How This Guy Secretly Became The Best Weightlifter Ever. | Aleksandr Kurlovich

Спорт

Kurlovich was the best weightlifter to never receive proper recognition from the public - He had the second best performance of all time locked in overhead TWICE but the jury didn't pass it.
Big thanks to weightlifting news agent, Lift up, Frank Rothwell and all other smaller channels uploading historic footage online. I love you all

The 266 red light call was not controversial. There is a rule that states that an athlete must show control, remain steady for at least a second until judges give a down signal. You can rewatch this video indefinitely and still see that his body rotation never stopped. It is an incredible attempt without a doubt, but a zero controversy

I also wish we stopped saying “greatest ever” or of “all time”. Kurlovich was the greatest of HIS time and era. If Taranenko, Pisarenko and Kurlovich were well and active today, they would learn the Georgian national anthem by heart by now. Lasha is the greatest of this era too, I’m sure someone else with come along to change that in the future

Great commentary and great editing.. even managed to borrow some of my footage ;) incidentally the lift by taranenko at 1987 ussr champs was 265.5 not 262.5kg .. it was a soviet record as was his 472.5kg total

  • Ай бұрын

Yurik Vardanian was one of the best ...his 400 kg total in 1980 in the 82.5 cat were amazing...may he rest in peace...🙏🙏👍

There are several great ones. Vardanyan was superhuman…. Pisarenko was nuts as well. And i like kakhiashvilli as well. Vardanyan’s Son lifted weights i believe ,but not at his dad’s level of course.

Курлович был выдающимся атлетом ! Я недавно увлёкся тяжелой атлетикой, поэтому не застал его карьеру, жаль что он рано ушёл ..., но в истории он навсегда !

I'll stand strong that yuri was the second best ever. He made a top 5 all-time total on 4 attempts, having made 5 kilos more in the jerk earlier that year. The fact that his total isn't 5 kilos more is sheer bad luck, the fact that a sub-super didn't make a 460 total was pure luck💀 that should not be a total a heavyweight is touching, or even thinking about.

I agree. For his size he was incredible though as most can agree Naim is insane. That 500 Sinclair is legend.

Actually an interesting thing is that almost all top 10 Sinclair weightlifters had a chance to rank top 2, but almost never top 1 - Naim was extremely far in front of everyone else

woahhh, you're amazing, you did a great, Kurlovich deserved a video like this one. My three preffer lifters are Kurlovich, Aramnau and Sorahb Moradi. In today's broadcast in iwf world championship, one of the two guys that he believes he knows everything about weightlifting and he knows nothing, he said that Lalayan of armenia was the fifth lifter able to lift 215 or more, that's not correct, he is sixth, the first was Krastev, 2 The big Kurlovich, 3 salimi 4 lasha 5 gor and 6 lalayan. I have seen any Kurlovich video in youtube but yours were one of the greatest i've ever seen

That 266 is a red light from me. His right elbow does not look locked out. Might be an issue with that arm. It is a shame because It is an insane lift. More people have walked on the moon than clean and jerked 266 in competition.

I've been a competitive powerlifter State Regional and National level for 25 years, but I've always appreciated the speed power and strength of weight lifters. As powerful as someone like Eddie Hall or any other Strong Man competitor is, they could never do what a weightlifter can do

Taranenko, Krastev, and Kurlovich all lifted with pure power. Almost all their lifts feature bar paths that have more in common with the art work of a 3 yr old than anything resembling a modern lift.

I’m actually upset they didn’t give him the down signal on that lift lol at least from that angle it absolutely looked like he had the weight overhead motionless and under control with feet in line. Maybe I’m missing something?

Did he dislocate his elbow earlier in his career, similar to Zakharevich? Even on valid clean and jerks, his right elbow doesn't look like it's able to fully extend, which was probably made worse every time he went for a world record clean and jerk, causing the controversial no lifts in 87 and 89 despite being as extended as possible for him.
