Certainly glad we made the move from a four storey townhouse to our wonderful narrow boat.
i just sold my liveaboard Narrowboat and living by the sea in Pembrokeshire. Loving it and yes boating is not cheap and was worried what I would do if became ill or immobile.
Absolutely brilliant . Informative and amusing. You are a couple of stars and you do cheer up many people's lives for sure. Can't wait for the Spring to arrive and your various livestock to appear again. I do miss silver fox but now realise it's the two wonderful people that continue watching. Many thanks guys . See you next week.
Some of those increases were eye watering guys. Very interesting even for those like myself who haven’t got a boat. I do have a motorhome though and might work out how that compares. Many thanks both.
Blimey £145,000 is far far FAR more (quite literally several tens of thousands of pounds more) than we paid in July 2022 for our large 3 bedroom semi-detached house with garden in Scotland. I mean ok we did get a jolly good deal on the house, but even so I'm shocked. So sadly simply on purchase cost alone Narowboats are now way out of reach for us, and this is why I will never now live the Narowboat retirement dream that I held in my youth. This is also why your channel has been so lovely to watch, and share the experience vicariously. Thanks for all your hard work.

@@joshua.910 I guess so - but it may shock you to learn that if you are lucky, and willing to do a bit of work you can almost buy a house in scotland for that! To be fair we did actually pay a bit more than that - so yeah you have a good point... but actually overall, living up here, the costs are surprisingly comparable. If my partner and I weren't able to work from home - and thus had to live somewhere specific, it would probably be a bit different.

@@joshua.910 I bought my 47' 1989 with a Perkins engine which would still be running if the boat sank through Hull rotting, not that that would happen but Perkins are just about THE engine just a touch noisy when your ticking over topping up the batteries. Get this, I paid £38k and although I haven't checked I imagine mine to be around ,£45k by now. Much better than paying 4 times as much

@Jacqui Newman think you're misunderstanding lol, she's talking about the price of a new boat.
So glad you took the time to do this. It’s all too easy to think that a boat is cheaper than a house. I have a friend who had a plane. It cost him 60k a year, he then sold that and got a boat, then he found it almost cost him the same, with repairs, mooring and buying the boat and just the cost of living. He ended up looking at it as a money pit.
That was eye opening! You missed the most criminal price hike of all though.... Grab bags of crisps and Oreo cookie choc bars have gone up from £1 to £1.25!! That should be enough to start a revolution on its own...
Fascinating stuff lads 👍 looking forward to the "how much it costs to live in the Highlands" vlog 😜😁👍
I have a 1bed flat and it costs me less than this even with the rent. The price for the gas and coal especially is nearly twice what I'm paying and you've got to buy the boat. If you're travelling, it's a beautiful way to see the country. But if you're just sat in a marina I can't really see why you'd put up with the lack of space or a bath, the emptying of the toilet etc. Great video lads;keep up the good work 👏.
Thanks for revisiting this topic. Your content is so enjoyable and refreshing. I always learn a little when I watch your videos and the presentation style is so fun and light-hearted. Leaves me with a little warm feeling inside I don't often get.
It’s really useful how you guys would allocate saving a bit every yr for expenses that were scheduled for every 3 or 4 yrs . Some folk would just wait to pay it every 3 or 4 yrs and if the funds weren’t available but other things are into it - they would be In trouble . With your method there will be funds set aside for future predicted expenses . So simple and brilliant . Give the boys a cuddle from Canada ( the dogs )
You two made boating simply so much more popular :) Very intersting video indeed, thank you for all this research.
You are still enthusiastic about your past boating, and your experience is invaluable, so much information and guide
entertaining and educational as usual - thank you guys. the main drawback I can see from my point of view is that I've aged 10-15 years in the last two.
I have followed your escapades sine the start of lockdown, I’m so impressed as to how you keep you channel current, excellent topic again. Love you guys ❤
It’s always a pleasure seeing y’all! You make my day!!!!
The pup looks gorgeous!!! Amazing the way that costs have shot up! Great vlog, again! Stay warm guys x
YAY! The Friday outtake giggles are back! :)
Very honest of you to tell the truth about maintenance, diesel costs etc. The licence is almost as expensive as council tax!!! Anyway Happy 2023 to you two lovely people.
I sure learned a lot. I love narrowboats.❤️Thanks for your research and sharing it with us.
That was very interesting and informative, thank you, liked it a lot xxx

