How Mental Challenges Can Alter an NBA Career

And used it for his family as well. Once again THATS HOW HE DIED, for accommodating to his work ethic. Idgaf about what everyone else was saying bc they were opinions. THE FACT IS that no one has moved the same way, therefore makes his ethic unrivaled. If you have such a problem with that then make a video of your own since I’m sure a lot of your ilk would flock to hear that bullshit. That’s true, irrational confidence is something that all players have. You need that to play in the league, but once you start doubting that or your mental is messed up, it’ll throw your whole game off.

I got cut during tryouts my freshman year because of my mental not being right. Was going through stuff at home and i felt basketball was my only outlet so i needed it more than anything. Put tons of pressure on myself to perform well. So i decided to play not to make a mistake. Wouldnt shoot anything unless i was 15ft and in, with no defenders in sight. Would play hot potato with the ball even though i was supposed to be trying out for point guard, couldnt break the press for anything and i was faster than everyone else except 2 or 3 guys. That play where ben simmons passed up that layup, that was me for 3 days in those tryouts. The kicker is 95% of the guys trying out were guys who played pick up every friday after school and i would destroy em. The moment some actual stakes were put on my basketball skills, i crumbled. Probably my deepest regret in life is not going all out. Mentally psyching yourself out is the worst. I made the team the nexy year but the damage was already done.

I've said this in comments about other NBA shows, but because this is the internet and nobody is here to tell me to shut the hell up, I'll say it again. Content like this, totally unscripted, with actual players, speaking with their real voices, amongst their friends and peers, is just so much better than the crap you get from so-called journalists. Even when I don't agree with something they say, I have so much respect for the men saying it. Everything they say reveals a depth of experience and knowledge. It's like listening in as amazing musicians talk about their craft or hearing high-end professional tradesmen discuss the best way to do a job, or renowned scientists debate theories in their own words. I might not understand everything they say, but I come away knowing a little bit more than I did before, and I get to feel like I've been allowed to see them as they see themselves, not as a team or an organization wants me to see them. Hell, maybe it's all bs and I'm naive for thinking otherwise. All I know is I don't ever need to hear Stephen A Smith or Skip Bayless talk again as long as stuff like this is available.

The russ thing is a bad example. I remember those games, lakers fans were definitely excited to have him there they started booing him after he repeatedly turned the ball over at the worst times, got cooked on defensive matchups, missed wide open layups and so on. Russ probably had to come to terms with "my style of playing basketball is not conducive to winning" and honestly if he himself is at peace with that, then thats all that matters

I had a weird mental struggle from middle school up to junior varsity. I was always one of the best players on my team and a starter for as long as I have played. I was a 6'4 pass-first point guard who rarely looked to score and I would average around 4-8 points a game with an extremely high efficiency as I would only look to score when it was free. I had a lethal jumpshot and was always one of the best shooters on my team in practice, but come game-time it was impossible to get me to shoot the ball. My success came in my effort and excelling in every other area of the game as I simply could not get myself to try to score the ball. I was like prime Russell Westbrook but without the shot attempts. I would go into games with a scorers mindset and it would not translate in actual play. I never really got over it and fell out of love with the game, where I quit after my sophomore year. I still can't figure out why I am like this and continue to play this way outside of competitive play.

@@controversialmann5345 6MOY? I’m glad he’s had some bounce back games this season, but No way was ever in the actual conversation for that award. Was Russ the reason for the Lakers issues? No. Was Russ able to really help the lakers? No. Russ had some good games coming off the bench, but its was never consistent. More to the point Russ’s weaknesses are getting exposed more and more cause his athleticism is falling off.

I understand Russ played like shit. But it’s a difference between playing bad but still giving 100% effort and quitting on your team. Ben Simmons literally quit on philly. He deserved everything that came after that. Russ is not someone who will quit on his team. No matter what the score is, how bad he’s shooting, the boos, the slander, etc. Despite everything Russ never folded and that’s what I love about him. He should never be compared to Ben Simmons.
