@@junocheyennekrakus5004 Mercedes isn't making any modifications to my van or my meter, so what you say is not possible. Not sure where you get this information. No past recalls have effected this meter function and there are no new recalls that I know of. Please share a link if you have credible information.

My first recommendation when looking at a sprinter, have some mechanical knowledge or a pocket full of money. German engineering is no joke. And parts are expensive. And yes I own a 2005 high top. Long WB. And do all my own repairs major and minor, just remember this is not a Chevy, Ford.not trying to deter anyone from buying one just understand what you are getting into.. this channel does good vids, just wish they were a lil longer..

a little late to the party but I noticed the glowplug comment! pretty sure the comment is related to the P2822 code that popped up, which on these vans isn't a GP code but actually an indicator of downstream issues from the T21 recall firmware update.

Hi florida van man. Your content is great thank you for taking the time. I hope you don't mind me asking? The test for blow by with a loosely sat oil filler cap. Mine jumps and rattles, I wanted to be sure it isn't just engine vibration. I put light revs on to steady the engine and the cap is perfect then. What's are your thoughts please.

First, a cap dance is not something to worry about in a van you own, drive, and know. It is a reason to worry about a van you just met. Several things can cause it, as simple as a vacuum leak or as serious as scored cylinder walls. Extreme cap twerking is a sign of possible holes in the pistons. A little dance is usually a puff-puff-puff and when we rev-up it becomes a steady blow so the cap will settle out, still releasing the pressure. You can pull the hard hose off the vacuum pump and simulate a BIG leak. If the cap dances more put your thumb on the pump inlet to simulate* no leaks at all. If that does nothing interesting take the little soft hose from the turbo inlet and plug the hose. This will simulate a 100% clogged crankcase breather. If it doesn't dance more with the breather blocked by your thumb, it is probably blocked internally and causing the dance. MillionMileSprinter has replacements for about $450. We do NOT want cheap alternatives to this part.

Thanks for the video. I am going to inspect a 2003 tn1 camper next week, it is 5 cylinder om612, the odometer 160k and it has a sprintshift gearbox. Really don’t know that gearbox good or bad~ But, we will see;)

Bad gearbox, essentially a manual gearbox with hydraulic robotic control, if it goes wrong you will struggle to have it repaired, I live in Scotland and very few mechanics will touch them. I would avoid.

I have a 2005 Converted to a Legend by Great West so thank you for all of the info. We have had troubles on the road many times but are getting less. Last time was my water hose popped off of the water pump and drained the radiator. Engine died (shut off by computer to protect the motor) we found the problem fixed it and runs purrrrfectly still so very happy. I have had the window rust repaired once already but it is returning...any fixes for this?

I think I saw your van this week (online). Did you take the wheel flares with running boards off?

So I got my sprinter (2004) before I saw this. There is a lot of blowby when you crack the oil cap. Now what? It still runs good and gets great mileage. I’ve had to put on a new egr. Should I get rid of it and look for another one?

Hi guys, greatly informative, useful and entertaining videos. I just bought a 2003 Dodge Sprinter in NE OH. 81,000 miles, wintered in FL summered in OH, very clean. I didn't see your buyers guide until after I bought it, so I was a little nervous about the results I would find working my way through the list post purchase. Excited to say it passed with flying colors! Thanks for the insights and suggestions. I do have a small leak around the transmission pan seal. The part where she says “the towing mirrors are nice… especially on the longer ones” I drive a 3500 SHC for work every day, no tow mirrors and only has the standard sliding door glass, no rear door glass, but its a company vehicle, and you cant see where the back end of it is worth crap, its just a guess 🤣

I havent seen it in person yet, but from what I can tell, its got DPF but no DEF. Think its worth a look? Its outta state, so Im just wondering if I should travel.

We are admittedly very biased and only collect T1N Sprinters, so for us, any NCV3 is a "no-go". I believe the Autel AP200 will work with both vans and the cap dance test is valuable on any engine. Best of luck and drop us a note any time we can help.

The particulate filter could still cause long term problems, as they get clogged and from what I understand the “regen” process directly injects diesel fuel into the particulate filter in an attempt to burn it off. If the regen does not complete, that’s when problems can arise as it may not always resume the regen. Or, you’re home now and ready to shut the van off. If you plan on using it exclusively on the highway, you’d be fine with it. We like to use our Sprinters for a mix of 75% highway and 25% around town travel. The other problem I see is accessibility of the V6 engine. When you open the hood in our vans, most of the engine is accessible and only one bit of plastic engine cover stops you from tearing things down. The V6 has a large intrusive air box above it, which while not impossible to remove is only the tip of the iceberg. IMO, the V6 is an inferior engine and from what I understand, non-rebuildable.

