Just came across a part-time offer for a 3-4 year experienced PA at a family practice. 3 days per week without ANY benefits. PRN sick leave/vacation fill-in type role. $50-$60 pay. I recently called this practice to see if I could shadow their providers and they declined, saying they're understaffed right now. I wonder why...

This video could not have come at a better time. I am graduating in a few months and have multiple job opportunities that I am having a hard time deciding between. Mainly stuck between an orthopedic surgery job and a ER job. I was planning on doing ER out of school to avoid pigeon-holing myself, but the ortho opportunity pays more and is in a more desirable area. Any advice on whether taking a surgery job out of school would make it difficult for me to transition to ER in the future? Also, could I PM you somewhere to discuss the pay? Thanks John.

I infrequently check the john@pacrazy(dot)com email or you can make a free Reddit account and post your offer(s) anonymously to the Physician Assistant subreddit and see what other PAs think. I haven’t gone from a surgery role to the ER but starting off in orthopedic surgery is great and you can do really well there

I know it's a slap in the face because you can make $58/hr as a RCIS working in the Cath lab. Do you think me being a Cardiovascular Technologist for $55/hr base pay is worth it going to PA school for a pay raise? I was thinking about doing PA school only for a pay raise and feel like I would like being a First Assist PA. What do is the cheapest amount per hour a PA makes?

You’d likely get a 30-40k pay bump going the PA route in a surgical specialty and if you choose something like CT surgery it would be even more as they’re somewhere in the $160-200k+ range. But I wouldn’t just do it for the salary bump but also if you’re interested in managing the patients in the clinic/hospital as well.

Thank you for your input and response! Yeah I was always aiming to being a first assist in the CVOR but not at the lowest paying as a surgical tech and not as an RN because I prefer not to be with the patient for an entire 12 hour shift. So I feel like being a first assist as a PA would be the best where I would get to do what I love which is surgery but also be compensated for my time unlike the technologist position as a First Assist. Being a RCIS is very rewarding but unless I start traveling with it, I'm pretty much maxed out in what I can make base pay at $58/hr so I'm looking forward to start applying to PA school in 2025/2026.

The PA degree is a master's nowadays. While some practicing PAs may have the former associate or bachelor's training, those have been phased out.
