    the last but one sentence of the video made me feel so much better. cause I have already covered the control surfaces and now going to hinge. when i started watching this vid, I was like holy sh*t, I shouldn't have covered!

    Good how too. Thanks for posting. I remember using that same method for hinging control surfaces and always dreaded it until I got a G.P. Slot Machine which made hinging a breeze! Hinge points are easy to install as well. Also, as far as hinge glue goes, I think Pacer discontinued the hinge glue but I found that is just an aliphatic based adhesive and a great and low priced substitute is Gorilla or Titebond wood glue for plastic hinges and hinge points.

    I'm just joining together my GWS E-starter air plane modell. The next step is to cut the elevator, rudder and aileron from the wings. After that I've to join these things with 'hinge', but I don't know how it looks like. I think it should be a 20mm X 10mm slight thing but there isn't anything looking like that. What do you think, is it good expedient if I cut a 20mm X 10mm paper and glue it and I use the paper as hinge. Won't the elevator, rudder and aileron break away during flying?

    I'm not really enjoying Guillows PT 17 build. What other brand would you recommend? I'd like to build a P51 or a Spitfire.

    Hi all. Since I shot this video, Zap has discontinued Hinge Glue adhesive. But fear not. An excellent replacement glue for gluing in plastic hinges is Zap's Formula 560, Canopy Glue. Actually it is the same stuff, except 560 dries clear. Still sticks to the hinges well and also swells the wood for a tight installation.

    I have discovered that Formula 560 seems to be water soluble. Please be careful when cleaning your airplane's hinge areas with any liquids! Just an FYI.

    I cut ball pins, throw away the ball end half, and hammer the pin into the hinges and wood surface. No glue required.

    Don't use a pen if you are going to cover the surface with transparent film. Use a light pencil mark instead.

    do you need to glue in the hinges? my reactor seemed pretty tight but i dropped a wing on the aeileron and it knocked it loose a little.

    If you used something heavier your plane would be a flying brick...point is you want it as light as possible. Just don't crash, but if you do, balsa is easy to repair with CA glue.

    I'm building a Nieuport 11, the article (it was a free plan with a magazine) says they used 'furry hinges' does anyone know what these are, or would strong paper or laminated plastic bag round a bit of wire do the same job?

  • @grahambate3384

    @grahambate3384

    Furry hinges is a piece of plastic with some sort furry material on top. In the old days, the old timers would make hinges from old xrays and glue in with white wood glue. Very strong and heap.

    No, definitely don't use paper. It bends and wears down easily and will tear over time. You can buy little plastic hinges at any model store, but they should be provided with your model.

    Cutting a recess for the barrel of the hinges after the airplane has been covered seems like a rather crude technique, but then again, considering that up close, most RC planes look like a pile of splinters covered with shrink-wrap anyway, I guess it's par for the course.
