Hallo psv1600. Thank you for this video. When I bought my 2001 Saab 9-3 convertible, I was unable to do this job myself due to an injury. But because of this video, I was able to explain to my mechanic how to do it. He is not a Saab specialist, but a good mechanic. And your instructions were extremely helpful. He did an excellent job. When we could not find a replacement strainer, he cleaned the old one with a solvent, but there was still alot of hard residue on it. I spent 2 hours picking out these hard bits with a sewing needle until it was clean again. The procedure was a great success and the engine has been running beautifully since then. MERCI !!! @@psv1600 UPDATE -- I forgot to mention that a Saab specialist recommended replacing the crankshaft bearings at the same time. Good idea. Might help someone out there. Merci encore1

Nicely done... your approach is very helpful because u include tricks you have learned. Like the cheater pipe on the ratchet... and eventually a long pipe will kill a ratchet.. better to use breaker bar.. but I’m sure u know that. The pacing and thoroughness might seem over kill but I believe it’s helpful for novices to realize a successful repair also includes diligence and perseverance. Other those steps are eliminated... but mechanics includes a certain technique...double checking is so much quicker then repeating a task. I imagine all car fixers eventually learn that... Your video reminds me of how the skilled mechanic teaches a apprentice! Hopefully u will show this to your son! So he can do it next time! Hahahaha!

Thank you so much for this video! It's so detailed and you do a great job explaining everything. I just bought a 2001 9-3 Viggen convertible with 135,000 miles, and I'm thinking of doing this when I do the first oil change. I'm also going to change the spark plugs and the DIC at the same time. I guess I should plan on taking a whole day to spend with my "new" car if I do all of this. :-)

Thanks to you and hope it's help! You bought a real collector, congrats! Don't delay to clean the sump oil it's really important at this mileage. Honestly yes, 1 day would be good to to that job but don't do it if you need the car the day after, it could be stressful. Take your time, it's the best way to learn and feel secure and confortable . Hi Kari, have you done the repair on your car and what came out of it. I have the same car and preparing to change the balance chain, the timing chain and the oil pan. so any tip you may have would be most welcome

Thanks for sharing this video! It was very helpful! I got a low oil pressure warning light on my 2002 Saab 9-3 SE (165k miles - I bought the car at 66k miles, 10 years old) and all discussions on the Saab forums pointed to this issue. The pickup had some debris in it and there was sludge in the bottom of the pan, but it cleaned up nicely! I took it around town and the warning light hasn't come back on, so hopefully that fixed it.

Yup! I drove it for 7 years with no issue (and with oil changes every 5k miles). The light came on for the first time just a couple weeks ago. I knew I had a problem when I checked the oil and the dipstick read that the level was fine, so I immediately stopped driving it and learned how to fix it. Hope it did the trick!

Can I use a scissor jack to leverage the transmission?

Yes you can but use a piece of wood or strong rubber between the jack and transmission. Assure also that the floor will be flat

Petite question si l'on remplace le joint de son carter (collé avec de la pâte à joint) par un joint en caoutchouc (conçu pour le carter) faut-il placer une très fine couche de pâte à joint entre le joint en caoutchouc et le carter (idem entre le joint en caoutchouc et le moteur) ? En tout cas merci pour la vidéo :)

Bonjour, d’une partie je ne suis pas sur que tu puisse le trouver et le cas échéant ça va être galère à poser, il va bouger en plaçant le carter. Donc la pâte reste la solution la plus simple et sûre.

Je ferai un retour d'expérience :) J'ai une C3 phase 1 de 2002 (moteur essence 1.1l) et la référence du joint que j'ai commandé est Elring 984.451. J'ai aussi du commander un joint pour l’échappement car il doit être démonté en partie (et la RTA spécifie de remplacer le joint). Je suis de Belgique (à 1000km de Monpelier :p) donc assez loin je dirais. Tu auras un retour dans 1 mois environ car je dois attendre les pièces (je n''ai qu'une légère fuite d'huile) rien d'urgent mais je préfères m'en occuper).

en debut de video vous enlevez la plaque couvrant le flywheel, cette piece manque sur ma 2002 9-3 SE, connaissez vous le numero de cette piece? merci

Hi there, from where do you have the oil leak? from the switch? If you're a first timer better to not stress and start that work in the beginning of the weekend, but usually it's take about 5 hours by working queitly and carefully. Thanks for watching

Hi Tap, check the head cover gasket, mostly the link come from there on our saabs. If you change it it's easy but put grease on the cover to "glue" the new gasket while you put back the cover. Cheers

Fixed it over the weekend... Great... Did the rear seal and the valve cover gasket.. Drives Great.... Plastic Dip next..

