    Sweet! I learned this technique about 5 years ago now and it has literally change my life LOL. Bring sonar, go to water 60 feet deep or deeper, keep your bait about 10 feet off the bottom and wait for something to show up. When it does, start taking it away and hold on tight! The only problem we have is getting good ice with this warm weather...

It was the first time my brother and I targeted lakers and we got into them. They behaved exactly as you described and the techniques worked perfectly. @@WhiteDogTrailCompany I agree last year was tough, I live in CT and most places did not freeze over last year, we also have no water that supports any Lake trout population. So most every weekend last year I drove to central Maine and targeted various species bit even there the ice got about half as thick as in most other years. Right about now I start getting excited and prepped for the season so I am hoping for the cold to come early. Great video. Thank you for the all the info. I have one question. I'm just starting out ice fishing and I usually prefer a bait casting reel to a spinning reel in summertime fishing. Is there any reason not to use a bait casting style reel in this application or is it just a matter of personal preference of the reel style?

  • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    4 жыл бұрын

    I know several people who use the bait casting reel. I suppose it is personal preference. The reason I like the spinning reels is I feel I get better smoother drag on the spinning reels whereas I feel that baitcasters tend to be a little more jerky when releasing line. If you have good smooth baitcasters then good! The other reason is I want to be able to drop that bait and deep it touch with it as it drops. I like my spinning reel for that and I control the line with my finger. I suppose that can be done pretty well on a baitcaster as well by lightly thumbing the spool and keeping the brakes set really light.

  • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    If you can use multiple lines do both. We can set tipups here so a lot of people will drop big dead bait on the bottom and jig at the same time. I haven't set tipups in a long time because we get so many more fish on the jig rod. But my guess is since your fish are so much bigger there are probably fewer of them? In that case I would probably do both to maximize my chances. Each lake will be unique. Tipups with dead bait tend to get bigger fish in my lake but we get way more fish by jigging.

    Ya know... I don't really set tip ups for trout... in fact I haven't set a tip up in several years if you can believe it. I know people do it but they are generally not as successful as when they are jigging. For lakers it is mostly a deeper water thing but I believe other trout come in shallow (although I haven't fished this way). I have been hoping to target other trout through the ice but haven't done it yet. In general if you were to set tip ups for lakers, go to deep water and put a minnow or sucker on a single hook using fairly light line as your leader. Set a few near the bottom, a few about 10 feet off the bottom and even some dead bait right on the bottom. If you are targeting altantic salmon then put them right under the ice to about 10 or 15 feet under the ice.

  • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    2 жыл бұрын

    You'll learn a lot about each laker and its mood by the way it chases. I always start by taking it away fast. The fast chase really triggers something in them if they're in the mood. I've had the chase from 100 feet down and bite right under the hole (very common actually). If they chase hard just keep going. You'll see some that give up half way through the chase (also very common). But keep playing with them up and down. If they' just won't close the distance to the bait then it's time to change things up and play around with them. Go back down to them and try getting them to engage again. If they're on the sonar I'm trying different things to get them to bite. I use jaw jackers around me sometimes as a dead stick with live bait. I usually set them shallower to try to find either Atlantic Salmon or lakers cruising at different depths. I get way less fish on those than jigging though. I'll get 95% of my fish while jigging. Also, I love plastics but spoons and lipless cranks work too.

We had success on one fish by jigging it in its face but marked close to 40 fish throughout the day and that was the only hookup. Some days they are just in that kinda mood. When they won't chase, especially if you are marking that many, I'll crash bottom with the bait. Bounce it up and down a few times. Sometimes they'll pick it up off the bottom. After a few bounces, start reeling it again and that can trigger a bite. We've had days where that was the only thing that would work.

    For my water, I find the most consistent laker fishing is in the morning. It doesn't always hold true but more often than not it does. I start at first light if possible and fish to 12 or 1. You usually notice the action dies off by noon with only an occasional fish showing up after that. Once in a while it is the opposite... but not as often. Also I find the better fishing to be in February in my lake.. by the time we hit mid March it dies off in our normal deep water places. I think the fish follow bait toward creeks at that point.

