Saab Alarm Siren Rebuild, Battery Replacement (Fix Random Alarms) - Trionic Seven

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Full guide for rebuilding the Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5 Alarm Siren with battery replacement. This is the fix for the "Service Theft Alarm" or "Theft Protection Failure" warnings, and also stops random alarms from occurring.
This is part 2, check out part 1 here: • Random Saab 9-5 Alarm ...
Part 3 is here: • Alarm System Retrofit,...
Parts needed: Two Sanyo CR17335 Lithium Batteries. Do not use CR17335SE batteries, they will not work.
I purchased batteries from eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/322468835797
CR123A batteries can also work, but you will need to attach the solder tabs.
You need three electrolytic capacitors:
C1: 16 V, 10µF
C2: 10 V, 220µF
C4: 25 V, 330µF
While higher voltages work, make sure the capacitors don't become too big. You need everything to fit in the siren housing.
You also need conformal coating. I used PRF 202 spray, but there are many options.

Very interesting video. As an engineer on the product, I would like to correct some inaccuracies: The siren wasdesigned to be IP4x splash-proof, but SAAB installed it in a 'waterfall' under the wheel-arch, so the screwed assembly was abandoned in favour of glued assembly when water ingress became a problem and it proved impossible to seal in other ways. The much-maligned non-rechargeable Lithium cells were the only technology available at the time which would operate correctly at -30'C, as specified by SAAB and most other OE vehicle manufacturers. The solder used was 60/40 SnPb, not lead-free, so cracked joints should not be a problem. The PCB was wave-soldered, but the Lithium cells had to be hand-soldered because the solder wave would have short-circuited them. The conformal coating used in the factory was Sterling 009-0051 with a fluorescent dye to aid inspection under UV light. (Now seems to have been renamed Elmotherm 009-0051.) The red jumper was termed the 'circuit activation link' and was used to prevent draining the batteries during testing and storage of the PCB and prevented nuisance sounding in the factory until just prior to insertion into the case. If anyone is interested, I do still have several NOS units, both of the type with screws and the non-screw variant that have never been glued......

Hey Steve. This is great information! I'm currently rebuilding my alarm box -- but was wondering if you knew the screw size used to seal the box. The bolts on the unit I found were quite rusty, and I don't want to re-use the same bolts to re-install. Lastly, if a new unit is being installed in a car, does it need to be paired with a Tech 2?

Great videos m8 very informative . My 9 5 is a very early model , one of the first 25 off the line in 1997 . I have had problems with the alarm going off , but not for the reason you give lol. Someone in the street who visits has a Vauxhall Astra 2002 , when he arms the car alarm mine kicks off lol , then when he goes he disarms the car , mine kicks off again lol. We've stood by the cars & tested it . There was another time we went shopping & parked up by a shop with flats over it , the car alarm kicked off a few times , so i was walking back to the car when a woman walked out of the door to the flats with a remote in her hand either an alarm or a doorbell and everytime she pushed the button off went my alarm lol we stood there laughing about it for a bit then I moved the car lol & it stopped . Luckily the guy who had the Astra scrapped it & got a newer one & the problem has ceased , so i aint touching my alarm box , :-)

Wow, one of the first 25 cars? Must have been riddled with the early problems. I can think of the failing ECU electronics, early DI cassette problems and so on. Did you have many issues? Maybe your car alarm was of an early type that picked up electronic interference from the Astra? I've never heard about this issue before :D

Thank you very much! I ordered batteries from "Elfa", faster shipping than from china. But the batteries I ordered there was not the "Sanyo", it was another Japanese brand. I have now also repaired my alarm system (i hope)... Because the previous owner (my dad) programmed the alarm system out of the car with the Tech2 I now need to reprogram it back in. This I will do when I get a hold on my brothers Tech2. Can't wait to see if this fix actually worked :D Love your content, please make more!

when unsoldering it is always best to add new solder and then suck off the solder, this makes the old solder more fluid and able to be removed from the board.

Thanks, well done and very clear - camera pics/ focus excellent - UK I used Sidmaster.co.uk based in Glos. - quick and very thorough - I am getting occasional fault reporting on the SID, but Damon [Sidmaster] tells me that other alarm components need checking and if I set the alarm to 'doors only', I have not had an alarm go off - so I am waiting for that section!!!!! + going to ask my SAAB mechanic. What I like with your presentation is the understanding I glean - keep it up! Ross

  • @TrionicSeven

Thanks, Ross! Yes, in hindsight I should have mentioned that there also can be sensors that are at fault. This is checked with the tech2 instrument, you can view the "latest alarm list" and it will tell you why there was an alarm. Important: if the siren is at fault, the nuisance alarms don't show up in the list! That is how you eliminate faulty sensors. Thanks for sharing your experience with sidmaster! :)

My SAAB is hard wired into an external case (Which i found out following this video) and consists of a Red and Black Cable being soldered to the + and - terminals of the battery part of the circuit board and 2 x AA batteries being installed in the engine bay. Is this normal as it seems much easier to change the batteries using that method, than cutting the case open every time?

