How to drop oil pan on 98-03 saab 9-3 and 9-5

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is my how-to video on how to remove the sump/oil pan from these specific saabs. If you've found this video, you probably understand why cleaning out the sump and pickup tube strainer are important for the long operation of your saab 9-3 and 9-5.
In this video I used the same oil I took out because it was only 200 miles old. This was a mistake, as I now still have the oil pressure light after warming up.
IF YOU ARE STILL EXPIERENCING LOW OIL PRESSURE, READ ON.
Perform a liqui-moli engine flush to clean out all other nasty particles.
Then, run 5W 40 or thicker oil.
This is necessary if you do not wish to replace the oil pump.

    ATTENTION SAAB OWNERS IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PERFORMED THIS FIX, AND STILL HAVE OIL PRESSURE PROBLEMS, READ ON. In my description I talk of making another video. This never happened, as I never recorded it. But! If you still have issues, research a product called liqui-moli engine flush. Run that in your motor for 15 minutes, drain oil, and run 5W-40 motor oil OR THICKER. Without replacing the oil pump, this is the only way to get adequate oil pressure. AVOID CASTROL. USE Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella. That, will fix your issue. But, if you haven't done what I do in this video, do that first.

    after watching so many videos and reading forums about how to do this, I really didn't want to do it lol. bit for me I took the front 2 sub frame bolts out. loosened the middle left and rear left bolts, and managed to wiggle it out. found so many shards of rod bearings though. thanks for the video. was very helpful!

    Thanks for sharing this video! It was very helpful! I got a low oil pressure warning light on my 2002 Saab 9-3 SE (165k miles - I bought the car at 66k miles, 10 years old) and all discussions on the Saab forums pointed to this issue. The pickup had some debris in it and there was sludge in the bottom of the pan, but it cleaned up nicely! I took it around town and the warning light hasn't come back on, so hopefully that fixed it.

    THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! You helped my BF, his dad and me so much by putting this out , we followed your guidance for the beginning of the video. We were able to use a pry bar to wedge our pan out, maybe not the best method but it worked and no damage was done! Our screen was really plugged! 1999 Saab 9-3 2.0 liter with turbo

    Christina Gray I'm glad you were able to make use of it! I knew how hard it was for me to find a visual representation of what to do, so thats why i made the video :) glad you were able to revive your saab :) Question though, as i thought all the 1999's were T5 motors, did you have a viggen, aero, or SE? I think those are the ones that have the T7 motors. I was under the impression T5's didn't have the sludge issue like the T7's

I think that will be my next job. Thanks again.

    Oil pans - absolute nightmare on Saabs but nothing like as bad as putting them back without messing up a liquid gasket bead. Probably a no-no but I ended up grinding off about 3-4 mm along about 4cm where it was catching. Could not face an oil leak after going through the replacement process!

    I was having suspicions that I may need to do this job on my SAAB, but I was wondering if it was at all common for there to be gas and brake response problems accompanying the oil light flickering, since that's what has happened to mine and I figured it was some kind of clog in the pump.

    Do not forget to clean the oil trap in the valve cover. I had a clean oil pan but suddenly 1 liter of oil on 50km! Triggered by oil sludge closed oil trap on the valve train side. Only the timing chain side was still open as well as the outlet to the throttle valve, and then the oil was sucked in and burned with.

    Your oil pan is not that bad at all compared to other Saabs that I've done looks really good actually however next Time you ingage in this process you should try using the eye loop on the top of engine the by using a cherry picker you can lift up the ingine then removing the two front motor mounts then raising the ingine as high as it goes then the oil pan will come out very nicely

    I have saab 95 2003 aero and my mechanic dropped sump today for oil change and to clean the gauze in oil pan. There was small pieces of copper cam bearing stuck to gauze. The oil light never came on but gauze was dirty like yours. The engine seems super smooth but who know how long it will last and only 95000 miles on the clock. Good video did u ever see cars last with pieces of copper stuck to gauze or should I sell on at lower price.?

    Metal in the pan is never good. If it’s truly the cam bearings, there is potential to replace the bearings.. but that’s not exactly an easy job. If the wear is from the crankshaft and rod bearings, that’s not good and a significantly more expensive repair. The good news is you’ve caught it before a catastrophic failure. You are at liberty to decide whether to fix it, sell it, etc. a 2003 is likely not going to hold enough monetary value to warrant the fix if done by a mechanic. If you did it yourself, it might be worth the effort. I would caution against selling it in that condition without a ton of disclaimers about the engines condition. It’s hard to say, it could fail tomorrow or it could fail I 100,000 miles from now. Hope that is helpful

    Damien Nichols I've never heard of doing it that way, but perhaps that works too! I'm not sure what that entails but I know the suspension in my '99 was very difficult to deal with. I replaced the wheel bearing on mine. And when I say 'suspension' I mean everything associated like the sway bar link broke, and the axle nut was hopelessly stuck. I had to get a machine shop to take a monster sized impact to my axle nut. All associated slip fit joints meant for pivoting were very difficult to get off as well even with the correct tools. I can't imagine if someone tried to take it off without any special tools. But it worked for you, so that's good!

    i know all about it I have a 2001 saab 9-3 s.e that I have completly rebuilt and she is sea foam green and i just bought a new charcoal greay 2001 9-3 s.e that im getting ready to restore after i go threw the entire front end suspension and the engine. but anny way you can also jack up the engine by way of the transmission just so as to undo the two front motor mounts and loosen the back engine mount, then by raising the engine 3 1/2 inches that will then allow you to safely pull the oil pan done it a thousand times and it also works. thanks for your reply

I recently blew a head gasket and all but sending oil in for analysis at Blackstone labs Really Really gives you a good idea of the health of your engine. • @Rob-yp4rg
    @Rob-yp4rg7 жыл бұрын

    the flickering oil pressure light is due to a faulty sending unit. This is a common problem for these cars because the sending unit is cramped in between the starter and block and tends to become damaged over time from heat. Been through it all. I thought of every possible cause for this problem, but in the end, it was just the sending unit.

    If my car had enough engine oil, and then the oil pressure light came on, which then shut the car off, and it had some smoke coming out of the engine oil hole, would you say its a sending unit problem or a oil pressure sensor problem?

  • @brownbrve

    @brownbrve

    6 жыл бұрын

    False. The flickering light was because at idle the pressure was in between 5-7 psi which will trigger the light. If it's is just on the edge you can get the flicker. Or if it is on at idle and gone when driving, same thing. In this case it was not the sending unit / sensor. I used a sandwich adapter on the oil filter to verify the problem. In this case the sensor was doing its job properly.
