straight lines. As far as chemical and pad goes, you'll have to determine how severe the scratches are to your paint. Always start with the least aggressive approach before you start using abrasives because the clear coat is very thin. The exception is when you're working with really tough paint that doesn't respond to compounding, in which case you'll need more aggressive pads, and you would have to switch to a rotary polisher.

Where my wife’s vehicle definitely need a good compounding (7yr old vehicle that has never been detailed), my truck is only 3 years old and in good condition. It really only needs a good polish but there are some area that need a bit of compound (deeper scratches). Am I able to compound or cut more in certain areas Or is that leaving uneven paint/clear coat?

    Idk about anyone else but if I end up with the results he got from the V36 after polishing I feel pretty upset and like the job isn't done. Recently tried the V34 and my car came up about the same as in this video which I was very happy with. Only difference I found vs these was that I couldn't get the V38 with white pad to remove the marring from the V34 and orange, so I had to do a step of V36 in between the two for best results. Overall really happy with the product once I start using something abrasive enough to get the results I want

    After a lot of field testing, I settled on the green pad to cut, blue to polish, and red to seal. Even though the green is softer, it cuts really well - often more than the yellow and orange, for me. Because the pores of the green pad are larger than that of the orange and yellow, the loops behave like like little scrubbers with abrasives attached to them, where the yellow and orange uses density to mash the abrasives into the surface. That's what is nice about the pad line - you have the green, blue and black American foams, and yellow, orange, white, and red European foams.

    Thanks for watching our video. The hex pads are amazing because they tackle nearly any type of job, variation of paint thicknesses, and severity of scratch and swirls. I like your description of the pads, very detailed. It takes a certain level of understanding to be able to choose the right pad, many people struggle with this because of lack of experience. Do you do professional detailing as an occupation? Keep up the great work, and send us some pictures, we'd love to see your results. Stay tuned, more great content on the way.

    Chemical Guys Thanks! I polish paint part time, but I've been at it for almost 20 years. I used to use a rotary for the cutting and polishing steps. In 2011 I finally picked up a PC 7424xp, some Hex Logic pads, and megs ultimate line. On my very first job with the orbital I struck through with the green pad! 1998 - 2011 using a rotary without burning of strike through.... That made me a believer. I was also able to remove 1000 grit on a medium paint with that same combo. Great line for sure. I might do some videos next month demonstrating some different tools polishes and pads.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    You're very brave, some people are afraid to pickup a rotary because they've heard stories of how easy it is to burn through paint, that's why we always advocate using a dual action polisher. I personally enjoyed using the rotary polisher, however I did keep it in the back of my head that the rotary is a powerful machine. I'm fairly new to polishing, I definitely could benefit from more hands on experience. I really enjoy it though, there's a deep connection you get from detailing, it's very relaxing. Not sure if you guys still check comments on this video. But I have v36 and v38. I'm going to ceramic coat a new car i just bought. Generally you should polish before you ceramic coat. But since the car is new. As in just rolled off the factory floor, I'm not sure if I should bother with the polishing step. Just clay bar. I'll check under a light to see if i can find any scratches. If so. Would V38 and a white pad do the trick on a new car to prep for ceramic? I'm just thinking v36 and a orange pad might be a little much for a new car.

    Great video and very well presented. Can anyone tell what polish actually does? Does it just "sand" down the clear coat to get rid of scratches? He keeps mentioning the paint but this isn't getting down to the actual paint, only clear coat, I think.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ty, thank you for commenting and reaching out to us on our comments section. Compounds contain abrasives that wear down the clear coat to eliminate deeper scratches. Polishes contain smaller amounts of abrasives that refine the paint to restore shine. Imagine that the paint looks cloudy on the surface, and the polish helps to remove whats on the surface of the paint to create the appearance of fresh looking paint. If have any more questions, feel free to ask them here or on the Chemical Guys Facebook page. Stay tuned, we're launching a stellar new video that you won't want to miss. C.G. Alex -

    Another great informative video. I notice that in the one section you had alot of dry compound spray off and coat the hood. I have had this happen also, I am just not sure why, is it from over use of compound, pressing to hard, to high of speed or catching an edge and cause the compound to fly off the pad. I cannot do 6 on my porter cable as recommended and I notice more of the spraying can happen at the higher speed so I always cut back to 5 max. Keep up the great work. Thanks

    Compounds have heavier abrasives that dust during use. V32 and V34 dust a lot less than older compound technologies, but it is still expected. To keep your polishing results neat and tidy, always finish one polishing step over the entire vehicle before moving on to the next step. For example, that is: Orange Pad-V32 over the entire vehicle, remove the dust, then finish with White Pad-V38 over the entire vehicle.

I was polishing and noticed this as well is there a way to prevent that or is it normal? it seems to get worse later in my polishes. should I swapping out with a clean pad or clean the pad of drying polish?

    Heavier compounds dust as the abrasives build up in your pad. V32 and V34 use more refined abrasives that do not dust as much as compounds of the past. To minimize dusting, keep your pad lubricated with Pad Conditioner, and clean your pads after polishing 1 - 2 panels to reduce abrasive buildup.

    Sorry for the dumb question.. getting back into detailing... If I'm polishing after waterless wash & wax and clay baring.. can I use the same v36 orange to two separate different colored cars.. ones Black & the other car is Grey/Silver.. or do I need to buy more than one hex pad or cleaner to do multiple colored.

    if your asking if you can use one pad on multiple cars the answer is yes as long as you aren't transferring paint, you can take the chance but be sure to wash your pads first or just order a pack on amazon for $20 and save yourself from worrying.

    Great video! I still have a couple questions: 1. After you did V36 on a part. And you later find out V34 is better. Can you go over the V36 part without it looking different? 2. Can you re use pads?

