How to Install Ford Edge Front Struts, 2007-2014 - Loaded Strut Assembly

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Set of 2 Front Struts, Loaded, for 2011-2015 Ford Edge / Lincoln MKX: amzn.to/305FDXD
Today I’m replacing the front strut assembly on this 2011 Ford Edge and I’m going to do it without removing the entire cowl, to save a lot of time and labor.
Unlike a double wishbone suspension, the McPherson Strut design that the Ford Edge uses only has a lower control arm. The bottom of the strut attaches to the knuckle, so when the knuckle turns to steer the wheel,
the whole strut & spring has to turn with it.
Where the strut bolts to the shock tower, it uses a separate plate at the top with a rotating bearing inside.
The bearings in that plate allow it to rotate smoothly, but wear out over time
and that’s when you hear a clunk noise when turning, usually at the same position of the steering wheel. Over time this will just get worse and clunk more.
Rather than rent a spring compressor and do all that sketchy labor to replace just the bearings, it’s a fraction of the time to just replace the entire assembly, plus the strut and spring are also both brand new now.

    Two words for you, after watching you fight that back nut: basin wrench. After you release it using a regular open wrench, that's what you want to use to rotate it all the way up, when less torque is required but you want maximum rotation angle. It also replaces the angular wrench, by the way. About $15. If you aren't messing with plumber's tools and want to keep your dignified mechanic's status, then there is a Powerbuilt 2 Piece Spring-Loaded Auto Size Adjusting Crowfoot Wrench that could work as well. About $30 bucks the set with 2 sizes, but even the smaller may be too big for the space there. Otherwise, thank you for the instructive video!

  • @6thGearGarage

    @6thGearGarage

    Ай бұрын

    Did you remove the nut on the center at the top of the strut assembly top hat? If so that means the strut is no longer held together and compressing the spring, meaning the spring force is pushing the suspension down with a lot of force. This is a very dangerous situation because the spring could cause major damage to objects or people because of the extreme pressure it has on it. I'd have a professional mechanic bring spring compressors at this point instead of attempting to go further yourself.

    @@Alexjussme When the water pump gasket fails on these engines, it will often mix coolant with oil, due to the water pump being inside of the engine, behind the timing cover. Once coolant mixes with oil, it starves the bearings of lubrication, which sends metal shavings through the entire engine. Once I saw metal shavings on the screens of the VVT sensors, I knew it wasn't worth replacing the water pump and flushing the engine, because the engine would not be reliable in the long run. It might have lasted 500 miles or 5000+ miles, but I wasn't going to go through all the labor of replacing the water pump (or pay $1200+ to have it done) to find out. Plus while the WP is replaced, you're also supposed to replace chain, tensioners & more. It was a time vs money decision to part it out.

    It takes 10 mins to remove cowl. As body shop tech it's worth the extra few mins you looking at 5 to 10 mins a nut in the back. Good video POOR ADVICE

    It's not just the cowl cover, but the piece below it as well. If you can remove the entire cowl assembly in 10 mins, then go for it.
