If you are using this as a shelter for an outdoor cat, please replace the bed with “straw.” Straw is the ONLY bedding material that will repel moisture and water. Just be sure to use straw and never hay. Some people think that hay & straw are the same but they are not. It will also last for several years and help keep them nice and warm. NEVER use hay, blankets, newspapers, cat beds, etc. because none of these materials repel moisture. Once they get full of moisture or rain from a wet cat if will freeze when the temperature drops and a cat can’t stay warm this way.

I used to place a store-bought cat bed like that in my outdoor cat shelters as well, until I learned that using anything made of fabric like that can draw moisture, and actually cause the poor kitty to get even colder! Straw is what you want to use, and lots of it.

Today is a horrible day, I saw a poor dead kitten at the streets around boxes earlier, it was raining a lot last night which is probably the reason it went near there for shelter, it.... probably suffocated to death by a box falling to it... there was a lot of other stuff so it looked hard to break free.. I don't want this to happen ever again... thank you so much for giving me this idea. It could be a good source of shelter in rainy days too. Thank you a million times, thank you...

You must line the inside with some sort of styrofoam or padding to keep it warm all around. The plastic alone will not deflect the cold. It gets down in the twenty's here in Oregon. That would be a frozen plastic box. I love the cat bed inside though but it must be taken out and washed frequently. The kitty's have wet feet. Good job caring for them though. Not enough people do.

You are correct. We live in Fl so it is good for here. But prior we lived in PA, which we would gather the Omaha steak boxes and use those as the insulation. I should have put that information in there for colder places.

Straw is the best..no bedding needed. Sit it up high on bricks. Add a brick on top to keep it from blowing over.

Great tip!

Please tape around rough edges where cuts were made to avoid cats from getting cut, I use waterproof duck tape till the jagged edges are smooth thank u

I have problems with raccoons an possums eating the food I leave out for the cats sometimes. Will they get inside of these too?

I would say they would. They love little cubby hiding places.

If you live in the north / Midwest don't use a cat bed it will freeze then the cat might freeze to death use straw/foam other then that great video

Correct. I should have mentioned that in the video. We live in Florida so it was about the rain.

My cat's freezing inside, because gas are taking all money and cannot afford to warm house... Maybe 1 of these would keep her warm at night?

Awe I’m sorry to hear that. Bless you both. Yes, it’s inexpensive and will give her some warmth. We actually have one inside and our cats love it. You can also use one of those cheap styrofoam coolers or ask friends if they have any from Omaha steaks. We used the. In Pa for outside rescues.

That is what’s recommended. Personally if it is out of the weather and warm weather try different things to get something they like. I’m from PA where in the cold weather straw is the best. But we live in Florida now so cold isn’t the issue it’s just keeping them dry. 😻

This is not the way to do it. An outdoor cat shelter should have an insulated Styrofoam cooler inside of the plastic tote, wrapped in a mylar blanket, and straw should be used as bedding. The edges of the hole should be lined with duct tape, to prevent the cat from hurting itseldy when entering or exisitng the shelter. This shelter you've created would provide zero warmth for an outside cat during cold weather.

Many people have commented this. As I’ve stated we live in Florida and we are protecting from rain, sun and wind. This should have been stated in the video…but was not. It has done perfect for our weather with no issues. As you stated yes, that is the proper way for colder weather which I made plenty of with Omaha steak boxes in rescues over 25 years.
