My trick to easily cut a Rubbermaid side, so you can use it as a cat box. This will stop it from shattering as you cut.

After running around all day and breaking a wood burning kit I watched this video and it took me 5 minutes to cut my box after that. Videos like this save lives.

Yes! I’m not using it for a litter box, but I need to cut holes in the sides or tops of storage bins and I always painstakingly would use my wood burner to melt out the hole!

Also you can use a pool noodle around the edges. That’s what I did with mine and the ones the dollar store are the best because they sell them year-round even in cold climates states and there’s a smaller ones which snug better.

Wonderful video! Thank you! I'm making a hedgehog feeding box, and not one of the how-to videos comes anywhere near this. And we don't all have the sophisticated equipment commonly used in these videos. I have used my hair dryer and made a perfect square hole in less than 5 minutes.

I've never seen anyone else do this! I thought of it years ago when my male cat would stand up to pee in the box and I was constantly cleaning the WALLS. (gross!) I needed a tall litter box and the one I bought had a seam running around the middle which allowed the urine to leak out. Double gross! So I came up with this idea and it completely solved my problem. Wish I had had your vid to show me how to do it properly - I destroyed three bins before getting one to work!

In your title you mentioned Rubbermaid, but said Sterilite in the video. I tried using the Sterilite shallow containers 4" to 6' deep, IIRC.. Total fail. They would crack after the first 3-5 cleanings. (No, I did not cut them or hit them). I concluded it was likely something in the cat urine that caused the plastic to become brittle. (Chemical reaction between the ammonia and the composition of the cheap plastic, I think ? I am not a chemist.) I have the same breakage problems with their other containers too. I suspect it's the chemical composition of the plastic. They also seem to fail if they freeze and are dropped. They then have shattered on me. A nail file can smooth the edges of the plastic too. Rubbermaid is IMHO, a vastly superior product, even if it's more expensive.

I have used the sterilite for years as litter boxes. I’ve been lucky that they have been holding up. After about a year, I do make new ones, they seem to hold a stinky smell once they get too scratched. I choose these since they are clear. Having visibility can help in multi cat houses with not having urine behavior issues.