Salut, apparement afin d'éviter ces soucis de crépine il faut fôrer des trous de 4 à 5 mm au niveau de la crépine et cela stoppera les problèmes engendrés par le cambouis.

Bonsoir, je ne suis pas certain que ce soit une bonne idée! 5mm c’est énorme et si vous regardez les résidus potentiels dans le carter ils ne font jamais cette taille mais moins. Un nettoyage tout les 200000 soit environ 10 ans ne doit pas être un bien gros problème non ?

certains conseillent de faire des trous en effet, plutôt que de forer, je penserait plutôt à élargir les mailles avec un pointeau ou une pointe à tracer, quelque chose du genre sinon, je l'ai carrément enlever, comme ça je suis serein (les seuls trucs assez gros et solide qui pourraient casser ma pompe à huile seraient des bouts de coussinets donc...)

Bonjour, j ai 453000 km avec ma saab 9-5 datant de 2000, j ai toujours utilisé de la mobile 0w40 pour les vidanges mais là j ai le fameux sond de sifflement qui disparait aprés quelque minute, j ai changé le kit de reniflard de carter d huile, pcv valve mais a mon avis ma crepine est bouché et ma pompe a l huile a du mal a circuler l huile, je vais utilisé un additif de rincage d huile lors de la vidange on verra.Pour enlever le carter d huile je pense que c est mieux avec un pont levant , mais je comprend pas pour quoi il faut deviser les bras de suspension?

Si tu penses que ta crépine est bouchée arrête immédiatement la voiture car tu cours à la catastrophe! en fait je ne connais les 9.5 car je n'en ai jamais fais mais si c'est comme la 9.3 c'est le berceau qu'il faut desserrer pour faire passer le carter

psv1600 c est du a un son de sifflement assez typique, j ai trouvé ma reponse dans une video ds youtube, c est la pompe a huile ou le flux d huile aspiré qui émet ce son et la personne de la video precide que c est le debut des problemes de crépines bouché, pourtant j ai toujours utilisé de la mobile 0w40, bref je vais vidanger avec l additif de nettoyage et on vera, merci pour la video c est bien expliqué

Good vid. I may have to do same on my 2000 9-3 (194000 km), altho the oil pressure light does not indicate a problem (yet). Sludge is caused by the PCV system not working properly. See my YT channel, 316 Automotive. Look for the PCV episode & how to test/fix the system. Also, your english is fine:) Maury

Bonjour; c'est encore moi! J'ai une fuite d'huile soudaine sur la 2002 saab 9-3 SE convertible. La fuite est du cote passager du moteur. c'est de ce cote que se trouve la pompe a huile , the front crankshaft, the timing chain and the balance chain (mon vocabulaire francais a des lacunes!) je vais essayer de faire la reparation moi meme car mon mecanicien local me demande plus que la valeur de la voiture. est ce que vous avez une video ou des procedures ecrites pour remplacer the timing chain and the balance chain. eSaabpart.com vend un kit pout 370USD. Je vais ausi en profiter pour enlever et netoyer the oil pan and the strainer. merci d'avance

Bonjour, ton français est bien meilleur que mon anglais ! non malheureusement je n'ai pas de tuto la dessus, à tout hasard à tu vérifié que la fuite ne viendrais pas du joint de couvercle d'arbre à came et suinterais le long du moteur? C'est une pièce qui ne tiens jamais longtemps, et particulièrement sur les côtés où il y a des demi cercles à la forme des arbres à cames. A bientôt

Salut Yvon, oui c'est la pièce 8822041, mets de la graisse (pas trop!) pour tenir le joint en place lorsque tu remets le couvercle, c'est la galère sinon!