What code reader do you have? Most readers will use generic OBD protocol and that won't work with our vans.

We appreciate the suggestion and the careful way you expressed it. It is not a masterpiece and we will likely make a better video as we grow with experience. I cannot disagree, $15 for a few pages of a checklist does not sound like well spent money. The hopeful value in the checklist is the phone number and real-time support while you are looking at a van and have a question. I'm not the best Sprinter guy in the country, but I do have many years and miles experience driving, fixing & especially buying broken Sprinters. If you find it is not helpful and don't find reason to text questions for immediate reply, I will refund your purchase. Let me go a step farther and say, even if it is helpful and you do text me while in someones driveway, I will still refund your purchase if you detail feedback and include any ideas you feel would make it better. Your ability for constructive criticism without being unkind is very appreciated. Cheers.

bought a T1n nearly 10 years ago.. Perfect for our office equipment business.. high roof, city model (144" wb).. have lost 1 engine ,(many miles from home base ) had it towed to the only capable repair facility within 50 miles..... a Mercedes dealer!! They quoted $12K to rebuild... but then found us a used (50K miles) engine & installed it for $8KI... 150,000 miles later, (fingers crossed & many codes later...) STILL running like a champ.. 20 MPG & 16-18 when towing a 4000 lb trailer. Not the prettiest one on the block, but..WE COULDN'T live with out her.. Absolutely, get a $70 scanguage AND ALWAYS use it!!! Great vehicle... in spite of its German electronics!

Hello. I have 2005 4x4 Sprinter, manual 5 speed gearbox. Do you guys know if the 6 speed manual gearbox from newer sprinter vans fits on my 2,2 ltr engine. Or a 2,7 ltr engine, same model.

We only have the NAG1 auto transmission over here in the states. But if you send me a 4x4 manual gearbox I will find a way to fit it. LOL

Yeah what is that, because I have that too on mine. It's not condense from the AC because there's no AC present on mine. I think it's a blowby leak off tube. I hate it when oil is coming out of it.

That was the AC condenser dripping at 10:41. The Vista Cruiser was running the AC the entire ride over and naturally was left on while we were checking fluid levels.

The blowby leak off tube should be feeding into the turbo lines, at least that's the case on our north american Sprinters.

@@FloridaVanMan Sir, you are the God of Sprinters. I have a German 208 cdi from 2001 also a shorty. No EGR, no turbo resonator, and bypassed start error. On mine a part goes back to the turbo and a part goes through that spot at 10:41. I can't figure it out and no workshop manual mentions it 😖

I'm not quite sure what part you're talking about, the oldest Sprinters we've seen here have been the 2002 models with the OM612 engine. We didn't have nearly as many options and configurations and were mandated EGR from the start. On the 612's here, our blowby tubes also go into the front turbo hoses. It is very possible that your model is old and did not require that blowby be fed back through the engine/turbo system and instead just drip wherever. Hence why the workshop doesn't mention it!

5 cylinder 2.7 liter came in two versions, OM612 & OM647 in North America. Any 2006 or older Sprinter will have it with 2004-2006 being the better of two slight variations. Some RV's show a model year 2007 but the van will have 2006 manufacture date.

@@FloridaVanMan Is this van for sale?! Me and my boyfriend are looking for a T1N sprinter OR a Ford Transit to vanlife in. This video is super helpful, but we would love to check out any vans you have for sale.

50% of buying a used T1N with 100K or more is finding a driver who has habits that prolong the result of wear and tear on the van. About 85% of Sprinter drivers (not Amazonites) do not know how to drive the turbo Diesel so we see problems stacking up at 100-140K miles and it requires lots of mechanical to reverse the conditions. These drivers with 400 to 800K miles on the Sprinter; they know how to drive and maintain the vehicle, simple as that. I explained to my mother that racing a cold MBenz 6 cylinder in MO winter before throwing it into reverse to get out of the garage was bad news. She still did it out of habit. The rods were gone at 120K miles. The trans was slipping at 140K. She said, "I've got all the receipts for service from the dealer and we have spent a lot of money on that Mercedes!!" Some people should stick to a 6 cylinder Chevy car and just keep buying cheap tires. My parents had no business buying an import of any kind!! She ran the rods out of a new Oldsmobile I got for them at 70K.