Thanks guys for this very interesting and informative vlog. I can't wait to see the comparison next week. It's good to see that you are both doing well. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Great video! Oh, and a lovely selection of music. As always. Ye has good taste!
Great video and really interesting. Keep well and safe. James.
That's a brilliant run down of costings and will undoubtedly help many people. Thank you for sharing. Keep well. Try to keep dry ( think it's drier on your side of Scotland than here on the west!) Love to you both and the four legged friends.
Colin, Shaun, Really interesting. Great Vlog. Thank You.
Another lovely video, good information! ❤
How lovely that you had the great adventure of canal life when you did. I can understand why a nice cottage is a much better idea now. I am a firm believer that everyone needs to find a place that you are comfortable at around 50 or so .this gives you plenty of time to settle in and make it your home during the last stretch of being relatively healthy. I was enthralled by your narrowboat adventures and lived vicariously as I watched. Now you are embarking on my way of living. Slightly self sufficient and surrounded by nature, mine is much closer to hospitals than you because I need them..wishing you lots of love and good health..( no more kidney stones)
Pretty informative. I don't think I could live on a boat for as long as you guys did. It does look like a good alternative lifestyle and from watching your videos you saw a great deal of the country while living on the boat. I certainly enjoyed your videos describing each area.
Waiting anxiously for the next vlog! Cheers!
Thanks guys, that was SO informative especially as we're hoping to get our nb back on water this year. Your costings have been a great help xx 💕🐾🐾

Very informative vlog. Looking forward to seeing the next one with your house comparison.
Good one! Looking forward to next week!
Hi guys another great video, very interesting, best wishes to you both.
Greetings from Caliente. Expecting rain n snow mixed tonight, Temps at 28F. Snow for next 3 days after that and lows in the teens, but plenty of sun. At that we're doing better than a lot of places in the States. Your vlog made my head swim, I'd never b e able to work it all out. So well done lads! It was interesting though, I'll probably never put it to good use, since we're quite happy here and it's better for my health. Thanks for the vlog.
A really open honest and useful video for many to refer to. The icing on the cake will be the comparison next week. I suspect this will be a very well viewed video. Maybe another topic or a series ( even sponsored) could be a review of some second hand boats both brokerage and private…. Lot of work there but it would give those who are aspiring to live afloat or own a boat an idea of what they get for a range of budgets? Take care fellas….. I know if I had the choice of a remote Scotland house or a boat …. It would the the Scotland house.
Great vlog and an eye opener. Be great to see how it compares to the house figures. Best wishes ❤
Colin, you still look fab in your Super Dry togs! You are both very good at budgeting. I look forward to your next vlog on the costs of your home in Scotland. Cheers from Ontario!

Glad to see you guys again missed you terribly. I have sold my home of 49yr, 2950 sq ft 5-bedroom house, moved to a little 3-bedroom and 1700 sq ft house. Been donating lots of items to the Goodwill here in the states. I have to sell my king size bed and 2 long dressers, with huge mirrors, as none of them will fit into any of the bedrooms here in the new house. So just move furniture into house in December after renovating new home to fix my plans and still unpacking. How long did it take you guys to furnish your house and unpack all your belongings? My son and daughter-in-law bought me a laptop computer so just getting back into watching KZread again and the narrowboat channels I so enjoyed before.

Wow been awhile. Good to see you guys. I was just talking to my friend Curly Hare saying how we miss you. Hope your well.
That was very informative blessings g's to you and the pups
Hi boys and dogs what an insight into living on a boat, can’t wait to see how much better or dearer it is for your house. Very interesting and Sean just love your expressions and laughter you are so funny have great week 😊
Best outtakes in a long time! I 😂 Love you two! ❤️
That is a LOT it's sad that prices has gone up things ain't cheap theses days I think you both did the right thing sealing silver fox and moving up to Scotland and you're absolutely Spot on Colin
Thankyou sean and Colin, a very open video with the real costs of narrowboating. Just wondering if or when you fancy getting back onto the canals? Am enjoying your life onshore, and certainly looking forward to your model railway escapades! Its a great hobby that involves many modelling skills, and a great passion indeed, wishing all four of you much happiness in whatever direction you are heading in, and a great inspiration to others

Here, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, the average RENT for a one bedroom apartment/flat is... $2000 a month. That's just the rent. I would have to calculate my own budget, but it would be far, far cheaper to buy and live on a narrowboat! You are living my dream, you two. I'm so happy you've found your place in Scotland! Thank you for another wonderfully informative video! Great content and editing. Cheers to you, and to your sweet doggies and chickens and whatnot!

