After months of thinking I had a vestibular condition which was by having cataract surgeries in December 2016 and January 2017. Nobody asked me prior to surgery if I'd ever had an inner ear infection which I discovered while researching my vertigo in May of this year was important to ask. On March 9th of 2017, I flew to Da Nang, Vietnam where I lived for almost two years. I was still recovering from the surgery and it was taking my eyes quite a while to adjust. Shortly after arriving, we went to a four-story mall and took the elevator to the top floor to the food court for dinner. As we stepped out of the elevator, I began to get dizzy and it felt like my knees were going to give way. I had to hang on to my companion to walk across the large expanse shiny white floor with bright lights above, loud music playing, and people rushing by. It was embarrassing, and I felt totally out of control of my body. Then over time, the issue became less and I was able to go to the mall on my own, but held onto walls and railings as I still felt uneasy. Years before, in about 1980, I had the worst inner ear infection anyone at the clinic in Boise, ID had ever seen. The onset was waking up at 4 am to use the bathroom with the room spinning like a five-martini binge, yet I hadn't had even a drop of alcohol in my system. The local doctor was befuddled as I had absolutely no equilibrium and would have dropped to the floor if he hadn't been prepared to catch me when he asked me to close my eyes. I was referred to experts who gave me Antivert and the strongest antihistamine on the market at the time. About a month later, I was finally able to walk unassisted and not look like I was drunk when I did. After returning to the States at the end of January 2019, I didn't notice the problem, though I hardly went anywhere with shiny white floors and bright lights. Then, this past May of 2023, I flew from Portland, Oregon to San Diego, California to spend five days/nights with a friend in Encinitas. After checking my bag at the Alaska counter, I started walking to the terminal gate which seemed to be at least a mile away. Suddenly it hit me, white shiny floor, bright lights, and people rushing by. I was dragging a carry-on and carrying a rather large bag. My knees went weak, I felt disoriented and had to cling to the wall as I was walking like a drunk. By the time I got to San Diego, I was exhausted, frustrated, and committed to getting wheelchair assistance for my return flight...which I did. I vowed to never embarrass and stress myself like that again. I cannot even begin to express my relief having made that decision, though I can walk just fine at home or in familiar territory with no white or light shiny floors. Then, the opportunity came up for me to live in a spiritual community for almost six months in Ajijic, Mexico. I had little time to think about it, as I needed to act on it right away. I decided to go and got my plane tickets complete with wheelchair assistance in Portland, Los Angeles, and Guadalajara. Prior to leaving Oregon, I went to the bank to pick up the pesos I'd ordered. Lo and behold, white shiny floors and nobody to hold me up. I ambled across the floor hoping nobody would take me for a drunk. I've been here in Ajijic for almost two months and my vertigo getting worse again as my vision takes time to adjust as I have to look down so as not to trip on cobblestones or uneven or slanted sidewalks, or not step in dog poop. Finally, I told a group of friends about my frustrating condition that has kept me from enjoying life here and doing activities that are no longer comfortable. One of the women told me she'd had vertigo and went to a chiropractor here who did the Epley maneuver, but that it was possible to do it myself. She said I might give it a try and see if it would work. Well, guess what? It did. After years of discomfort and embarrassment, a five-minute procedure has set me free. I used this video and I'm finally feeling like myself again. WHEW! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hi 12 years ago I got out of bed to go to work and immediately collapsed to the ground, I was diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis and I had to attend a balance clinic, I rarely but the odd occasion have to do the epley manoeuvre on myself, it does work. I have acne in my ear canals so I don’t lose the wax in my ears like you normally would as the skin particles mix with the wax, I’m essentially making my own form of concrete and every couple of years have my ears syringed. I treat my acne with 1% steroid cream, recently after having my ears syringed I started getting giddy and light headed, I worked out myself why this was it was the steroid cream because usually when I apply the cream I have wax in my ears but this time there was no wax and the cream had gone further down into my ear canals, I stopped applying the cream and the dizziness disappeared after 24 hours. I thought I would tell you this as it could be another reason why one of your patients get dizziness. Hope this helps someone out there.

I think this may have not only helped my vertigo, but a long-standing clog in my ear after weeks of feeling like there was a cotton ball stuck in there. I tried everything to clear it up - blowing my nose while pinching nostrils, saline mists, steam, different "maneuvers" on KZread... many different techniques. I did this on my bed and while the clogged feeling and dizziness didn't clear up right away, I felt something "open up" in my clogged ear while at the gym 20 minutes later and it felt 95% better. I'm going to keep doing this helpful technique and will report back with success.

This video was a lifesaver for me today. I had my first vertigo outburst a week ago (didn't even know exactly what it is). The next one this morning. I did the suggested test and performed the Epley on both sides. After doing it 7x on my left side, 3x times on my right and 2x severe vomiting the "miracle occured". :) Just want to mention thinking back, there were signs of vertigo for a while, like blocking sensation in my ears, little discomfort now and then, but major discomfort many times while using the air pods, which II use almost everyday while commuting (until now that is). My suspicion is that's what caused or triggered vertigo in my case. THANK YOU SO MUCH Dr.Jon Saunders

I am really happy you commented and mentioned the AirPods! I developed dizziness awhile ago and started to have actual spinning - vertigo. I suspected maybe my constant apple ear bud wear was the cause?? I’ll never know. I stopped using them and then started them again and started getting vertigo skins again .. I have stopped and switched back to one ear basic cheap headphones. How is your vertigo now? Have you had it anymore since the comment a year ago??

