Fascinating video, Let's stop taking relationship and family for granted. I have battled depression since my wife left me. I have tried all I can to make her see that I love her with everything I am made of but she has insisted on leaving. This has made me so empty, and I do not know what to do. I can barely function properly at work. I am frustrated and miserable. I really miss her.

Your pain resonates with me. Letting go of someone dear to your heart is an immense challenge. I found myself in a comparable situation when my 12-year-long relationship ended, and I struggled to accept it. Despite my efforts to reconcile, I eventually turned to a spiritual counsellor for guidance, which eventually led to a reunion. I'm now filled with joy.

Happiness is a choice! My mom had a mental breakdown when I was 6 and fractured my hip. She was in and out of the mental hospital growing up and a psychiatrist sat us four girls down and said one of us would most likely to have this as well. I remember clearly saying “Oh, hell no!!”. I was not getting that death sentence. I believe I have a predisposition for chemical imbalance, but I have the CHOICE to keep my brain healthy! Thank you for pouring this health into us daily!

I Agree ; mental illness in our families is the worst thing ever ; especially when that Family member doesn’t believe they’re ill; refuses Treatment, therapy . I have made A conscious decision to seek Therapy during traumatic periods of my life , exercise & eat healthier, do Yoga 🧘, meditate & exceterA. I hope to God I don’t ever get Schizophrenic or bipolar disorder; it’s A terrible illness. Positive mindset & gratitude 🙏🏿 is key to Happiness in Life!!

I am so glad that the stigma around mental health is changing through education. Also so much has been learned about addiction. My mom had mental health issues but was never diagnosed because she blamed everyone else for her problems so she never got help. My worst fear is that I will be like her. It’s hard because I loved her but she caused so much suffering to all of us kids and I’m angry. I remind myself “ but there by the grace of God go I “. LET IT GO!!!!! I am blessed beyond anything someone can due to me because of my greatest gift of faith. Amen. Sermon over !

Honestly, I never heard before about PTG (post traumatic growth). In this video I heard about it the first time. And it really interests me, I really admire those people who can grow from their unlucky situations. If I thinking about it a little it's about you have two way when you are in a miserable situation: 1. option: You start thinking you will never get out of this, and you become pessimistic, and you say to yourself "this is what life gave to me, so I just have to accept it". OR 2. option: You try to start thinking in a positive way, you become more optimistic and saying to yourself: " now I'm going to get out of this sh*t, no matter what, and I am going to throw away my victim mentality because it just makes me more miserable, and I want to feel strong and powerful" !

Becoming anti-fragile! Finally a term for what I'm always trying to do....sometimes with much success, sometimes with less success....but always getting at least a wee bit stronger. I have felt hopeless at times, but eventually I realized I did still have a choice left, but it was one I thought I'd never have to make and didn't want to have to make. Realizing it gave me the strength to make the choice, and once again have hope. It was HARD and PAINFUL, but I did grow by making that choice and following through! And am happier after having gone through it.

Thank you Mel and Dr. Tan Ben-Shahar for this amazing podcast! I do understand now that it is natural to experience pain and to believe that someday I'll get over it. Taking care of my well being is important in order to be happy in life. Taking small action in my present moment can make changes in my situation. Happiness is when I take simple steps in improving myself until I notice that I am are no longer in a difficult situation and moving forward. :)❤🤗 God Bless both of you!🙏👍❤

'Awareness is the key that unlocks the answers that lie within' is a quote I wrote back in 1998. Awareness IS the beginning of being able to work through personal issues. And, there is a process. We need to listen to our inner voice, feel our feelings, and we will come out the other side of trauma. The process always works.

This was painful. I guess my expectations were high. I usually get a lot from your podcasts. This episode is like mining for gold. Three quarters in he said something very important about even meditating for one minute will change your life. Meditate for a minute three different times a day will give one the happiness of a 45 minute workout. It’s possible. If I can last through a 45 minute workout or any length workout for me it’s an achievement. For me recovering from the death of someone close means you get through it. But for me & another I talked to, you never get over it. Definitely my challenge is to establish the routines for goals that I could be in repetition. Then I will have resilience & happiness. I will have conquered the hard thing & thrived. Thanks.

But having to move back to a place i grew up in and worked hard to get out has been taken it's toll. there is no work here other than working in a hot dog shop standing in front of a french fryer. i had to give up my whole career and life. it's gettting harder every day....

On the subject of happiness. I have in the past been so unhappy that I just focused intently that I am going to be happy for 30 minutes. It worked 15 minutes in I realized I was happy. Sometimes I got a little too happy & became goofy like I drank 8 cups of coffee in a row. Unintentionally drank 8 cups of coffee in a row vibing through conversation with friends at a small town cafe.

@@Silence_between_waves it's good to explore positive things to uplifts Humanity. Happiness is an expression of feelings but it is not a part of the humans six senses. Our six senses are feeling, taste, touch, think, see, and smell. I am a spiritual being having a human experience. Happiness is a virtue and doesn't originate from our feelings and also can be accessed by your higher consciousness. When you refer to feelings, thoughts, etc. those are simply the faculties of the human senses. Happiness can be experienced through the six senses but happiness comes from our higher consciousness and occurs when we are in harmony with the truth of spiritual laws and virtues. These spiritual laws have been practiced by thousands of religions, and cultures for over 6,000 years. Ease and Grace to all!

Wow. That is correct to the core!! It seems like we play the same words over n over in our heads to comfort ourselves. We struggle to step outside the box. I’m living proof too. All the meds I’ve tried for nerve pain etc etc etc. I know my brain can make my body do what I tell it. I don’t have broken bones. Just broken systems. But not anymore. !! lol. Watching people fall apart makes me angry. Dialysis patients are some of the worst sadly. My husband has been an example that your mind can heal yourself. It’s a miracle for sure. Brain doctors should be our first choice to heal ourselves. Thanks Mel

Happiness is subjective. If people are generally miserable, they can be sold on romanticized versions of accountability.

Because a narcissist doesn't want you to be happy .. well I stopped being happy at age 5 and stopped smiling altogethe. I had to hide anything I was happy about. Because my covert Narcissist mother and malignant narcissist are now both dead 😌 I can actually show that I'm happy and smile now. So now I have to learn how to enjoy life because I want to know how to do that

Happiness is being content. If you pursue happiness, you’re not content about something in your life so you have to address the underlying cause of that specific thing. With all do respect, the guest seems to be discontent from the very beginning. He keeps changing from one pursuit to another. Imagine, being privileged to be in Harvard and being “unhappy”. Something else is wrong.

Brilliant talk… however, the suggestion to experiment with the truths is exceptionally delusional, dangerous and deceptive… and that’s exactly what had happened to M. Gandhi. He came to study in London, received the Bible, was so moved by the Beatitudes like nothing else moved him. Then he practiced Hinduism and died without hope. It’s a terrible gamble with practicing experimenting with the truth (s).
