I've read that many cats are afraid of enclosed litter boxes; box with a hood, or a box they can't see their surroundings. They become anxious and won't use it. I'm going to make mine out of a clear plastic bin. Thank you for the idea

My cat actually would not use the litter pan I had but as soon as I got a box he started using it all cats are different

People claim to use those covered cave-like litter boxes to give “the cat” privacy. Lol. Cat doesn’t care; people often just don’t want to see it, lol. Those are so much work to clean - forget about it. I soap & water the boxes each time I change the litter out, which is, well, constant. But what this guy is doing seems like a good idea to me, really.

My cat doesn’t kick the litter out but they scare each other when they leave the litter box so they get litter everywhere 😂😂

Good solution for cutting, we use the plane ticket at my home for so many things. It's so convenient for more than just hijacking a plane! LOL! So easy to change the blades for the ones we have. Thanks for a great video!

If you heat the blade it'll go through easier

...besides, you also might use a small cupsaw to start the window's corners already rounded and just sanding them to make them more bland before taping it. Great idea ! Tks 4 sharing !

i did something a bit like this. i to was having the same problems of my bbg making a HUGE mess with her litter and some times missing the box. even AFTER i bought a bigger box for her. i did pretty much the same thing lol. but got the opening TOO big and wrong xD. and what i done was make sure her litter box would FIT in the tub container ITSELF and i put a pad down. one of those easy simple pads ppl use for there beds and everything. and i folded it put it down and put it in the box and put her litter box in the tub itself. and it really helps either way. and to TRY and keep the tracking down some, dont really work so i may get a new tub and try again, i placed to pads down and placed an old folded up bed top sheet down and it KIND of helps some with the tracking little bit. but not much. but i think maybe next month ill try and do something different since ill have a bit of extra money and try it this way. could be really easier in the end for me and not so much litter all over the carpet of my room. but i subscribed to you channel ^^

Awesome idea. I love my cats but hate the kitty litter flying everywhere when they use it.

Excited to try this. Have a cat that thinks he is a dog at the beach kicking sand. thick layer of litter on all sides of the floor but litter dust covering every dang thing in the room.

I suggest putting the old box inside the new box (and sealing the entrance gap between the two w duct tape). This type of plastic container does not have a smooth bottom surface, making scooping a hassle.

That’s a good idea but if the cat peed over the side, which a lot of cats do, you’ve got a lot more work to clean it up. 😭

21 cm, 8 inches seems high for an entrance. Also, how much litter are you using? You only need 2 to 4 inches. The larger the container the more you will need for this depth. Container bottom and walls should be smooth for scooping. Have you tried wood pelleys and a shifting litter box?

If you hit hair dryer on area ahead of time it helps cut the plastic. Thanks for helping people. 8-) I use in some tubs, wall paper trays, which are easy to dump into garbage bags. I use wood pellets for litter....buy it by bulk with pallet discount.

You can also have entry points on both sides and / or the top lid. Our warehouse clubs sell aluminum pans, 50 cents apiece i bulk to utilize inside, I sometimes use two or three so they are easier to dump...

If you use a clear container either totally open or with a cover with a very large top-hole, it's even more efficient as far as solving your problem. Just be sure to use a clear container so kitty doesn't feel claustrophobic going potty. Also, never use more than 3 inches of litter at a time. Obviously, you can't put it under a table this way, but it makes for more clean around the box. Side cuts, even if a couple inches higher from the floor will result in more out-going litter onto the surrounding area. Most importantly, always have one MORE box than you have cats. One kitty needs two boxes. Why? Because Cats often prefer to pee and poo in two separate places. Two kitties require three boxes and so on.

Use a dremmel to cut and sand the plastic.

To save money you might try using less litter in the box & see how you like it. 2.5”-3” deep works out as plenty at any one time (for us).That scoopable litter is expensive! I know people think it’s cleaner. At our rescue we use non-clumping clay litter and just clean out and completely change out more often. For us, it’s cleaner, more manageable & waaaay cheaper. We rescue & often can have 8 or 9 cats at a time. We might use scoopable if it’s donated.

Use pine pellets from tractor supply store. Cheaper and works better.

This video is like 6 years old, but I guess if you’re watching this… I have a cat that will urinate over the sides, but I realized that she only does it when the box is closer to the wall. If I move it away from the wall 10” or so she won’t do it. It’s like she feels there is a side to the box with The wall to close and just stands straight up and pees on the baseboard. Anyways, try just scooting your box out a bit, also makes it easier to sweep around all the sides and notice any messes.

Using a hairdryer to warm the plastic helped.