Precisely why I "like" high mileage sprinters. Sure I dream of a rust free T1N with 50,000 miles but the reality is 500,000 miles is easier to find. The only one I bought with under 300k was my first, right of the lot in '05. It has 497k today and my butt was in that seat for 99.9% of them. I'm not as diligent as I could be about warming up, but I try.

@@FloridaVanMan I run that Rotella T6 with the 5W40 (Chicago cold) and now I came across some T6 with 0W40 and I will mix that 50-50 for the winter. the 0W40 T6 is not rated as high as 5W40 but letting it warm up, etc. it should be fine. I still change fuel and oil filters every 10K. Making custom furniture and wood products; I run almost empty most of the time and I have added an air foil to the back that gives me 3 more mpg from 40mph and above and the highway side winds are a thing of the past. Speaking of butt, I had to replace the drivers seat a year ago. Just wore out on the entry side. You can switch seats, but, there was a flood of bottom cushions by old Dodge dealers so I got one passenger side for less $$. The drivers has a better suspension.

Fantastic information, except the multiple ads. I bought an 02 from a dealer, signed an as-is statement and drove it home. Test drive was fine but drive home had black smoke, little power and the top air hose feeding the engine near the egr sometimes collapses when I rev it up. I heard the egr could be at fault. Is this true? I found a broken pipe that feeds the first cat from the turbo. Is it possible that the lack of heat buildup in the turbo is causing the problem? I am currently working on trying to correct the broken pipe to see.

I'm sorry about the ads, but they help feed Florida-Van-Family. From your description, it sounds like your charge pressure hose, the big one, is collapsing? That hose should be filled with boost pressure, not a vacuum, so I would be looking at the air filter and turbo first.

Yeah, I certainly understand about the ads. Everyone needs to make money. (: Yes I understand that the hose is a pressure hose. I checked the airbox and hoses, all are clear. My thought is that there is not enough heat to get the turbo spinning with the broken exhaust pipe. I may just be on denial that the turbo is failing. (: I will also check the turbo resonator. Your thoughts are appreciated and I will keep you posted as any information may help everyone.

If you take the hose off the front of the turbo, you should be able to spin the turbo's guts. If it stops spinning sooner than you can get your hand away from it, that's not good. It won't spin long, less than a half second. But it should spin for an instant after you let go.

Okay, I cleaned the EGR but it was not like those on others sprinters that I have seen videos on. It had no water cooling, was simply a mushroom valve with a push pull actuator. Pretty simple. I took the inlet hose from the turbo and gave it a spin, felt perfect. Scratching my head because no codes have been thrown. While I had the turbos air inlet hose off I fired it up and it came to life, running like new. Further inspection yielded a mouse nest blocking the screen on the inlet hose from the airbox. I had overlooked checking this area earlier... It was in a difficult spot to see. I'll sleep better tonight. Thank you again.

Burned from heavy hauling, slipping gear or way past due for fluid change. Does it smell burned or just really bad? It is going to smell bad... but burned is worse.

I find more treasure on Craigslist. $8k isn't dreaming for an old Fed-Exer. High miles is probably better than low, especially from a fleet like Fed-Ex.

@@lowkeysoft Inspections are $150 plus travel. Miami is 250 miles so $500. We have been there to see a few vans and found a bunch of crooked deals and questionable salesmen. We have learned to sort out the bad eggs before driving to look at lemons.

If I am trying to purchase a 2004 T1N that wont start and the seller says the only thing that's wrong is that the EGR valve is messed up/not working properly, would this be an expensive repair and is it worth buying.

Well, the seller is wrong or lying to you. A bad EGR will not normally prevent starting, in my experience or my reading. If you don't know Sprinters, don't buy one that doesn't start. If it is under $1000 and you want to learn, it is a fair bet and probably one you can afford to lose. But it is going to be a hard lesson starting with a no-go and having to learn as you go.

The only time I looked T a non-running sprinter, the guy gave me a load of crap, let me drive 3 miles one way, expecting I wouldn’t know to pull the cover and look for Black Death. He disappeared saying “text me” when I started pulling out the tools. Would not respond. I know you folks can much better figure out not running/why not running, but I learned to not trust anyone. The unnecessary 6 hour drive was irritating, but not as bad as buying a bad Sprinter would have been. Buyer Beware.

