    Had my worst ulcerative colitis flares in PA school. But this isn't saying that it can't be done. Believe in yourself, try and study as much as you can but get in relaxation time as well with friends and family!

    It is challenging but it is doable- 95% + who got in graduates 🎓. I did it while working part-time during Didatic and full time during clinical year so don’t get intimidated by those who makes it sound imposible!

    Yea I’m gonna have to call BS on that. Didactic year is lecture every day 9 to 5. In my program it’s 8 am to 6 pm in lecture 3 days a week and 8 am to 8 pm tues and thurs. Clinical year you’ll be on rotations every day for 8-10 hrs a day. Unless your program lets you skip lecture and rotations, like I saw some Carribean med students do, you will not have time to work.

    I'm sorry to hear that Jackie. I would reach out to your program director and see if they have a counselor and/or could make any sort of accommodations for you. They've encountered these student situations before and want to see you succeed.

    Thanks for the video John! Love your channel, I'm a nontraditional pre-PA working in the ER as a Tech right now and find your videos super helpful! What does your ER schedule look like? How many days a week/hours per day do you work? Do they offer shift bonuses/double time pay for "urgent need" shifts or anything like that?

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm currently at four, 10-hour shifts/week but there are plans to transition to 12's. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half, which exceeds $100/hour. My sweet spot is 160-180 hours/month but my minimum contract is for 140. No overnights. On every other weekend. Patient load winds up averaging ~1.5-1.8/patients per hour for ESI 2-5. Some days I'm in the 20's and other days it's so slow I see under 10. As an ER tech, you already know how the ER goes! Every shop is different but hopefully this helps

    I do have a question. I'm currently in respiratory therapy classes and I'm wanting to go to PA school as my long-term goal. I know it's probably not the ideal method to get there, but do you think it would be beneficial at all, and what would be the pros and cons? I'm currently a PCT so I'm already gaining healthcare experience. Granted I'm not sure if that's what they look for. Maybe the respiratory therapy experience would be even more beneficial for PA school?

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    Your RT knowledge may be helpful if you're a practicing PA in the ER or ICU. Otherwise it's healthcare experience and hours just like everyone else albeit more unique than being a PCT or CNA.

    You are only paid during PA school as a full-time student if you find gig work or side jobs outside of studying. The program and sites do not pay you. It may be a few months after you graduate to actually begin your job since there is the board exam, licensure, and credentialing which need to happen

    I winged college. I got a business degree and winged every test. I graduated with a 3.78. I’ve read a lot of medical stuff over the years because I’ve had some medical issues and I’m a hypochondriac. How many tests in PA school are wing-able? Also, are any essays required?

    It’s literally one of the main factors of saving a persons life. What is “wing-able” about that. If you wing everything you don’t have enough care for it. Stuff like this come down to your passion for it. Not just “winging it”.

    NP school is easier than PA school- because we nurses already come with the baseline nursing / medical education. We know the medications, the disease processes and intervention already. PA's are coming in with no medical background and have to learn a lot within those 2.5 years.

  • @JohnThePA

    You need medical experience or exposure to get into PA school. Some Pre-PA students were nurses. Others were medics with thousands of hours of work.
