Van Tour of Carey's T1N "Van Diesel"

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

"Van-Diesel" is a work in progress, and the progress is beautiful. Carey has been restoring his one-owner 2003 Sprinter for a couple years. As I watched his early progress online I sometimes wondered,
"What is this guy doing?".
When I finally met him and looked at his van I thought,
"Oh! Now I get it!".
It is an incredible van with 18 years of personal history and irreplaceable memories. Buying any other travel-van would be like trading in a beloved family pet.

    Thank you for the great videos! I just came across a pair of sprinter vans which are former FEDEX vans. the guy selling them wants $5k for both (he will not split them up).. they’re both year 2005 with the high top and 158” wheelbase. Van #1 has 294k miles, it does crank and start, has minor rust around the windshield, no rust around rocker panels, interior is a bit beat up, and it’s making a knocking noise from the engine. It also has significant blow by (oil cap dances way too much), it also has the Black Death around the injectors as well, and some oil leaks. Van #2 has 345k miles. It does not crank nor start. as soon as you turn the key, the AC fans turn on,we believe it’s related to an ECU issue (I did ground pin 44 and checked voltage at pins 1, 3, and 5 and there was voltage in them. Also, we did swap out the ECU with another vans and we got the “error start” message on the dashboard), it has very little to no rust spots around the windshield, it has the better of the two van exteriors, has heavy duty shelving in the back on both sides of the van, it also has two lights and a fan back there as well, heavy duty rear step to access the rear cab, no signs of Black Death, and the interior is beat up/worn due to the miles and lack of care from previous drivers. What do you think is a fair offer for the guy? Is 5k a steal or too high since neither van runs.

    $5k is a steal and I'd buy that deal twice if I could. Sounds like you are on the right track, the start error can be resolved with a little more parts swapping. Move the ECM, SKREEM and the little chip out of the key from the knocking van, all to the one that won't start. Or send the ECM to SOSdiagnostics.com The knock could be an injector failing but a big cap dance with it means the engine is probably gonna need big work. BUT a rebuilt engine will cost under $8k and in a rust-less van it is worth $12k.

    @@FloridaVanMan Thank you for the reply! Wow I didn’t realize it was that good of a deal. I asked for his permission to remove all three components from the knocking van over to the one with the bad ECU. He said if I got it running (with his help) then I could keep the parts and the price of the van would jump up to 5k (he would then keep the knocking van). And he wanted the money up front. I wasn’t comfortable with that deal since i didn’t know if the van with the bad ECU was going to have a knock, blowby, an issue with the transmission, knock with the injectors, etc. The seller is a diesel mechanic and says he kept a van similar to those for himself. His personal van was making the same knocking noise. So he tore the engine apart and found a broken valve Spring and a dropped valve which is what ruined the cylinder and caused the knocking sound. So he “rebuilt” the engine and the van was running perfect. However, it was short lived because he soon heard the same knocking noise in a different cylinder. When he took off the valve cover he noticed another valve spring was broken. He says he’s ordered the new valve springs but hasn’t got around to replacing them. So he believes the same thing is happening to the knocking van up for sale. Are parts for these vans easy to come by (to rebuild the engine)? Does MB sell components to the average person or is there limited access? I’m thinking maybe I should give him his asking price but I really would like to see the van with the bad ECU running.

    @@FloridaVanMan also, I did forget to mention that Van #1 with the knocking noise does have rust inside as soon as you open up the rear doors. I guess they didn’t protect the floor too well and you can see the ground. The other van with the bad ECU did have sheets of plywood covering up the ground.

    They are G-wagen wheels. We have 2 videos about the details of fitting G-wagen wheels on a T1N Sprinter. Stock G-wheels 265/60/18 is too big and will rub. 255/55/18 will fit without rubbing.

    What does he mean by "filling in the gutters"?

  • @nmartin5551

    @nmartin5551

    Жыл бұрын

    I was at the Winter Sprinter festival. He means literally filling in the rain gutters. If you google rain gutter fill, you will get a number of items. It’s to allow the water from the roof to just run off, instead of sitting and rotting the gutters OR draining down into the windshield tray so the leaves and dirt can hold moisture and rust.

    Like N Martin said, this makes a very nice look and prevents a common rust-zone. In the video I show a rear corner rounded and smooth. Look at the rear top corner of any other T1N and compare. I want to do it to my van BUT now I have an awning that uses the rain gutter over the sliding door. There will be a video on that awning coming soon so don't fill your rain gutters just yet. I wish I could post a teaser picture of it here.

    Mirrors for the women? 😂😂😂What a jerk.

  • @FloridaVanMan

    @FloridaVanMan

    It's not derogatory, just one of the many differences between most men and women, in general. Women will use that mirror WAY more than most men. This is not about vanity or frivolousness. Men don't often check to see if our lipstick smudges our teeth or mascara smears. Real men apply eyeliner without a mirror. HAHAHA. ....with a Sharpie!
