Getting into PA School as an Older Student

Peace be to you ( As'Salama'Alaikum) all. I had a gentleman ask me a question about getting into Physician Assistant school as an "older student" (over 40). I am VERY pleased to say that MANY programs encourage older students! They have a maturity and health care experience that may not be seen in younger students. I did not start PA School until I was in my 30s. That was more than 15 years ago! And, a number of my classmates were considerably older than me! When I was an instructor in a PA program, some of the students I taught were in their 50s and 60s! I would encourage any of you with a genuine interest in becoming a Physician Assistant to not be intimidated by your advanced age anymore than you would your race or gender! Believe me, being a PA continues to be one of the MOST rewarding experiences in my life. If there is anything I can do to aid any of you in becoming a PA, please feel free to contact me. I am also on Facebook. If you are in the process of applying, I will look over your personal statement for your CASPA. Peace, Omar " Dr.O the PA Pro " Abdul-Malik DHEd, MPAS, PA-C, CHES

I never finished my BA so I know it will be a total of about 4-5 years to completion. Thanks for giving me the confidence at my age to do it.

Lakeisha Gibson What an amazingly AWESOME can - do attitude you have! 😊 You can finish everything by the time you are in your mid to late 40s . This may SOUND old to some people. However, you will be a PA with a GOOD 20 years of work ahead of you. Or you can even do consulting work in your super senior years like some of the post - retirement - age PA s I know. It's an amazing profession!

Hello nice to meet you. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am planning to go to PA school in the near future. Im 54 years old and I felt a little apprensive about going back to school. I already have a bachelor's degree and have taken several sciences classes at a community college. At first I was interested in Nursing but I changed my mind. I m also a retired NYC EMS workers and 2x World Trade Center 911rescue team. I took an interest in the Pa program because I want to get into Cardiac Thoracic surgery.

I'm applying to PA, but I don't have so much time to prep for GRE that I'm opted out for schools that don't require GRE. I know even if I study for GRE, I don't have good score on verbal either. It's more of a personal issues, and self insecurity. I think I'd prefer to spend more time studying my anatomy and physiology, biochemistry. I'm investing in another year of prerequisites to brush off my skills. Hopefully it all works out since I transition from Nursing to PA. The physician assistant (PA) profession was established in 1965 to address the shortage of physicians in the U.S. The first class of physician assistants was composed of former U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen. The program’s intent was to take advantage of the combat healthcare experience of Vietnam era military trained medics and corpsmen to fill the workforce shortages in medical primary care that existed in the 1960s. The curriculum for the first PA program was based on the fast-track training of medical doctors during World War II. (Wikipedia, 2016; Journal of Physician Assistant Education, 2007).

Hi Dr. Omar,First let me say Thank you for all the advice and helpful information you give out on your videos. Thanks for that. My name is Jeremy and I am currently in school for physical therapy assistant. I am supposed to graduate next year and I'm praying I do. I was a CMA (certified medical assistant) in 2010 however I never found a job as a medical assistant.I also have some college level courses done (like bio101) but never finished my undergrad in biology. I also don't have the best GPA. I am also a 28 year old black male with no children or martial agreements/ limitations. My ultimate career goal changed from occupational therapy to PA-C over the past couple of years especially since now in the state of Texas, Medicare/Medicaid will not cover therapy services to the extent they once did. I am just at a lost as to what to do from here. I love medicine and am fascinated with the field of gastroenterology. What would you recommend? Thanks for any advice you give me and sorry for the longevity of my post. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,Jeremy

Jeremy Jones Hey there Mr.Jones! Thanks for your question! I would say to contact a few schools to which you would like to apply. Find out what their requirements are (usually found on websites). TRY to complete those courses even if you have to take one course per semester. Also TRY to get your GPA to at least a 3.00 and, get your direct-patient-contact hours. You have some great advantages with the programs you have already completed. You remind me of myself. I had done SO MANY different programs and certifications but didn't even know what a PA was ! lol You can do it Lord willing. Please let me know if there is anway I can help you. • @omarabdul-malik8201

