How to fix vertical lines on iMac

Ғылым және технология

The models of 2006 iMAC's have this problem. They are not the only ones, though.
I tried to find a fix for that on KZread but never could find. Many people had different theories but not many offered a solution. Someone suggested to bind the edge of the screen to see if there is loosen contacts. It does not work in this case.
The only fix for this problem is a display replacement.
If you going to look for display make sure you looking for correct model.
My MAC model is 5.1 and based on 2.16Ghz Intel CPU and compatible display type for it is: LM 171W02 (TL)(B2)
I've seen at one of forums, that someone found out that the (TL)(B1) is compatible also.
If you going to try another type of display, the OS X may not boot. Apple is not a PC and does not have a BIOS, stuffed with variety of controllers.
Anyway, if these lines appear from moment of power on, it would be a display fault, not a logic board or Video Card, not a capacitors (nevertheless you should to replace bad ones). If you buy refurbished one you have a chance on successful replacement, otherwise if some one just pulled his own display and sells it through e-bay, you may bump at the same problem in a while.
PS
The LM 171W02 (TL)(B2) is not in the compatibility list of UniMac V4. So this kind of adapter, looks like, will not solve the problem.

Just wanted to let you know, the LM 171W02 (TL)(B2) is the normal stock screen for the iMac. The UniMac V4 is used to replace this screen with a more common type of screen such as LP171WU1 (TL)(A2). That is the reason that LM 171W02 (TL)(B2) is not in the compatibility list. Sorry for the confusion. - Adam RealMacMods

Hello once again SergSpace! I once conversed with you before. I used your other video for replacing my Logicboard on my IMac Intel 17" 2.0 GHz computer, and your informative video was absolutely a great contributor to letting me do so! But, I initially just replaced the thermal compound on CPU, Graphics Card, and Nosebridge chip(not sure what that one is actually called) on original Logicboard other than placing on the brand new, unused one. It actually worked fine for 3 days. Then, the light flickers on the screen began to appear for a few hours like it had did before on the display and the same thing happened...a pixelated screen reappeared. So I went ahead and put the brand new one I had purchased still in original packaging and all, and even still had the brand new smell to it. I took computer apart again, and was still getting the same results. A pixelated display. I figured since my com had been sitting unplugged and unused for just under a year, that was the only reason it worked for those few days, 'cause it had been rested. I made a video, and wanted to see if you can give me your thoughts on if you might happen to think it might be my screen which needs to be replaced. And please believe me when I say, "I will not hold you at any fault if your information does not pan out for me!" You seem like a man with great integrity, whose heart is set on helping others with their IMac problems in which Apple seems to keep the info to them selves! And even just for your help with the other video of the Motherboard, if we lived in the same town, I would have been honored to buy you beer or 2, or a meal on me, for helping me save hundreds of dollars on not taking it to a technician. If you can please respond back to me as soon as you can, it would be much appreciated! Thank you very much sir! Link to my IMac problem - IMac Intel 17": kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJaGqMuzdLLZXZc.html

+El Steve-O Radio™ El Steve, if it worked fine for 3 days and then you got a flicker (black and on screen) it means that your thermal compound is not right or you did not put enough amount of that. I used "Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound" from amazon.com ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002EQU6C?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage ) It worked fine on both PC AMD Video Card and MAC video card. I had the same problems with a "flicker". Try that one. It seams that not all thermal pastes work the same way. Leave you comment if it made a difference. BTW. Make sure that all your vent fans are on. And one more thing, try to connect your MAC to external monitor. If results are the same it will only lead to Graphic Card or its overheating to say it precisely. It is less likely that it was a virus.

My pleasure! If you'll buy LCD with inverter attached, do not hurry to throw away your old one. Regardless the fact, that I bought not defective LCD, the inverter, which came along, started to fail in couple months, and I had a little screen flickering. So, I used my old inverter from replaced LCD, which was still good and now I have as good as new stable picture monitor. If your inverter will have the same problem, try this or you may find the same model on e-bay. It's not expensive. Good luck!

Yes, you can connect iMAC to another monitor with Mini DVI Male to VGA Female adapter(or DVI to DVI). You won't have any vertical lines then, because it's an iMAC screen issue. Any iMAC video adapter issue won't appear as vertical lines. Video adapter problems will appear as random color dots(chunks) on screen. If your screen is blank and plugged in external monitor shows normal picture, then if changing video adapter setting won't help you need to replace inverter, which is in this video also..

  • @SergSpace

2 more suggestions: 1st if your MAC has a shared RAM with video card, you may try to replace each RAM module (on the bottom of screen for iMac) with another compatible RAM (by type and speed) Try and see if it was the reason. 2nd check power board and motherboard radial capacitors' heads. They must be straight flat and clean, with no electrolyte on it. This also could be the reason of cooling fan stop and as a result - overheating CPU or GPU. But If ext. monitor will work, then it's yours LCD.

