My dad ran over his Sears charger in the 70s. Mangled the metal housing. He continued using it for the next 20 years. Before we took away his keys, he left the headlights on with increasing frequency. I wonder if the cheap electronic charger is effective as a trickle charger for my truck which is used seasonally.

I bought one of their chargers, a small one, about thirty or so years ago -- all analog. It gave very good service for about 20 years, and when it went kaput, I decided to get another Shumacher because of the the good service. All I could find was digital, with LED lights, and micro processor controlled. So that was what I bought. The thing was a total piece of crap. That's when I discovered Associated--all American made and all analog. I will NEVER buy another Shumacher product again ever. YMMV

I've got a Schumacher battery load tester. No digital crapola, just some resistive wires that put a real load (not simulated) on the battery and a needle gauge to view the voltage drop. Had a mystery battery that digital testers said was ok. Hooked it up to the Schumacher and it fell flat on its face immediately. Software algorithms are no substitute for reality.

Check voltage, as long as its not that low, the best way to charge a typical battery is a trickle charger. It'll charge slow, like it'll take 48 hours. But its the best way to bring an older battery back to life and it not die right away.

  • @BixbyConsequence

    @BixbyConsequence

    13 күн бұрын

Trickle charging is unnecessarily slow for most of the charge cycle. Optimal charging of lead-acid batteries has 3 phases: *Bulk Charge* -- charge at the battery's acceptance rate until about 80% charged. *Absorption charge* -- steady voltage while the amperage is gradually reduced, until about 90% charged *Float charge* - voltage begins to taper until it reaches the battery's natural voltage level. At this point it reaches the "trickle charge" state, which can be maintained indefinitely. If a battery is in such bad condition that it can't withstand the 3-phase charge it's not worth bothering with. People fart around with epsom salts and "desulphation" gadgetry but it's almost always a waste of time.

I bought a Sears rolling battery charger/starter in the early 80s to start my CJ7s. Still use it today and I paid the outrageous price of $65 back then. It has one rocker switch between start and charge and two volt meters….and that’s it. Best purchase ever made hands down. Of course I only drive old school Jeeps and single cab trucks so I’ll probably will it to another who does the same.

By design some chargers do not charge below a set voltage, assuming battery is damaged and may expand/leak if charge attempted. The work around is a quick surface charge from another battery, then charger will take over from there.

Or buy a battery charger that has a bypass feature or is designed to charge very low voltage batteries. The big problem is making sure of the batteries voltage. A 12V battery with a bad cell can outgas hydrogen if it's charged like a 12V fully functional battery. So, the electronics will charge it as a 6v. The second, third or fourth time, it might charge properly. There's also a crossover between 6V and 12V as well as 12V and 24V where the charger cannot distinguish one from the other. So, in software, rules are made based on how fast the voltage increases during charge. Your quick work around can possible cause problems if the battery you're trying to charge is really a bad battery. A spare battery probably costs more than getting a good charger, plus you need to maintain it.

Jay Leno really likes the CTEK chargers. Just be aware that if you choose the option to "recondition" an old battery, it will pulse 16Volts into the system. While every company says there is no need to unhook or remove the battery from the vehicle, you need to make sure every item in it can handle 16volts.

Great advice! Check your owner’s manual for recharging instructions! One of my cars requires disconnecting the negative ground to recharge. I also blew diodes on another car’s alternator when I just hooked up the + and - terminals to recharge. A check with a voltmeter showed it ( Schumacher) was peaking out at 16.4 Volts! Now I remove batteries to recharge and jump with a recharged 12V battery to be safe! I still use a resistor type battery checker. This might require resetting computer…good luck to all, what works for me might not work for you!

@@Vmaxfodder Yep, the 16V pulse is not steady, just momentary and enough to break up the sulfides on the plates inside. It just needs that extra voltage to break them away. The fear is very sensitive electronics in the car may not be able to handle even a momentary 16V.

All the transformer based Schumacher chargers will discharge a battery if reverse connected. There is a bimetal safety breaker on the output clamps, when it heats up from too much current, it will open. When it cools down, it will close. The UL test on this is 7 continuous hours minimum using a very large fully charged new battery, >100Ah.