Thanks for the info guys i'm 58 and just going to retire and tour the cuts of the uk I hope in a narrowboat watching your channel has told me i can afford it 🍻🍻🍻🍻
❤ Nice one guys, awesome information. Just goes to show how much is going on in this country. ❤
I think you guys got your feet on terra firma at just the right time!
Great video and very informative. My takeaway on this, is that when it comes down to budgeting vs spending, its a case of horses for courses. And more often than not the spending wins out over the budget and crashes it big time. 😉 That said, I reckon that in many respects living on a Narrow Boat, is pretty much the same (and I'm not actually talking about which is cheaper or more expensive) as living in a house or living in a tent, that one has to have a budget, and be able to stick to it. The method I use in my budget for the costs, I add a bit more on the cost due to that is does tend to fluctuate, and therefore I at least I have that amount needed when it goes up. Well, with all of that said, and done. Trust you dudes had a great Christmas and New year. Be good, and if that can't be achieved, be good at it!
Great job collating all this info. Of course some stuff will be the same for boat or land, eg groceries. If you own a house vs renting there is slso maintenance eg ive had to replace some windows, garden fences will need doing, some minor electric and plumbing work. So probably similar
Another great video has always colin Shaun and little Otis and Ollie
Great vlog guys. Very informative The main costs that have gone up are fuel/energy and food costs, which affect us whether in a house or a boat. In addition my council tax is 1600 quit and due to go up 5% in April. Boat or house....mmmm? 🤔
This has put me off getting a narrowboat tbh. Seems ridiculously expensive
Have a nice weekend guys
As to costs then and now, I have to say ouch, but the mental benefits of a narrow boat against a house is that if you have neighbours who you don't get on with, you can just move away from them, take care!
@FoxesAfloat
Жыл бұрын
It’s actually the opposite. The neighbours you don’t get on with moor next to you at 10pm and leave their generators on all night. Much less stressful when they can’t get their boat near your house 😉
Thank you so much for your time and that video

Interesting comparisons wow that’s a lot of money but I’m sure it’s not much better living on land now a days thanks great outtakes nice to see silver fox again ❤
Thank you for the video lads, looking to move to London and I briefly considered the route. I think I'd still be saving money in a studio flat haha. Good to know it's always an option though, especially with the scavenging for wood idea. My sister had an old wood stove in her last place and it got surprisingly hot.
Interesting update
Now that was interesting lads. I'm looking forward to seeing the next video with house living budget. Well done for doing all the sums, it will be helpful to those planning a boat life. Hi Otis, l love your cute blonde hairdo 🤗 See you all next time....Alioban
Good one,❤️❤️❤️
Well done … as always.
Excellent one....xx
Pee myself at the articles saying cheaper to live aboard, they don’t mention maintenance, repairs, finding someone that can do them, having to be super organised, mooring and hook up fees etc etc…it’s definitely not all sitting in a straw hat sipping G&T while tootling along in the sunshine is it? (Mud,flooding, drought, snow, getting iced in…all, good fun 🙈🤪😜) Great and a bit 😮 to see price comparisons. We’ll all be living on nettle soup and acorns way thing are going 🙈 xx

Judging from your meticulously kept records jolly old England isn’t quite so jolly any longer. I know its a big surprise to you, me, and my dog named Blue but the USA seems to be damn less jolly every day. I’m waiting for someone to do as good a job of record keeping and tell us what it costs to live in the woods? You know leather cloths made from the game you kill and eat, shoes made of old tires, tent or cave as an abode. I just don’t think Daniel Boon would have survived. Great vlog!
Great vid.
So looking forward to seeing more about the lovely Ollie 🥰
You two are my favourites. Can not wait for your house cost run down. I am presently selling my house to buy a boat.

It's kind of the same type of increases people having here in the United States where we have a lot of people RV ing or I guess caravanning if you would full time. Used to be quite a bit cheaper than having a stationary place. In some cases it's still less expensive but not nearly as much of a discount as it used to be.. if we had the same canal Network here in New England like you folks over across the point if I probably do full-time canal boating. But we only have accommodations during the months so basically you have to travel down to Florida or wherever
Thanks for the information, although I don't think we'll be moving onto a boat. X
Very interesting.😃
Great video guys some proper effort and investigation put into this episode as always . The prices of everything is making my eyes water constantly the only thing at the moment not making my eyes water and making me anxious is your brilliant amazing entertaining informative content. I appreciate you guys cheers 👍🍻you guys keep me sane ish 😜
That was very interesting….sadly our expenses are averaging $400 a month more than one year ago. That is due to an increase in the value of our home which increases taxes and insurance cost. That right there increased by $181 last September. Add to that the high increase in groceries: Ground beef just rose to $10 lb from $5 lb increase. $100% increase there for what used to be the most affordable form of beef. Eggs (blamed on bird flu) has risen from $10 for 5 dozen to $28 for the same 5 dozen from the same store. Of course, everything else has increased 12 to 30% and rising. What I wonder is why is it the same World wide? I see it happening in one country, but why World wide? Will not share my thoughts on that here. I am looking forward to seeing your report on cost comparison from Silver Fox to your lovely home in Scotland.
OMG! Those increases are crazy!
Thanks!
