Costs of living on a NARROWBOAT: Winter 2024

Winter 2024 monthly costs of living on a Narrowboat.
There are a lot of assumptions about how cheap it actually is to live an alternative life, and I think its important to know that each individual experience will differ, but we we wanted to give an overview of our main monthly living costs this winter.
We are also happy to announce we are ambassadors at this years Boat Life 2024 which will be on 15-18 February at the NEC in Birmingham. Adam will be giving a talk on the wellness day (16th)
You can get £3.discount on tickets with the code floatinghome via this link: bit.ly/47Y37iy
We would love to meet some of you there!

We are Adam & Lauren, we live full time on board our 59ft Narrowboat with our dog Shanti. We are excited to welcome you into our daily life as we continuously cruise around the British waterways.

Very refreshing to meet with folk who understand the lack of dredging is the problem. Take you two.

Yes - actually VERY little maintenance or upkeep on any of the canals done by that taxing agency! Overgrown weeds, overhanging trees, poorly maintained locks,, lack of mooring in many areas, etc., etc. I'd suggest getting together with all users and filled a complaint. BTW, does the CRT pay people out of your fees?

Hi just looked at my costs and ours is a staggering £327.95 a month. And you just saved me some money as we were paying for river and canal license. But we live on a river. Thanks

I`m fortunate and paid my mortgage off 9 years ago( it`s a lovely feeling knowing you own your home) but the rent on these places alone is £790 a month for a self contained 1 bed flat near the sea so your costs are ace. Especially as your home is also detached with countryside views if you wish it. I`m also a truck driver and it made me laugh whe n you said about people foraging their wood as I recently saw a bloke cutting off branches on the Q.T. in a lay-by to heat his home(gotta do what you gotta do). Would it pay you guys to get a lilo or little Dingy to put your bags of shopping in during the floods???

how about the boat maintenance costs split by month, e.g. engine and other servicing, replacement batteries, painting, blacking, annual safety certificate etc.?

Really beats cost ofliving in house or apartment just the rent here and we live just outside of New York is more than triple your boat costs then utilities etc auto it’s a pity we don’t have as many canals as Britain l would be looking for a boat another great visit with you both as always 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Wooow you guys doing great including the fact that you guys have a loan and every other cost… so technically you pay for a room in a shared house in London. My room in Seven Sisters was £800 and I would share with the owner. I is had my own shower outside my room.. Living in a boat is amazing tho. I miss that underwear heating but the costs are so low on my end.

I gotta say, whod have the responcibility of a house these days. We live mobile. We have a 10 meter American caravan. We've done the big tour of New Zealand. Now just potter. An hours drive, stay put for a couple of months, move on. We're retired.

So this is more to you guys in general, rather than this video specifically. I'm an Industrial Design student (AKA Product Design) at the University of Houston in the US and have followed you guys for a while. For a college project I'm designing a product for mobile living (So narrowboats, van life people, RVs, etc) and was curious if I could talk to you guys and ask some questions in detail about everyday life to see if there is something I can design! Just let me know if you guys want to talk and we can figure out a way to get in better contact! ✌️

Remember...It is very dangerous to wade through fast flood water!!! You never know what might be in your way, and there is a danger of open manholes too!! Sty safe and happy! From John

Thanks for the real numbers, totally appreciate that work. And... thanks for breaking down the costs according to what decisions you make about what you want out of your boat life. Building in that flex makes it easier to understand the decisions you make. [Side note : For yhe internet cost here Canada, its insanely high, around $175 for a phone/internet bundle, which majes it somewhat tough to add further patreon but, that can always be done. For router, we say r-ow-ter, so it doesn't get confused with r-oo-ter, like roto-rooter which is a landscaping machine to pull out plant roots (sorry for dullness)]. Just a heads-up