The Lead-Acid replacement Lithium batteries use LiFePO4, so they can handle more abuse than the Lithium Ion types. They are rated 3.2VDC per cell nominal and charge up to 3.7VDC. These lithium battery types have battery management circuits inside the plastic housing. Internally the batteries are usually smaller than the housing and the battery package is lighter than lead-acid types. Lithium has a higher energy density compared to lead-acid. The management circuit will monitor the charge and discharge of the LiFePO4 batteries, so they are not over or under charged. It also monitors the temperature of the cells and will shut down if the temperature goes too high. A 12VDC battery will have 4 LiFePO4 cells connected in series inside the battery housing to get the battery voltage (12.8VDC). Internally, they will also be connected in parallel to reach the desired capacity. So, they are Series-Paralleled connected internally. So, it doesn't matter what voltage the alternator puts out, it won't harm the lithium battery.

I used to design battery chargers, mostly for AGM batteries in mobility scooters and wheelchairs. We had dozens of charging regimes supplied by the battery makers, defining absorption stage voltage, time to linger before dropping to float voltage, float voltage etc. They wete always tweaking the battery chemistry and re-issuing a revised charge regime. If we supplied a charger we had to program for the exact battery it would be used with. Auto chargers are simpler because it's not cyclic use. With a cheap charger I wouldn't leave it on charge without checking the voltage with a meter. A cheap charger can allow the battery voltage to rise excessively to where it starts out-gassing.

The reason the specific charger is that lithium charging curves are different from lead-acid. Lead-acid voltage starts low and increases as it comes up to capacity. Lithium will go to 12.8V immediately and just stay there. So, a lead-acid battery charger will think the lithium battery is bad and stop charging. Either a charger with a special lithium charge function or a separate lithium battery charger are required. The alternator is fine, since it is just a voltage source and not really a charger. When the engine is running, it just outputs a voltage to whatever battery you have attached and won't stop until you turn off the engine.

The SMPS charger will allow a better charge, it has very low ripple current. A linear (transformer based) charger works off 60Hz (NA) and after rectification is 120Hz ripple. Many use SCRs to control the output current, so at lower currents the higher the ripple current. Basically, you have AC riding on the DC. The AC heats up the battery, doesn't charge it but does cause it to charge less (because of heating) and sulfate easier. So, yes, a Linear design will last longer, it isn't without it's problems. Also, an SMPS has a transformer too, just a lot smaller due to the high frequency, a lot easier to manufacture and a lot cheaper to make. The weak part of SMPS is the rail electrolytic caps. A good design will give you a good 10 years. A cheap design might get you 3 years, but some only year (like Home Depot CFL bulbs, super cheap and the caps burned out).

Different chemistry batteries require different charging routines. Constant current, constant voltage, charge levels, charge hold, cell balancing etc. Manufacturers publish charts for the recommended charging process and simple battery chargers rarely meet the required spec and can DAMAGE your battery. The more expensive chargers have computer-controlled charging circuitry that allows you to select the type being used. Ordinary car alternators are made for lead-acid charging only and will damage any other type of chemistry. You CAN charge a lithium using a car alternator but don't expect it to survive!

The lithium batteries replacing the lead-acid have a battery management circuitry built in. The alternator will work fine, because it is just a voltage source. A charger with electronics, probably a micro, may have problems because the battery doesn't charge like a lead-acid battery. A lead-acid battery is considered dead at 10.2V (FLA) or 10.5V (SLA). The voltage will increase on a lead-acid while charging and go to 16V (FLA), 15.4V (AGM [SLA]) or 14.8V (GEL [SLA]). A lithium battery, on the other hand, will jump right up to about 12.8V and stay there. The dI/dt is much longer for a lead acid battery than it is for a lithium battery, which is like a blip. So, a lead-acid battery charger might think the battery is sulfated and stop charging. A lithium feature or a separate lithium charger will have electronics designed for this.

OK, yes batteries need special charging depending upon the technology for the cells within them. Saying that cars recharge their batteries with the on board alternator based system. They are set for the standard lead/acid batteries. They have zero intelligence, just put out the 13.8 to 14 Vdc to recharge the battery. So, your Li battery (and gel) has to tolerate that type of charging system. As to external chargers, all they should be required to do is exactly what the car's normal system will do.

Yes, this can happen when a battery is deep discharged, such as below 8 volts. The charger will usually put out a small current to monitor battery voltage. If a battery is sulfated, the voltage will jump up. However, a good battery will take a long time to go up in voltage, so the electronics are programmed to play it safe and charge as a 6V battery. Let it charge for a little while then stop the charge, unplug the charger or disconnect a clamp for 10 second then reconnect, and try charging again. It might require a few cycles, but it will recover eventually.

My go-to is a Century Model 141-272-000 transformer based charger with 100 amp boost which I bought back in 1994. It never fails unless a battery is truly hopeless.
