How to Fix Knee Valgus (KNEES THAT CAVE IN!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have knees that cave in (a condition known as knee valgus) then you are going to want to watch this video. Whether your knock knees are present only during the bottom portion of a squat or are there all the time, you are going to want to fix them since leaving them alone is going to eventually wreak havoc on your body.

The condition known as knee valgus refers to the inward pointing of the knees. This creates stress on the inside of the knee joint in the form of tensile gapping of the medial collateral ligament, and compression forces and stress on the outside of the joint. Because of the altered position of the knee joint, your movement is affected and the repercussions are often felt higher or lower in the body; namely in the ankles, hips or back.
It is important to understand that the knee joint itself is a consequential joint. That means, that it is simply a hinge joint that is at the mercy of what is going on at the ankle below and the hip above. If the mobility or strength of the ankle is altered then the knee is going to be affected by the impact these changes have on the tibia (the lower half of the knee joint). If the hips are too tight or lacking the strength required to stabilize the femur (the upper half of the knee joint) then you are going to have problems at the knee as well.
In this video, I show you how to ascertain whether you have issues in the ankle that you want to address. As you will see, the ankle is also affected by what happens at the foot. When you have flat feet or over pronated feet, the joints above are dramatically affected. It is important to understand the causes and the effects of flat feet in order to be able to intervene and do something about it so the normal knee motion and mechanics can be restored.
Most of the time, flat feet will cause the ankle to cave inward and this drags the tibia along with it. The stress is immediately transmitted up to the knees in the form of a valgus. The peroneal muscles on the outside of the lower leg get adaptively shortened and tight from being in this position too long. They are not the cause of the pronation however. Their tightness is simply the result of the pronation so you want to make sure you strengthen these muscles as well.
The muscles of the ankle that act as a stirrup that supports the joint are the peroneals and the posterior tibialis muscle. Both of these can be strengthened with the exercises for your ankle shown here with just a single band. Of course, you will want to stretch the peroneals as well and address the soft tissue changes that have caused tightness as shown with the two drills in the video.
As for the hip, weakness of the external rotators and abductors is almost always the cause of troubles at the knee. Why is this? Because no matter how many squats we do, we are simply not addressing the rotation at the hip without paying attention to some of the smaller exercises that often get overlooked. This is critical. Here I show you an exercise to strengthen both the abductors of the hip without any equipment and an exercise for your hip rotators that requires just a band.
Either of these can be done just a few times a week and you will see a dramatic improvement in the condition of your knee valgus. When you combine the drills for both the ankle and the hip together, watch as your knee positioning corrects itself and you start moving better than you ever have before. Your strength should improve as well since your body will finally be operating out of its desired alignment.

Unfortunately for me years of childhood obesity have permanently affected the bone structure of my legs, leaving me with permanently deformed knock knees despite losing 100 lbs. Being told by multiple specialists and physical therapists that my condition couldn't be fixed from anything outside of surgery sucked, a lot. I thought it would prevent me from marching in a drum corps, which had always been a dream of mine. Despite this, I did as many exercises as possible to help me with this issue, and I eventually did end up marching, something I thought would be impossible for me :)

Similar situation here since I was young up until 17ish I was pushing close to 300 pounds, My highest weight was around 292, from old pictures I can see how badly I had knocked knees, right now I'm at about 180 and it's gotten better but it's still fairly noticeable, luckily hasn't stopped me from running and weight lighting but I have constant knee pain where it can just ache if it's too cold out sometimes

My dad has dislocated both shoulders multiple times and doctors wanted to do surgery, obviously not going to spend money on a 60 year old injury when all we need is pain relief. Before he couldn't even raise it above his ear but after lots of massages and light weights he can reach all the way above his head without pain.

Common sense to me, but surprising how often people give themselves more of what they don't need. If you got too much of 1 thing, do the opposite - counteract it. Rant over. He didn't say anything about the foot, but two of the exercises you mentioned are the same ones he has me doing.

This video is a god send, I've had years of knee pain, two rounds of knee surgery for a maltracking knee cap and I've been given orthotics to fix my overpronation but this is the first time I've actually understood what's going on with my legs. I've recently started running and my hips are suffering as a result so I'm hoping this will fix my issue!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a lot of posture issues and learned a lot about them in your video's. One of my issues is having flat feet. I have supportive soles for my shoes but didn't know any exercises to help it get better. Again, thanks for the tips and exercises!

Holy Toledo! This video just changed my life. My flat feet have plagued me by causing foot pain, but I had no clue they were causing my knock knees (which I’ve been trying not to hate for as long as I’ve noticed them)! You are about to make me look and walk so much less like a dork. Not to mention, this is probably why I have totally unexplained knee pain. Seriously - thank you SO much!

I've been dealing with this for a year now. I went from playing 3 sports over 4 hours a day for a year to not being able to walk painlessly. I've visited at least five physiotherapists, two doctors, and done countless hours of research myself. I think I've found the issue. I cannot wait to do these exercises. I will come back here in two weeks and report my progress. Thank you so much Jeff and AthleanX.

I've been running since last year, and had a tibialis posterior injury.... never recovered from that. I thought it was purely overtraining, but probably wasn't the only thing - but even though I had some consultations, I was never told what was going on. I notice my right knee was pointing inwards, told my PT, he said nothing about that. A couple of weeks ago, my right arch was hurting and felt like collapsing (both are naturally low but the other one is OK). I researched a lot and found this video really helpful and insightful to help correct my knee rotation and all the problems it causes, along with other video that help my feet muscles... thank you so much!!

In my young years, I had severe valgus, corrected by special soles. It reduced the valgus, but I kept it my whole life. Now, at 57, I have strong arthritis on my both knees. No doctor or physiotherapist ever told me about specific exercises that could correct the problem. I’ll have to face surgery in the coming years, with protheses as replacement. Better advices in the past could certainly have avoided this finality…..