  • @NickHarman
    @NickHarman Жыл бұрын

Very interesting but I wonder if it would be simpler just to remove my unit permanently? Car alarms mostly just annoy one's neighbours and no police ever come, so they seem of very limited deterrent use. A large and visible steering wheel lock would be more effective

Hey sir awesome channel. I’m new hear attempting to learn a little about Saab. I’m currently looking at a 2003 vector that was having issue. The owner said that it runs good just has issues with the alarm. He stated that he changed the battery and when he started it, it ran for about ten minutes then died. He has to wait about another ten to attempt to restart only to get the same results. .. really like the car and was looking for something different.. just don’t want to fail with purchase monetarily. Sir will the alarm causes these issues or some other gremlin. Thanks for your time and glad I found your tube site👍🏽

Very bad idea (don't know how you would fit them in anyway. Everything must be very firmly mounted in a car because of the high shock and vibration) The charge would drain from the new battery into the old and you would be back to square 1! (A lot of the charge would be wasted as well.)

Can I use the wire that connects to the alarm in a test harness. I've just opened/rebuilt my alarm unit following your instructions and the SID message has gone! My thoughts regarding the connecting wire, is get one from a scrap yard and wire it to a battery to confirm the refurbishment has worked instead of taking off the wheel etc to find it hasn't worked. Just not sure of the voltages involved so would need some sort of transformer between the battery and the wire that connects to the alarm unit. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi buddy. Thanks for a great videos on YT! As I had the issue with alarm notification on a dash board since I've bought my latest SAAB I had finally decided to fix it. Mine alarm case doesn't come with screw, I had to cut it, but that's fine. I have only the question about the batteries - mine are still having 2.87V and 2.90V - is it already too low or are they still ok to cope with system ? They are old, 2005, I was surprised to see that voltage on them! Thanks Mikolaj

It's tricky business measuring battery voltage. You need to measure voltage under load which isn't always that easy. I'd definitely replace batteries when taking the siren apart

Hi there. I have a question: with the alarm out of the car, is there a way to test it ? Not by using the car's connector, but for example putting small voltage on the connector pins. The reason is that the batteries still produce 3V and few amps, so I'm not sure they need to be replaced.

Excellent question. No, unfortunately I don't think there is. But if you have a car with removed siren, check my retrofit video on how to connect it to the car without removing the wheel :)

My new battery measures 3.12V. The old one measures 3.06V. I read somewhere that the voltage is very critical. [In smoke detectors with a 9V battery it is similar. There is a LED that flashes very briefly every minute or so. That loads the battery. When batteries are discharged the internal resistance increases, so on no load you still get nearly the full voltage (on a meter) but put a load on it and the voltage drops.] Maybe the Saab processor does briefly put a load on occasionally and that's what makes it sound the alarm.

You stated that the older alarm sirens can be unscrewed but you did not state up to what year. I ask because I have to do this to my and my wife's car, both are 9-5's, 2000 aero wagon and 2001 aero sedan.

Good question. As the sirens aren't made to be rebuilt, there is no official information available. I would guess that it's around 2000 or 2001. I know that the 2002 is a sealed unit for sure.

Trionic Seven so what would a dealership do, faced with a sensor-okay result through Tech2? Simply procure and replace the entire siren unit for $$$ ? As you point out, there's nothing there to be replaced. As regards the sealed (non-screw down) units, a careful Dremmel attack should the trick - no tougher than careful soldering with an equally steady hand, and re-seal with 2-component epoxy.

My regular mechanics are about to work on this for me. One problem we've had is that I can't find the exact capacitors you listed. Is it important to match the micro-Farad reading or can that be a different value so long as the voltage is large enough to handle the load? For example, for the C1, the closest I can find is a 16v, 14uF, or a 50 v, 10uF. For the C2, the closest I can find is 25v, 220uF. Would these work? Thanks for your efforts and thanks in advance for any guidance you can give on this question.

Capacitance must match, but voltage rating can be higher. Voltage means the voltage it can survive. Be sure to buy quality caps!

My 9-5 from time to time will say "Key Not Accepted" even after having replaced the batteries in the remote. My car is a 2000. Remote locks still work as well. I use the workaround where you press any button on the remote while cranking the car and it works. But is there a solution to properly fix the issue?

It should synchronize after starting for the first time (possibly with the button method), but I think it should be fine then. I would try pressing the buttons 10-20 times and see if it works better.

That's a very good question. Are you really sure that you have no siren? I've read that some markets lack a siren but I'm not sure how that works. There is a possibility that you have a faulty sensor somewhere. You'll need the tech2 instrument to read off the "Last Alarm List", i.e. the reasons why the alarm went off. I think it saves the last 10 events.