  • @ChemicalGuys

    Hey J, thanks for checking out this sweet video. Starting paint correction with a less abrasive compound benefits you because it prevents too much clear coat from being worn away. If you notice the scratches haven't gone away, then you can proceed to use something with more grit to remove the deeper scratches that are scarring your paint. Polishing pads can be reused multiple times, and can last years without replacement as long as you maintain them. Clean the pads with pad conditioner and a small brush to remove spent polish from the grooves. If you don't remove the polish, it can crust up on the pad, and it will inhibit your ability to use fresh polish. Pad maintenance is paramount to getting good results, and prolonging the life of the pads. If you have questions regarding cleaning techniques, we have some videos that you might find useful. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGRl3Ndwp9itcZM.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGRl3Ndwp9itcZM.html C.G. Hello again Christian, thanks for watching. You have a couple of choices from us, there's the Rupes LHR15 MKII, and there's also the FlexL3403 which is a rotary, and more expensive. I'd say if you're just starting out polishing, get a dual action like a TORQ, the Torqs are modeled after existing polishers to improve upon functionality, and ergonomics. The Rupes has been in the industry for a long time, they're like the grandfather of sorts. Chemical Guys Alex.

    Hi Dee, The VSS is our one-step polisher that cuts strong to quickly remove swirls, scratches, and defects, which then finishes with a fine polish to restore a lustrous shine and reflection. After using your VSS, assess the situation of your paint and if you believe it can still use a better finish, we recommend the V38 for an ultra-refined final polish to enhance your gloss, depth and reflection. V36 or Orange Pad is a very gentle start to polishing. Don't do too many passes, and pay attention to your results and make adjustments if you notice anything untoward, like excessive paint removal or burn through spots down to primer. If in doubt, don't touch it. Dish soap etching can usually be polished from paint, but it can permanently stain textured plastic and rubber trim parts.

    can you use a different compound number like going from a v36 to a v32 on the same pad if you clean it between uses?

  • @bonermeister8191

    @bonermeister8191

    7 жыл бұрын

    If your question is can you use some V36 on a pad that you previously used V32, the answer is yes if you cleaned it between uses. Else, if your question is can you do a 2 step polish using V36 and then V32 then I would not recommend you to go from a smaller grit to a rougher one. This is just like when you sand wood or concrete, you want to go from rough to gentle in order to get the best smooth result possible.

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    6 жыл бұрын

    If your question is can you use V36 on a pad that you previously used v32, then yes if you cleaned it in between uses. To respond to Bonermeister's answer, it's actually backwards. You're going to want to go from gentle to rough because if you start with the toughest polish, you may accidentally more harm than good, for the paint may not need such a heavy correction. Now, if start if a lighter polish and test it out on an inconspicuous area, you can gauge and see if you like the results you got or you need to go tougher but never the other way around. You never want to add more work than you have to so if you accidentally add marring with the V32, you're creating more work you'll have to do to take those extra imperfections off.

    Hey chem guys I have bad paint so im starting with v32 and am a bit confused as to whether or not i need to gradually move up (v34, 6, and 8) or just pick one compound and one polish (v32 and v38?)

  • @ChemicalGuys

    @ChemicalGuys

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Daniel, thanks for taking the time to reach out. If you decide to compound, you will definitely need to finish with a polish because using a compound leaves buffer trails, you need to refine that area with a light polish to smooth out the paint. You're process should start like this: Start with V34 and an orange pad, if the paint isn't responding, then move to V32 with an orange pad. If the paint is very thick, you may need a yellow pad, which has allot of cut. Now that you've compounded, you'll need to polish, you can use V38 with a white pad to remove the swirl mark and reveal that fresh paint. Make sure to use pad conditioner before you start compounding to add lubrication to the pads. One word of advice is to always start with the least aggressive approach before moving onto the most aggressive approach. If you have any other questions, were here for you :) Chemical Guys Alex -

    Hey buddy, seems like you would be taking it a little too far. I think if you had some really deep scratches, you might want to start with V34 and an orange pad, and finish with V36 or V38 with a white pad. The only way to know for sure how much progress you've made is to try one product and analyze the results, a test spot is the best way to figure out which product to use next. You could always send some pictures to our Facebook account, we could give you more advice from there. C.G. Alex -

    Hi Burton, We suggest you clean pads regardless so as to prevent cross-contamination. Also, just to be on the safe side, if you go to a lower grit without cleaning the higher grit off, some of the particles of the higher grit may still be on the bad and you may be doing more harm than good. In detailing, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

    I have done the V36 with orange pad only. Looked ok but now I have purchased your clay-block V34, V36, V38, V07 and Butter Wet wax. To do my 2005 Black Tundra. Since I did the V36 before and then a black wax, and results where good this time I will do the V34 orange pad, V38 white pad and then after do I put on the Butter Wet wax? and if so do I use the white pad or do it by hand? And I also purchased the VO7 Hi gloss sealant, when do I use this? Can you tell me the proper order for all of these products?

  • @ChemicalGuys

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Greg, The best method you can use to ensure the best is test out your combinations in a small, inconspicuous area to see which result you are satisfied with. If the Black Tundra's paintwork require that tough of a job to warrant a V34 with an Orange pad, test it out in an area first. The Hi-Gloss sealant is best used as the finishing touch after a polish and wax. Follow our flow chart if you ever get confused. Follow the link below and check it out. Do I really need to get the trunk re painted I certainly hope not I think the rest V38 and V36 will handle but having a deep shine with a 6”x24” spot that’s got zero shine what so ever never looks right.... I’m not even sure the clear is all gone it’s just the only thing I can think of... I wish I caught this back when I bought her I could have had them pay for the repair