A Hud They will look on you quite favorably. When I interviewed prospective PA students, I looked for things like good character, steadfastness, and impetus for becoming a PA. I found these traits were often found in students who had struggled a bit academically. However, they KEPT striving to make themselves better! Please DO keep in mind that my perspective was unique. There are many admissions committee member who may focus almost EXCLUSIVELY on GPA and direct-patinet-contact hours. As a caveat, you do NOT want to have too many poor grades on your transcript (e.g. "D" s and "F"s). As PA programs have become more exclusive, many like to tout the "average GPA of their entering class" if it is particularly high (e.g. 3.65). I suppose this lends to the prestige of the program and profession. It wasn't always like this. I think that it will do what medical school has done; exclude many potentially decent students who would make fine doctors if not for a high GPA. I hope this information helped. You can post questions on my new channel also, if you want. I'll try to answer them as quickly as possible. PEACE!

Dr. Malik. Thank you for your video. I'am an army veteran who's been working as a respiratory Therapist for 5 years and finally got a courage to enroll in pre requisites for me to enroll in PA school. I just have three classes left before applying to PA school. Your videos are very encouraging and pushes me to pursue PA school even at age 40. However, I have one question that have been bothering me for quite some time. The question is do you feel after graduating PA school have acquired sufficient enough knowledge to treat patients efficiently. Or does it take years of experience after graduating from PA school to be at the level of physician in terms of knowledge . I've read quite a few posts from other PAs who are currently practicing and have stated that even after number of years working as a clinician, they've decided to pursue medical school because they could not shake this "acute sense of knowledge gap" when compared to their Physician colleagues. Does experience acquired after many years of practicing make up for this lack of knowledge? or is pursuing a medical school a better option since they provide more in depth education and training to practice in their chosen specialty. Thank you

Tae Lee Hi. That's an EXCELLENT question. In my opinion, the PA knowledge base does not compare to an MD/DO. They have had more than TWICE the training of a PA when considering school, residency and a fellowship. While there are residencies and fellowship for PAs , the knowledge gap is too great. We CAN perform on a par with physicians. However, there is a level of seeing (scientific and medical) the patient that we might not have . I'll do a side-by-side comparison of the two professions in a video. There are EXCELLENT PAs and mediocre MD/DO s. Some PAs choose to further their education by earning MD/DO s or doctorates in related fields. I would suggest those who TRULY have an ARDENT desire to become physicians pursue that route. Please see my classmate Dr.Niraj Minderata who went to Oceania college of medicine after working as an Orthopedic PA for 6 years.😊

Would it make more sense to do a Post-Bacc program or to take classes that are more science related. There is a university near me that offers a Post-bacc program, but I am not 100% sure if they offer the classes needed specifically for PA school (it is geared for Medical School) but I do not see myself going the Medical School route. What would you suggest doing?

Kristin Anzelc Hi Kristin. I'm sorry for the looong delay in responding. You should find out from the schools to which you plan on applying about the SPECIFIC class requirements before investing the time and money in a post-bachelor program. Some can be VERY costly (taking advantage of pre-med and pre-PA s students desire to get in). AND they DO NOT gurantee admission to the PA or Medschool. I hope this helped.

Great post! I'm 39 with a 3 year old daughter. I am considering PA school but I have been hesitant due to my age and being a parent of a small child. I have a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Management and have worked as a medical assistant and scribe in a pain management practice for about 8 years. I work side by side with PA's and I love the knowledge and skills they share with me everyday. They have been encouraging to pursue PA school. I still need to take the GRE and retake Anatomy and Physiology because it has been over 5 years since I've taken it. Have you seen any older students with small children complete the program? Would it be hard to obtain loans large enough to get through school without working?