You can use a dremel with a drill bit to cut totes cleanly and easily. That's the only way I have ever been able to cut nice rounded edges. And it does need to be a drill bit. The other cutting tips melt the plastic.

So I actually heated a large cutting knife on the stove and it cut right thru the plastic with ease!! Then I smoothed the edges as well while the knife was hot

Heat gun and a box cutter (carpet knife) works perfectly. Zero strain

Why not just buy the boda litter box it’s about $20 something and my cat loves it and no kick off

You know...if you heated up the side a little, the plastic will cut a lot better. Just use a hair dryer for a few minutes, so that it's soft enough to cut.

I'm just annoyed by the litter because I have a carpet and it's hard to clean it.

Heat gun to soften the plastic before cutting will make a world of difference. 😊

I would have just left the litter box inside the box, would have been a more easy clean up.

So I think maybe a clear tub and lid would be less claustrophobic. I mean I can’t know for SURE what my cats think but I know how claustrophobic I feel in an outhouse...🤔anyway I’d put some plants or something around it that way it would be like they could see you but to you they’re a little camouflaged? I’m getting off track here sorry. So moving on, what do you think bout using one of those self installation little cat flaps for the cat to come in and go out through a closed door? Maybe it would REALLY help to keep the disaster contained? Maybe add a vent in the lid with some sort of charcoal filter? Just an idea. TOTALLY going to try your idea with my modifications though so 🙏!!

Cats don't care. Why do you think cats give birth to their kittens in closed up and dark places...for the privacy and so that no one disturbs them. Also, when a cat dies, if they can they WILL leave and go find a place dark and secluded. Cats don't get "claustrophobic"

EXCEPT - the cat can kick litter back out the door!

is it a bad idea to put the litter box in a room where I hang my outdoor jackets/coats and shoes? Will the smell transfer to my clothes?

Depends on the litter you use. Get a dust-free kind first of all. Second, if your cat doesn't mind, get the kind that traps odors. I use Special Kitty lightweight clumping dust-free litter in the 7.5 lb plastic jug. Works great.

I have a feeling he’s using so much litter so he (thinks) he won’t have to clean the litter box that often. Lol. Guess O understand that. Lol. I’m with you on that. But you know, he is giving a needy cat a nice home. Good karma on that for sure.

Mike or Jimmy the clear box is better

There are issues with most storage containers so try and find one that is smooth inside and doesn't have a bunch of dips and hard to reach creases in it. My reasoning for searching is because my male cat's butt slowly lifts up as he pees so he literally ends up peeing on the side of the litter box. Most litter boxes, even those with lids have places where the pee can leak out. Trying to find one that doesn't and so far,... no such luck. My one cat is a munchkin so top entry is not even an option.

My cat does that too. I was today years old when I learned it's called "elevator butt" and can be a result of the cat having to strain to urinate, having arthritis in their legs/feet, or if they are declawed (yikes), it's a pain response. If you suspect any health issues with your fur baby and they are doing the elevator butt, it might be worth a vet checkup. Mine is geriatric and in very early stages of kidney failure, so I think that's why he does it. :(

Pine pellets is a good idea but if u don’t clean the poop after they go chances are they will step on it and get it all over the house. I woke up one morning with poop marks on my furniture and the floor so I went back to clay litter.

I really think u put a lot of litter In the tray that's yr cat kicking more and more try to put half of that and see any improvement..

Yoy are also using too much litter. Only need enough to cover thw bottom with half an inch or a small amount more

Depends on the cat. Mine won't use a box with anything less than 2 inches of litter. Vets have even been quoted saying that at least 2 inches of litter in the box is healthier for them. But you do you, as the rest of us will do the same 👍

Really nice video, but terrible box. When yoir cats pee on the sides, it's hell trying to clean it out of those corners. The scooper is too big to rrach the corners....it's a HUGE mess.

Great tape lining the entryway! A bit of an issue with your chosen workspace though - you could've dumped the used litter into the other box anywhere, but you chose to do it *right next* to [possibly the only place] where your pet/s eat? I sure do hope you immediately washed those dishes (which still had food in them) and their food area thoroughly after recording your last segment :/

Yeah, I upgraded from this even to a giant clear plastic container 32" long x 18" wide x 15" high. It takes 3 plastic containers of litter to fill it to 2-3" deep. My cat Storm loves it because he can kick and paw and has plenty of room to do his business. As suggested in various posts use heat on the plastic to make it easier to cut the entrance for your cat.

That litter depth is WAY more than three inches and that’s your problem. It’s way too deep.

Are you really using that much litter? Wayyyy to much!
