    This never gets old to me. Ever. I need this reinforcement regularly in an environment that constantly bombards me with images, social pressures, or the very presence of foods that don't bring me optimum health. It's literally a constant battle and effort to keep yourself on track, so thank you for these videos.

    Me too...bad 'food' is truly, quite literally, a drug..we need to be teaching our children this stuff, instead we get them hooked the minute they are weaned, and so good health becomes a life long battle to escape addiction, the pleasure trap...I find it helpful to say to myself, 'this is isn't me, it's the drug'...no good expecting myself to think straight in the grip of addiction...SO hard!

    I would love to head Doc's opinion of elevated bf, even after weight loss for former obese individuals even after a switch to an adlibatum whole foods, lower reward, lower calorie dense diet? Btw, I love listening to Doctor. He is soo relaxed.

  • @pida9669
    @pida96693 жыл бұрын

    Dr. Lisle said that the more calorie-dense a food is, the more the organism enjoys it. However, I think there is missing some nuance here. The most calorie-dense food of all is refined vegetable oil (roughly 4000 calories/pound), which is cheap and widely available, yet we don’t go around drinking the stuff. Why? Because it doesn’t taste particularly good on its own. As another example, my kids hate unsalted cheese but will wolf down regular (salted) cheese, which has the exact same calorie density. Based on reading lots of nutrition labels and experimenting with many foods, I find the factors that most influence pleasant taste are (1) sugar and other sweeteners, (2) sodium, (3) glutamates or MSG, and (4) the lack of bitterness, sourness, and other off-flavours. The presence of starchy carbs, fats, and smoke flavour also contribute to pleasant taste but at a much milder degree than the previous factors.

  • @Itsunclegabby

    I would argue that we (they) do go around drinking the stuff (oil). It's mostly hidden in the sponge of carbohydrate and flesh. Cakes get blames for being carbs but they are mostly fat - butter, cream, egg. People are making "bulletproof coffe" with butter in it. I see people put more calories in oil on their salad than they have greens on their plates. It makes my head spin.

    @@Itsunclegabby Good point. The argument I was making was that if caloric density alone determines the foods we seek the most, then we should all be walking around chugging 1L bottles of refined vegetable oil because it has the highest caloric density of all foods. But we don't do this, because plain oil on its own doesn't taste that great. I agree though that oil is added to many other foods. But again, my argument is that the things that make food most desirable is not actually the fat on its own, but primarily the added salt, sweeteners, and MSG. These significantly amplify the pleasure we get from fat--compare for instance the taste of frozen whipped cream (i.e. no salt or sweeteners) to your average store-bought ice cream, or the taste of unsalted cheese to regular (i.e. highly salted) cheese. This is why most people prefer to use prepackaged salad dressings (which contain lots of these additives) over plain extra virgin olive oil on their salads. Or they might use plain olive oil, but then add cheese (which is almost always salted), croutons (salted), bacon bits (salted), or salt itself. I don't see a lot of people just eating plain greens with only plain oil on them, though there are some that do. Cheers and have a good one!

    Dear Chef AJ, I'm not sure if you0ll read this but I would really really like an answer! I'm a bit confused. When Dr. Lisle says it doesn't make much difference whether you go to KFC or cook for your family at home, what exactly is he comparing? He made similar statements in BYG Podcast. Is he comparing eating fried chicken at home or in KFC? Or comparing the effect of fodd on health&well being in general? How much of an effect does eating McDougall diet or your SOFAS free diet have on a (let's say) generally healthy&fit person? Thank you so so much!