Khadijah Hunter Hi there! Thanks for watching and for your questions! It CAN be difficult obtaining loans to cover ALL of your expenses for PA school ESPECIALLY if you have children, mortgage, etc. However, there are creative options. PLEASE consider joining the Health and Human Service Corps who will pay ALL of your expenses AND give you a monthly stipend! You serve them for the years they paid for your school by working in an under-served area (e.g. rural, inner-city, American Indian Reservations, Federal Bureau of Prisons, etc.). The cut-off age is 45. I had three classmates do this and they were quite PLEASED whilst the rest of us were scrapping up loans, grant, and emergency fund money to pay tuition. Sometimes, I want to kick myself for not doing this. Also, check out grant opportunities. For GRE studying, please see my GRE video. I do one in which I cover the actual exam, Lord willing! Finally, I did have students and classmates who had children (even some single moms) whilst in PA school So it is DEFINITELY "doable". You can contact me if you want to discuss this further. OAbdulMali@aol.com Peace!

Hi Dr. O! I'm currently working as a per diem Spanish medical interpreter @ a local hospital north of Boston, and also worked as full-time interpreter @ Duke University Medical Center. Although I LOVE my job, I'd like to pursue another health care career which is more mentally challenging and lucrative than medical interpreting. Which leads to my quandary: would studying to become a PA @ this stage of my life be ludicrous (I'm 57 without a B.S.degree)? I've attended a local community college on/off for the last 5 years taking pre-requisite courses to become a respiratory therapist but have abandoned that idea based on my 1st-hand observations of what RTs do on a daily basis. I've applied for both dental hygiene school and RN school this year and was accepted into both, but won't be able to start either one until Fall 2017. Dental hygiene appeals to me but based on internet research DHs have multiple part-time jobs with no benefits, their duties take a toll on the body, the job market is oversaturated, and it would be very challenging to secure employment as a male (especially an older one). However, based on my interactions with PAs @ my workplace and the numerous job opportunities for them nationwide, I'd REALLY love to become one. I feel I'd be an awesome PA; however, it would take me another 6 years to do so (@ which time I'd be 63). The clock is ticking and I MUST make a decision soon. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello, I have a BS in Health Education and Human Behavior from the University in Florida. I am 29 going on 30, and have decided to apply to PA school after working in a healthcare setting for almost 7 years now. I know I am not too old, but I feel like I have so much work ahead of me to do before I can even apply it is really starting to discourage me. I still have several prerequisites I need that was not required for my undergraduate degree. My question is, would you advised retaking any prereqs I took as an undergrad, which is over 7 years ago now. I know it is recommended (maybe even required for some schools) to have prereqs done within 5-7 yrs of matriculating. However, I am wondering if the number of prereqs I need to take for the first time will sort of "make up" for the fact that 3-4 of them are outside of the preferred time range. Thoughts? I regret waiting so long to start this journey, but I am driven and passionate. Working full time, teaching yoga part time, and still managing balance and sanity allows me to only take 1 class per semester, MAYBE 2. At this rate, it will most likely take me about a year to complete prereqs I have never taken. If I need to retake the others, this could delay me applying for PA school an entire extra year. I really dont to do this. I am typically and A/B student (hopefully all As this time around), with my only C ever being in Anatomy & Physiology I from my freshman year of college....I have yet to take the GRE. I have far more patient contact hours than I would ever need and I will have exceptional reference letters from physicians and other medical professionals. I feel these two things will highlight me as an excellent candidate. My concerns are really focused on figuring out what classes to take and how to complete everything as soon as possible. This is also made harder by the fact that every PA school requires different sets of prereqs. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I had a colleague who was applying for a position in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She went through an EXTENSIVE background check! karina hernandez HI! Thanks for your question! Well you HAVE to have a four year degree to apply to PA school now AND, take the GRE s . It WOULD be a good idea to get the Surgical tech credentials, then get your four year degree. That way you will have the direct-patient-contact hours that all PA schools require. MANY PA programs are requiring "paid work" on a professional level in order to qualify as direct-patient-contact hours. I think that this unfortunate because it is going to make becoming a PA an even LONGER process for most people. For example, a pre-PA student who gets a BSN (4 years), works for 2 years whilst studying for the GRE, and applies to PA school, gets in, through, takes and passes the PANCE, is looking at a 10 year investment. This is approaching medical school-like time. Unfortunately, the PA school experience is even becoming more expensive (4 yr. BS/BA + 2.5 PA graduate degree= > $100,000 in student loans).

