How to find a wonderful idea | OK Go
Музыка
Where does OK Go come up with ideas like dancing in zero gravity, performing in ultra slow motion or constructing a warehouse-sized Rube Goldberg machine for their music videos? In between live performances of "This Too Shall Pass" and "The One Moment," lead singer and director Damian Kulash takes us inside the band's creative process, showing us how to look for wonder and surprise.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). 7:16 "It doesn't feel like you thought of that puzzle piece; it feels like you found it." 7:28 "We're usually looking for this specific feeling, which is WONDER. And there's always a component of SURPRISE to wonder. So we're not just looking for good ideas; we're looking for ideas that surprises us in some way." 9:18 "The chance of getting all 130 things to not fail at the same time, is .9 (for 90%) to the 130th power. So calculate that out and you get .000001 (...) so your chance for success is literally one in a million." 11:10 "So what we do is we try to identify some place where there might just be a ton of those untried ideas. We try to find a sandbox and then we gamble a whole bunch of our resources on getting in that sandbox and playing." 12:05 "This may seem to you like testing, but it really isn't because at this point we don't yet know what our idea is. (...) We're just playing."

Indeed - how they did their talk is how they do the videos: this one step more than necessary for purely functional reasons. So instead of showing the videos, they play the soundtrack live in front of an audience, which is the most classic one-take one can imagine.

The most underrated band ever
okay, I am 53 and was diagnosed with ADHD, finally, at age 51. Better late than never, right? Suddenly my whole life made a whole lot more sense. What he describes about playing visual games is totally what I've done my whole life. I'm always noticing things and playing visual games. I'm an artist so I really relate to this whole presentation!
@JoshuaTootell
Жыл бұрын
I have always been the same way. Never diagnosed, I just don't care. But I also completely lack creativity, so I missed that boat.
One other thing that impresses me is that they're capable of playing each other's instruments. I had enough difficulty learning the piano.
Beyond creative that i feel like crying for real. They are so passionate about arts and visuals!!! Wow! INFINITE RESPECT FOR THESE GUYS AND PEOPLE INVOLVED
The One Moment video is just mind-bogglingly amazing to watch!! I love hearing about their creative process. And as someone already commented, seeing Damian's bedroom as a teenager, it all makes so much sense that his brain works in beautiful, crazy, creative ways! If he wasn't doing what he *is* doing, he might be an evil genius (think Gru from 'Despicable Me') bent on world domination! LOL!
For me their music and videos are something gorgeous, something that inspire me so much I just want to do really great things immediately. There is no only about beautiful picture of the video but deep sense of every song. Just thank you, guys, I hope someday I will make my ideas come real!

i wish my degree had just been watching this video, it literally tells you how to design in a much more accurate and productive way than the methods we were taught. and is way closer to the way i create solutions and fix problems. the idea is never planned in a lovely strict process rather stumbled upon and discovered... ive never thought of it this way before but it really does sum up how ive always gone about designing anything. always been a fan of the band and this ted talk confirms why i'll continue to be
Love this, they show me how to un-conform again. I've worked in corporate America for 12 years and feel the creativity slowly sucked out of me. My bedroom was so similar to his! What's more, even greater amounts of visual oddities covering every wall, oh and lots of glow-in-dark puff paints on the ceiling as well 😂😂 Thank you for keeping the cogs inspired!!!
That save at 16:40 though. I thought that he'd mess up for sure after mixing up the 2nd and 3rd line of the chorus but he played it off well with a little laugh.