    I am using your technique in summer on open waters and it works. However, I can be out on the water and have like 6 fish go vertical in a morning and chase me up like 50 feet but then swim back down after meeting my line - I am reeling VERY fast like it's going vertical. Is this usually because they lose interest, or they missed? I'm using a 1oz jighead with a 4-5 inch swimbait, #20 braid with four feet of 20 lb a flourocarbon leader. I will not feel anything on the line.. do you usually feel it if they bite the tail? I do hook up fish, but the amount of fish that go vertical to the successful hookups are like 1 in 10... any ideas?

  • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    @WhiteDogTrailCompany

    To be honest I don't have experience for this in summer... the idea is the same but the conditions are pretty different. Chasing and not committing is part of the game when you're doing this technique but 1 in 10 does seem pretty low for fish that actually bite. I have a few thoughts but they are purely guessing at this point...Maybe they're hitting the thermocline and don't want to venture above it into the warmer water? Lake trout are definitely cold water fish. Maybe they don't like the lure for whatever reason... doesn't look real enough or doesn't look like the baitfish? Or maybe with 20# Fluoro I suppose it is possible they see the line? I use 10# but if your fish are bigger than ours then it might make sense.

    @@WhiteDogTrailCompany Thank you for the reply. I switched to 8# flouro and went to a 3/4 oz jig and I ended up catching the last 5 out of 6 vertical chasers. I also extended the leader length to 15 feet instead of the 3 I had on. Your videos are awesome dude, thank you so much! Our fish are average 11 lbs, but I've caught some in the high teens. The smallest fish I've ever pulled out of here is 6 lbs. Obviously with 8# I need to be very careful and setting that drag down after hookup or I'll lose the big guys, but this seems to be working now.

    @@ryanjones2576 That's awesome!!! I actually missed the part where you said how short your leader was. I bet that made a difference going to a long leader. I use a leader of about 12 feet or so but we have super clear water where we fish. I definitely think you made the right call to go more realistic with everything. If i get refused in any kind of fishing I try to go smaller and get more realistic to what the fish are chasing! So glad you had a high percentage of hookups last outing!!!

    I live in North Eastern Vermont. We catch a lot of Lakers. The lake we fish is mostly lake trout, a few brookies but that's it for game fish. There is a ton of bait fish, crawfish etc for feed. We catch alot of fish in the 16"-22" range. I've tried deep water, in close to shore along drop offs, rock piles, etc. Again we have great success both jigging and on tip ups. Typically we use live smelt on our tip ups. Suckers sometimes if we can't jig up our own smelt to use. The point of this long rant is: the biggest Laker we've caught in nearly 30 years was just shy of 7lbs. Decent, but nowhere near as big as they can get in this lake. What can I do to try and Target those bigger fish 10+pounders. We know they're in there. Every few years someone will land a monster in the 15-20lb range. Usually in the early summer w down riggers etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My uncles and I are stumped. And they've fished here for nearly 60 years. New subscriber here. Thanks in advance. And as a side note; there is very little fishing pressure. There is a trophy lake not far that gets all the attention. (Lucky for us).

    Sounds like you have a good thing going! Some lakes just have a smaller average size fish with the occasional monster. I primarily fish Lake George and the average laker is 24-26" but we get them up to 30" every once in a while. I'm working with another guide to help fill trips and we were talking this weekend. He swears he catches most of his bigger fish in shallower water believe it or not (looking for bigger bait). One of our guys this weekend caught one that was close to 30". We were fishing in 73 feet of water and a mark showed up at about 30' deep... He reeled up and got a chase and got a really nice one. I honestly usually fish deeper water but I want to make sure my clients catch a good number of fish and I don't really "target" monster fish. Maybe try setting tipups in shallower water with bigger bait and then jig deeper water nearby and look for a flag...

    Hey man don’t be knocking the slip rings you need to put a zip tie and or electrical tape over those brother… don’t just trust the plastic rings to hold the reel. If you tape em tho they will be bulletproof… I have caught over 300 steelhead in the last year on my centerpin float rod with slip rings some of the fish were nearing 20lbs anyway I’m not bashing just give them a chance lol tape em tho… i garauntee a fifteen pound fall chrome steelhead will smoke a lethargic winter laker even if it’s 40 inch lol different rods mines 13 foot long

    I know people do it but I switch my reels season to season and never wanted to bother with it. I imagine zip ties leave a sharp pointy end and tape leaves residue.. is that your experience? I never wanted to do that and just got rods where they can be easily removed. I've also seen lots of centerpin anglers doing it.