Am I understanding you correctly? You want to use your old LCD from powermac like G5 with iMac 2006? This is not going to work. To replace your LCD you ought to follow the steps in this video, find a model number on the back of LCD, then find this LCD on e-bay. If you have a spare monitor (not a computer which looks like monitor) I see no problem to connect it via Mini DVI to VGA Adapter (if your monitor has VGA) or by other cable adapter which is applied for your monitor input as a temporarily solution.

Your are welcome! )) If you have iMAC with clutches on the top as in this video - this is the problem why it feels loose. If you did not break, accidentally, this latches or plastic where they snap on, you just need to re-seat them again. Did you get what I meant? - Two metal hooks with springs on top inside of white frame (front cover) which you put over the LCD. It's possible, that they were bended too close to the top of frame. Unscrew bottom screws of the frame again, bend this hooks away from top of the frame for about 5mm, then put your frame back on. Press firmly top of frame toward back cover. You should hear clicks (on left and right sides). I've made the same mistake at the first time. Also, you should do this because your CD slot may not match with your frame slot and you may have troubles with loading or ejecting your CD disk. Good luck

TV set may have a bit a different solution. You may try search on KZread how to fix it. Try to press at the frame at the ends of this line. It could be a flex cable. It may not help. of course. Open back cover and try put plastic card between frame and flex. It may help you problem go away for a while. The problem could be in electric board responsible for color also. I'm not much a TV guy. - about 9 months. But as I said, it all depends on a condition of screen, that you buy, actually not LCD itself, but permanently attached electrical circuit with microchip, which controls LCD signals feed. Failing of this chip, gives these vertical lines. You can't replace it, unless you have special soldering machine. Anyway, the cost might exceed a replacement of whole screen and you might not have 100% of successful contact connections in case of chip replacement.

  • @SergSpace

Try to connect it to external monitor. If you still have the same picture. There are 4 suggestions: your Video card driver needs to be upgraded your last installed application in conflict with video card driver you might have unsupported screen resolution your video card memory is malfunctioning. First 3 fixable in Safe boot (press and hold Shift key immediately after your Mac starts up) The last one fixable but at cost of Motherboard replacement, because Video card usually is built in in MAC's.

I'm not quiet sure what's the battery were you referring to. LCD has no battery. It comes sometimes with inverter which lights up fluorescent lamp of LCD. Assuming that we are talking about inverter, you can take it from your old LCD if it did not come with new one and connect it to your replacement LCD. Part number of LCD inverter usually marked on inverter board. If you were talking about capacitors which have a resemblance with battery then yes, I have to buy those, they cost about 3 or 4 dollars or so .It depends on capacity and voltage. At 6:54 of this video you may see where to look for the nominal capacity and voltage. Every capacitor has its own numbers. This type of capacitors called are RADIAL Electrolytic capacitors. They have a polarity. Don't mess up "plus" and "minus". Minus is marked with white stripe and usually shorter (if you buying a new one).

You say "new". If it's still on any warranty you can use it to fix for free or return it if it's possible. Anyway it looks like your LCD screen is defective and needs to be replaced. It's could be not as new as advertised. If you ask why line shows up after certain time, well defective semiconductor does not keep up within nominal characteristics at certain temperature point, which inevitably will go up after couple minutes or in your case - 20.

The same way - by replacing LCD screen. If your macbook is not "Air" then it should be easier. You have to check if there are hidden screws in front of the bezel (frame), usually 4 in total in corners, pull bezel by peeling from inner side. LCD will be exposed. Check where it is connected with the lid by screws and unscrew them. Check model number on the back of LCD and find the same one on e-bay or so. Well, anyway, they sell also "Adapter Kit with Full HD LCD" for 17" MAC, I hope it will fit, because they did not mention what models of MAC this kit for.

The only help is either follow this video or find a repair shop. But they'll charge you as much as twice more than you could spend by replacing your LCD by yourself. Just follow this video.

I got G5 imac in 2006 great machine. But is time for me to retired it. Issues i had was the Bluetooth not compatible with new phones (actually it never worked for me). The safari web browser won't show you accurate colors (this is fixed by using chrome or fire fox). Also Apple only really upgrades your itunes now a days (2014). Good machine for every day and light use. oh and lines started to appeared on me in 2012 and it just got worst and worst. I heard of this issue years after i had bought my computer. and then BAM! it happened to me.

This video is meant for everyone who wants to keep their unit and can't afford a new one. Apple wants money, that's why they keep releasing new OSX which are not compatible with older MAC models. Not accurate colors are not really an issue. G5 is way older model. I picked one next to trash can (somebody thrown it away). I figured I might keep it as a back up computer. I was not able to install even Ubuntu on it. So, yes if you don't need it, do not invest money.

Jann Goldberg I don't know what to tell you. Cost of LCD for your G5 perhaps as same as G5 itself nowadays. G5 is too old model. At the same time G5 on e-bay has about the same price as Intel based iMAC (2004-2006) around $160-180 or so I saw it. So in your case it's easier to replace your G5 with iMAC 2.16GHz (or so) based on Intel Core Duo. Check e-bay. But if you have no such amount of money, you can buy cable adapter from to connect your MAC to PC Monitor or to your TV if it has VGA input.