Dr John, Thank You sir !!!! I couldn’t believe I found this video and the symptom description matched mine exactly. I first felt it getting out of bed quickly and I almost fell over. From there the worry began and a lot of sleepless nights and a bit of fear. Low and behold, the test was strongly positive. I did the procedure twice bag firmly in hand and some serious grunting to get through it. No vomit but pretty spinny is an understatement. Worth every bit. Next day I was prepared for more reps….. nothing! Gone ! I attribute mine to some very intense workouts and tons of golfing almost every day for months. I am very grateful and I wish you good Khama sir. I am sooo grateful 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The doctor must check your ears first what type of vertigo you have maybe you have a syndrome on mernier dissease, watch out. Another case its if you have anxious, panic or fear then you have a vertigo and dizzyness. My doctor consult me some tranquilizers like Xanax because i have a vertigo, i have syndrome of mernier and also i have neck pain. They help me a little, its killing the symptoms from the vertigo but its not final treatment to take drugs. Try to take Vomex, or Antivom for a while to see how its going, those medicines i mentioned its for vertigo but you dont take it for a long time, after your vertigo has been healed up cut the medicines. I hope the best for you

Thank you so much for this video. I experienced this for the first time this morning when I got out of bed. So weird!! I sat up quickly because I realized i had overslept. I didn’t open my eyes until I was in an upright position. The first thing I saw was the ceiling fan spinning. But my eyes followed the blades uncontrollably. All this in a matter of seconds. I stood up and quickly sat back down, feeling nauseous. I closed my eyes to make it stop but when I opened them back up they were still in motion. Not knowing what was happening I stood up, walked towards the bathroom and nearly fell over. I held on to the walls until I sat down on the toilet. Still spinning, but I put my head down, closed my eyes, and it eventually stopped. All in all about a couple of minutes. I do have an inner ear issue, also neck issues as well as ankylosing spondylitis. But, this has never happened to me before. Can it be a one time thing? I will mention it to my doctors. I don’t want to go through that ever again!!!

My question is by being patient, do I really have to continue doing it because when my head is 45 degrees on the right at lying position, when the spinning dizziness starts it seems intolerable so I turn to left to and dizzines is relieved. If I try endure the dizzines until I vomit, are you sure dizziness will dissipate? Or maybe worsens and why?

I can almost always draw a line from the onset of BPPV symptoms to a period of dehydration or higher salt intake. Posterior canal is the usual culprit, so Epley maneuver usually fixes it, but I have to take Bonine (meclizine HCl 10 mg) or similar about 40 mins before doing them to avoid barfing.

Hi. I wish you were here in New Jersey. You have a very calming voice. So, at the age of 29 (I am now 64) I was diagnosed with BPPV. I had a major vertigo attack. At the time I was pregnant and there was nothing that really could be done. As soon as I delivered the baby, the vertigo stopped. Then, one year later, it came back and since then I am fine for a couple of years, then I get an attack - but lately, the attacks are different . The first time, there was spinning, dry heaves, had to crawl to the bathroom. Now, I start getting this 'strange' feeling which then causes anxiety. I immediately have to go to the bathroom, and then I break out in a sweat and feel very week. One time I passed out. They last about 2-1/2 hours and then I am ok. The past few weeks, tho, I have had about 4 "mini' attacks and I am so anxious and fearful that it will continue. I went to my ENT who did the Dix Hallpike maneuver and said because i did not have nystagmus, that he couldn't do the Epley maneuver because it wouldn't help. I am at a loss. Help!!!! Susan

I found out one of the reasons for my vertigo was because my jaw was out of alignment. When opening mouth and hearing a clicking noise and putting fingers at base of jaw feeling that jaw bone out of alignment is the sign. In talking with jaw PT specialist, she taught me how to get the jaw back in alignment. Also, ENT said to stop yawning big and instead train myself to yawn with mouth barely opened. After dentist visits I always have to put my jaw back in alignment and somehow this whole jaw out of alignment contributes to the ear problem that contributes to vertigo. Also, ENT told me to actually put myself into vertigo daily and then don't fight it; just let it work itself out. It was a matter of training the brain. After about a month of this my vertigo became less and less. I get vertigo a couple of times a year now and when I do I always check to see if my jaw is out of alignment and if so, I do the quick exercise to help get it back in alignment then I don't fight the vertigo. When I do have vertigo now, I only have it for seconds vs days or a month as before. Interestingly, in my ortho surgeon office, when I told the radiologist as I was laying down now to help me but let me do it so I didn't get vertigo, he shared his experience with me. He had vertigo for years and then also did same thing...put himself in vertigo everyday and unfortunately a side effect can be throwing up, but then don't fight it. He was also told this trained the brain and his vertigo is also virtually gone. But, he said his took longer to get rid of than mine. I did this maneuver but it didn't solve my problem but will for some. Just sharing my experience.

Dr Saunders, thank you for the information. My Aunt has been going through this problem for a couple of years and she has seen many doctors, and each and everyone of them told her they had no idea what the problem is, so there is no real diagnosis! What should she do and how does she know what the problem is before she does this exercise !Thank you for your answer.
