    I’m 34 and would need pre-reqs and patient care hours. I’m in NC and had looked at wake but looks like they are currently accepting students for 2 years out. Since you can’t apply until have have all your hours & classes finished, I’m starting to wonder if med school would make more sense since it’s starting to feel like that’s the same time frame I would be looking at. (Assuming of course that I could get in) Any tips on trying to decide between the two? I do love the thought of being able to switch between settings more easily as a PA but have seen some podcasts lately talking about how PAs will be less preferred hires bc NPs have more autonomy. 😵‍💫🫠 it’s all so confusing

    I started prereqs at 32, turned 35 on our first official day of PA school, and will be 37 when we graduate. It’ll be worth it!

    I love this guys transparency! His honesty! I wish more PA’s where like this. I’m 42 and I just finish getting my prerequisites for PA school. When I was younger I wasn’t delt the best hand. Long story short I was had the chance to go to school and I did. So here I am now working my way to PA.

    My husband is finishing up his didactic year at 30 years old. There is only one other person older than him at 36 but he is the only one with a family. I was definitely disappointed that out of the 45 people in his cohort we seemed the most seasoned in life as most were new grads and it’s hard for him to relate to others throughout the year when you just have so much more life experience. I think it just depends on how you look at it on whether or not you’ll feel “behind” or not. To us, we got a slow start because we focused on marriage, enjoying and parenting our kids, and then traveling a ton before settling down to get serious about a career. So that time was well spent but I’m sure it feels different depending on how well you feel you’ve spent your time in the interim. People can work until they get up there in years and there’s nothing wrong with that. Why put a limit on if PA is worth it because of time. I think money, mental, physical, emotional capabilities, support network, all have much more bearing on if it’s worth it or not than does time. Heck. My husband might be a PA longer than a good chunk of the women who are much younger now but stop working when they want to have kids and focus on that verses working which will inevitably happen with some of them.

    Yes, life changes fast, and people do shift priorities your assessment is correct. Keep in mind, someone could get into EMS or a healthcare profession at age18 or 20 and still have years of experience and a family by age 26. I would say my cohort we had maybe 6 or so individuals above 30 but many were late 20's and nearing 30.

    @@JohnThePA I have been wanting to pursue the PA career. I am 29 years old down in Texas. My only concern is my wife and I have 5 month old and I am the only income. Is it possible to get enough loans, scholarships, or grants to pay for school, life, and mortgage?

    I was 30 when I got into PA school and finished when I was 32 in 2000. I taught after graduating from PA school. My oldest PA student was a 63 y.o. egineer from India. I also had a 54 y.o. student who was a biochemist, from Iran. 😊This was a great video with awesome advice! GO "older PA students"!😄👋🏽👩🏻‍🦳👨🏾‍🦳

    Hey John, when you were an undergrad, I’m assuming you did some sort of shadowing of a PA, I know that it is required you have experience in a medical field to get into PA school, how did you get that? thank you for these videos they so helpful

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    I only shadowed one PA for a few hours. My neighbor played golf with a physician who ran an internal medicine practice. My neighbor commented about me needing shadowing hours, and they organized a day for me to go in. I just texted the PA to coordinate the best time. You may have more luck with shadowing at a smaller operation, and remember you don't necessarily have to shadow a PA. If there is a doctor or NP there that will let you observe, then that could suffice.

    Unless you’re maybe going in on 60+ ( which I feel financially no job will be worth starting from scratch). PA school while it is a time commitment it’s only 6 years which in the grand scheme of things is not that much if you plan on working 20,30,40 more years. It’s not like med school in that sense where you have to have to delay gratification for over a decade+. Med school I would say needs to be completed in a reasonable time frame to really start building up wealth. PA on the other hand is much more forgiving and gives you a great salary for the amount of time put into it. I’ll be 32 when I graduate so and I am only 2 years older than the average matriculates st my school who are 28 according to the data.

    I’d want to agree but there are people entering medical school at age 50 and we all know how long that takes! At the end of the day, if someone’s heart is set on it then it’s worth a shot.
