Thanks for posting this video. I just finished replacing the struts and shocks on my wife's 2013 Lincoln MKX. Your video helped me remove the rear panels to get at the shocks and to remove the cowling panels. Also it just helps to get educated a little before diving in to an unfamiliar repair. I got the whole job done in about 5 hours with no lift. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video Mac, you saved me a ton of money and now I know the job is done right. I had a local shop install struts about a year ago and they forgot to install the bump stops....I hit a big pot hole and BANG! Because of that I had a bear of a time removing my drivers side strut (Monroe) because it was broken, lose & leaking. So, when I removed the two bolts, the spring extended the whole unit 3+ inches and lodged itself on the front drive shaft. I had to use spring compressors while it was still in the car to reduce it's length to remove it. The passenger's side went smooth as silk. Another thing I had to do was use a scissor jack and a 27" piece of wood (and old shovel handle) butted up to the bottom spring plate to compress the strut about 3/4" to to get the bolt holes to line up. I too went with KYB struts...and I also used their top mounts, and boots & bumpers. I replaced the stock springs with H&R Sport springs and it handles so much better with the lower center of gravity. Again, great video and big thanks brother! PS: One thing I wish you gave a closer lesson on was the installation of the top mount and how to hold the shaft while putting on the top nut. I wound up using a 13/16" deep socket with a 1/4' drive 10mm socket and extender (running through the middle of the socket) to hold the shaft. . Then I put a vice grip on the socket to turn the top nut.

I know this is old but what should it cost to have the front struts replaced 2011 edge, I desperately need them done but I'm always scared to take my car to dealerships because they love to overcharge and add extra stuff

It's very easy and you make it hard then you make it story man just remove the tire on disconnect to bolt with the 10 mm then go up and remove the plastic for the windshield wipers and you all said man you don't have to make it long story

Replaced mine, now it’s banging going over bumps. How tight does the center mounting nut need to be ? All other suspension parts have been replaced It’s loud. Arrow is pointing in , see it through the hole. All bolts are tight. Bump stop was installed too so I’m baffled. It’s both sides

what do you torque the 2 large bolts on the strut to knuckles to? having a hard time find a diagram online showing the torque values.

Does anyone do this? Other than a mechanic shop? I mean replace the strut only and not the entire assembly? I just don't think many DIY folks have that spring compressor.

Do you know of any lifts or any way to lift an awd edge? Trying to build an overland edge don’t need a rock crawler lift but like 3” would be fine. Do you have any idea how I could pull this off? Thanks!

Can you comment on the ride quality before and after please? I also have a 2011 limited with around 110k on it and I'm going to be doing the struts but can't decide between the Monroe's RoadMatic strut assemblies or the KYB Strut-Plus assemblies. I'm scared a bit going with KYB's because it make make the ride seem a bit stiffer, than what the monroes might do or am I wrong? I can only find people talking about how the ride quality is most like OEM with the monroes but dont compare that to a KYB to make a decision.

I was wondering if anyone knows why a top passenger side strut bearing keeps failing? First time it was popping when turning so just had both complete strut assembly's replaced. Within about a month the top strut bearing on the passenger side failed again. Had the whole assembly replaced again under warranty. Now about another month is gone by and it's starting to pop again when turning.

You didn't show what other (if any suspension parts you removed.) You mentioned the anti-sway bar but didn't show taking off the nuts for the end links which require an allen head in the studs. Also, it says to NOT use an air/impact to tighten top nut on strut. You didn't include what tools you used to secure the shock/strut shaft while tightening the top nut to the factory recommended 85 ft lbs.

when do you decide to replace the struts? I have a 2010 with 140k miles, original struts/shocks. I'm guessing the are either shot or pretty darn close to being shot.

About 40-60K miles ago. You will notice the improvement when you change them. They are shot.

+MACTFORDEDGE that's what I thought, but driving a car every day, I mistake what is "normal" for what is actually not. any other suspension components to check on while the struts are being replaced?

Check the ball joints (should be good unless you are running canyons with your Edge) You will have to replace the strut bearing mounts. Check Sway bars links. Other than that just a good visual inspection.

Excellent video but you made a mistake when you put it back to the vehicule, because I notice when you pulled the entire assembly out the strut mount arrow is pointing to the outside on both sides and later you explain that it supposed to be to the inside, so I think you made a mistake on that part.

Not sure what you are referring to as the notch was matched to the inside which is how it is supposed to be. I have logged over 60K miles on them already and will be replacing them again this fall. I will double check for you then.

The struts only go in one way and each is built for Right or Left. They were installed correctly. I have installed many on the Edge. It might be me making an error in statement more than an error in the installation. Sorry if I misspoke

MACTFORDEDGE That's right the struts only goes in one way, but I mean the strut mount direction, maybe it doesn't matter, the way it go, but check the video at minute 12:00 to 12:30 next check video at minute 28:32 to 28:47 you will see what I'm talking about
