How Riding Modes Affect the DCT

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is another installment of the playlist, "Everything You Need to Know about the Rebel 1100's DCT." The video is a brief overview of the 1100's riding mode settings and their effects on how the dual-clutch transmission performs during rides.

    Great video Steve. I've had mine for about 3 months now and I've recently gone from standard to sports mode. I like the power but not the shifting pattern so I'm grateful for your explanation so I can set my own use mode. Keep it up!

    Great video. Your suggested custom settings are great. I have started with standard for a tank of gas… then rain.. then Sport.. then played with various settings and had arrived to a similar conclusion (with the exception that I used the middle setting for P-Power). I have since bumped that setting to full. The bike is a little jerky in first gear with that setting… but manageable.

    Papa Steve, love your channel and your simple and helpful advice. Getting possession of my Rebel 1100 DCT early next week. Newbie here, so wondering if Rain Mode is adequate for my first couple of months as you described, or should I program user mode with slightly different settings. Do you have any advice?

    Base your decision about riding modes on how expert you are as a rider. If you are new to riding, or have otherwise limited experience, use Rain Mode. Rain Mode will help smooth out your throttle mistakes. The 1100 is torquey at low RPMs so any novice-rider twitchiness on the throttle will make the motorcycle jumpy. Even experiences new owners need a few reps to get a feel for a new throttle and how the bike responds to it. Having said that, more experience riders should be fine starting with Standard Mode. The 1100 has a sensitive but well-behaved throttle along with excellent traction control and protection against accidental wheelies. I recommend riding the motorcycle for few weeks in Standard Mode before customizing User Mode. From the factory User Mode and Standard Mode are set up the same way. Get feeling for what you like and dislike about Standard Mode before adjusting those characteristics in User Mode. Two things to remember. The throttle is live. On a manual transmission motorcycle you disengage the engine from the drive wheel by disengaging the clutch. Then you can rev the engine to annoy the driver in the car next to you. The DCT doesn't have a convenient way to do that. At idle in drive, the bike will stay stationary, but when you turn the throttle, intentionally or by mistake, the bike is going to start forward. The 1100 is torquey, powerful and only about 700 pounds if you include a rider my size straddling it. Let's say, 8.33 pounds per horsepower. That power to weight combination makes the motorcycle very quick. I'm a leisurely rider, so I rarely crank the throttle wide open. I have no personal experience about this, but I have read that the DCT will go 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds. Be smooth on the throttle.

    Good explanation Steve. I've had my bike for almost 2 years now and I like the standard mode best. I change it up occasionally just for the hell of it though. Variety is the spice of like, eh? ;)

    My Goldwing, though a manual bike, has similar modes. I’m with Steve on “Sport” being extremely twitchy. I keep mine in “Tour” which is likely close to “Standard” on the Rebel. Ride safe Eric!

    I put a 500 deposit down at my local honda dealership for my Honda rebel 1100 dct. I don't get to really choose my color but I like 2 out of 3 of the current colors. Can't wait to get it. I guess what color I get will be a surprise also lol.

    I have a cousin who's a potter. He told me that opening the door to the kiln is like Christmas morning. I can appreciate your the patience you need to have while you wait for delivery. And, the excitement you'll feel when you find out what color it is, and the first time you swing that leg over to take it home. Which color don't you like?

    EB does not control how fast it downshifts letting off the throttle. It really controls how much the engine is slowing you down in its current gear. It works even in manual mode with no shifting, and it also works the same on non-DCT version.

    I stand corrected. Although I'm trying to wrap my head around the mechanical mechanism need to make that happen. It seemed to me Honda must be using the rpm shift points to control engine breaking, since engine breaking is an interaction between cylinder compression and gear ratio, and with using the gearbox, that is only controllable with the throttle bodies in concert with engine revolutions. I wish Honda engineers were more forthcoming about how they do this stuff. I wonder if any of my other viewers have some insight.

    @@papastevesgarage I don't understand how it works mechanically, but even on the manual transmission version you can tell the engine braking is higher or lower with the setting... its some Honda magic 🤣. Maybe with low levels of engine breaking it actually still uses a small amount of gas and its not 0% until you get near stopping... the fuel is completely computer controlled.

    What is DCT??

  • @papastevesgarage

    @papastevesgarage

    DCT is Hondas acronym for dual-clutch transmission. The 1100 DCT has a 6-speed automatic transmission with one clutch releasing and engaging gears 1, 3, and 5; and the other clutch engaging and releasing gears 2, 4, and 6. The transmission always has the next gear already engaged when a shift is required. To change gears, the DCT just needs to release one clutch while engaging the other. A dual-clutch transmission makes shifting gears nearly instantaneous. Smoothing out the shifts by electronically matching engine speed to drive gear speed, makes for quick, smooth gear shifts. That's one of the reasons most six and seven figure super cars have dual-clutch transmissions instead of manual gearboxes.