So... i took the cap off from oil refill and is shaking more than i saw that mine is dancing wild. What could be the problem???

Vacuum leak can be tested by removing the vacuum line, big hard plastic line across front. Cap should* dance more with this pump open on the engine. Plug the pump inlet (not the hose) and the cap should settle down. Whatever dance is left is something not vacuum. Clogged cranks breather, worn valve guides, cylinder walls or piston rings are other possible causes.

@@ionutmihaimoldovan6258 I was referring to the vacuum pump. One of the things that can cause a cap dance is excessive air flow from the vacuum system. That pump is on the front top of the engine with a large hard plastic line to it. When you take that hard line off the pump you get maximum air flow, as if there is a giant vacuum leak. If you then put your thumb on the hole that tube came off of that will stop all airflow to the vacuum system. So if the cap dances with this vacuum pump inlet plugged, your dance is not caused by vacuum leaks.

Correct. Look up Chicken Tax. It is an old rule regarding importation of many things from chickens to small trucks, but has no effect on "Vehicle parts" or passenger cars. So by placing the transmission in the cargo area, they avoided a heavy tax that was not levied on passenger vehicles of the same build.

That explains why they have transmission problems😂

Florida Van Man yes absolutely! Throwing a lot of engine codes,... but the main problem is P0730, which I believe is throwing my trans in limp mode. All the auto part stores aren’t giving out their computers to clear my codes, so I’m kinda out of the water. Has a lot of glow plugs circuit open, and Heater block A circuit open and a camshaft sensor code too. At the least I’d just like to read the codes, maybe do a full reading on the trans while driving, and then clear them to see if they come back. Van drives fine until I use the shifter between P, R, and Drive after driving for a little while, or if I go over a large bump. Kinda stumped over here.

@@jonathanmellas9716 Most of those codes are probably from a low battery start, and any auto parts store code reader isn't going to do what you want. Some will read and clear codes, but some of the codes translate differently for Sprinters, therefore the generic scanner can give you very wrong ideas. Autel's AP200 is the best cheap scanner we have found at $70 on Amazon. But it does not talk to the transmission. Seems like it should, and maybe I just don't know the right sequence of menu choices. If you have not checked the trans fluid level, start there for sure. You'll need to buy the dipstick or go to someone who has one. Assuming it has enough fluid, the next place to look is under the driver's seat. You will find a trans control module suspended flat under the seat. Two screws and a clip to take it out. Inspect the connector for "wet". If it is wet clean it with parts cleaner and dry it (wait) before reassembling. Being that the problem shows up on bumps and after using the PRND selector, I suspect the problem is in that PRND assembly on the dash. But troubleshooting that is something I am still figuring out.

I just bought a computer to communicate with the van and read all the codes so I’m excited to see where that takes me! I’ll check the battery and see if that is good. Thanks

Taking the oil cap off and seeing it jumping is completely normal on any diesel engine, it does not mean that the engine has exesive blowby. It is also not a good way to judge overall health of the engine. Oil and some smoke will also be present. If the cap is flying off completely and the blowby is tickling you beard, that's a different story

Most Sprinters we inspect do not cap-dance vigorously and when it does, it clearly means something in that engine is not perfectly normal! Clogged crank case breather, excess vacuum air volume and other things can contribute to dancing caps. A little dance and even a little hop is not necessarily blow-by, but when shopping for a used van, too much cap dance is good enough reason to keep shopping.

That's my daily driver that I bought new in '05. I wish I could tell you I've treated it well, but honestly I've abused it and it still shows me love most days.

That beep is annoying with headphones

That beep is annoying in real life too! :O) It is an important reminder at times so I don't disable it. If I could, I would turn it down in the video but I'm still learning video editing. I'll try to be mindful of it in the future videos... Except the one I'm making today. My apologies in advance, hehe. You'll know the one when you see it.

Brand new stock headlights are not any different in terms of light output than the yellowed stock ones. Trust me. Maybe you missed my video on headlight polishing that came after this? ;) The only way to get truly better light out of a T1N is HID upgrades. I still take care of my Sprinters even though at this time the headlights were not polished ;) Let’s see your Sprinter then!

$350 for a pair of new lenses with bulbs that have the same light output as stock yellowed headlights did not make sense at the time. Cleaning the headlights made such a slight change in light output that I wound up buying the HID upgrades on millionmilesprinter.com HIDs provided the light output we’re looking for ;)