HOWEVER, the caveat is that there has become so much emphasis placed on GPA, GRE scores, and 'working professional" direct-patient contact hours (i.e. as a certified RN,CNA, Tech, Therapist, etc.), it leaves out many fine potentials like yourself. I think that your pharmacy technician experience would be considered by most PA programs but not caring for your great grand mom if you are not an actual certified home health care aide. Your BS in Health Care Management should suffice as long as you have the adequate prerequs. You sound like an amazing person! To which school are you planning on applying?

Hi! I have four children and I want to finish my pre-Recs by time my children start school. I already have a bachelors degree in social sciences, and want to be able to also help people in their bodies alongside their soul and spirit. My heart is to be able to help financially provide for my family as my husband pursue useful time ministry as a pastor. In four years, I will be 32 and I believe I can get the rest of my pre-requisites finished. Have you seen this before? Have you seen parents of school age children in PA school?

Hi there! Absolutely! One of my erstwhile classmate's son, was enrolled in the same college. I had several classmates and students (when I was a professor) who were parents. It takes a great deal of drive and discipline. But, you can do it. I was 30, when I started PA school (in 97'). I'll help you however I can. You can contact me by email omarabdulmalik49@gmail.com 🙂👋🏽👨🏽‍⚕️

kalifala fane Make salat, LOTS of dua, give sadaqa, and try to keep your iman to the best of your ability. This may seem like weird advice in this day and age. However, I can ABSOLUTELY guarantee you that you will have the VERY best outcomes, waLahee! I think you should write your goals out and REALLY examine what you THINK you want to do. Where do YOU see yourself 2 to 5 years from now, 10, 15, insha'Allah. I'll do a video on how to set up "planning chart", insha'Allah!🤓

kalifala fane Also, I would say, get the VERY best grades you can, study for the GREs and, do something in the healthcare field like CNA or patient technician.

kalifala fane This was the best ADVICE i heard a professional give for a long time. Many are quick to say study and do hard, but subhanallah, we tend to forget how good deeds can take you far in life.

Hello, I am in my early 30's, I'm a mother of 2 boys(10 &7), a wife and a student. I am currently taking all of my core classes, which consist of alot of sciences and maths. I would really like to further my career as a PA but based on my academics I think I maybe wasting my time. I have hired a Tutor to help me with my math courses, which enables me to be a "B" average student in math. But in science... I'm averaging out to about a "B" or "C". When I look at the academic requirements to get into the PA program, I may not qualify. My life is very hectic! I am starting to think, maybe I should pick another career. Any suggestions?

Hi Denise! You may want to consider a two year degree in the health field. There are many GREAT careers like nursing and Certified Physical Therapist Assistant. They can make $100,000/year salaries depending on the setting. I am posting some videos about these professions. They are both very prestigious (if you are into that kind of thinking). I am a parent as well. My wife and I have four children, two of whom are getting ready for college. Being a good parent is FAR more important than any concept of prestiege or even income! I really respect and admire you for considering how going to school would affect your family, especially your children. 😊I hope this information helps. Please feel free to contact me if you would like. OAbdulMali@aol.com or (202)549-7136 Dr.O the PA Pro🤓

Of The Wind That's a very good attitude to have. I tell people to just think about the fact that you will be that particular age when you get there anyway. You'll be in your late 20s to early 30s (like 30 or 31) by the time you finish, but you will have your MPAS, PA-C.😊 Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you achieve your goals! Peace!

GOD BODY Science Wellll...I wouldn't say Nursing is "starting from the bottom". Think of it as starting from a different point. 😉 I started as a lab assistant during my freshman year of college WAY back in 88'. I obviously don't know you but, l have a feeling that you are a very DRIVEN person who is going to go FAR in life no matter WHAT path you follow!
