@@dionsmith3427 what do you want the coach to do, he shooting the shots? i’m confused on what y’all wanted them to do after they stop shooting. miami was playing zone. sending everything to the rim. jayson tatum hurt his ankle the first play of the game, so the only player who had an inbetween game to split the zone up was being a decoy the rest of the night. Derrick white winning you the game? jaylen brown was playing like a hoe. miami was sending everything to the rim, and bam was blocking all that shit. so what do they really do? when good shooters are missing good shots? derrick white and jaylen brown and marcus smart are bostons shooters, you tell them keep shooting ( obv at some point we say get one at the rim but like i said, bam is paint clogging in the zone) so all of you know better than nba coaches, give me the answer? what would y’all have joe mazzulla do? Jaylen brown couldn’t drive into the zone cause he could not go left. They shaded him the whole night cause the ball was going to be in his hands because like i said, JT was hurt. JT can’t be a playmaker for you. They were out of options. Y’all are literally just talking about nothing, and putting the blame on the coach for jaylen brown not being able to attack the defense. Boston should have stopped shooting yes, okay but then do what? They tried to do that, and jaylen brown had 10 turnovers.

@@roverjohnson6854 true - but the playoffs are a different beast. Defense ramps up in the post season. When you’re making 7 for 35 or 9 for 42, you have to switch it up. A game plan to just shoot “lights out” will not win you games against a team that can put up equal offense AND a good defense. 42 attempts is insanely high for one game. At some point, as a professional player you have to get those 3 points the old-fashioned way…and save for Derrick White, Williams and Tatum - the rest of that crew really struggled to move away from the perimeter.

If you break down the defense and generate a lot of great looks from three, then go ahead and keep shooting. But so many analytics-based approaches assume that bricking threes is a matter of variance and if you shoot enough they'll start going in. That's why we get these embarrassing game 7 stats of teams missing 30+ three point attempts. It's like they forget that shooting from distance is a skill-based performance and some days your team collectively doesn't have it because of things like fatigue or nerves.

The game hasn’t had an adjustment to have a great risk/reward balance. It’s like jump attacks when playing a fighting game. Jump attacks are usually the best attacks/combo starters but most players have devastating anti air counters… So you can’t jump attack all game against experienced players or you’ll get punished repeatedly. In other words it works great when it works but when it doesn’t you’re screwed. The answer is to have a steady diet of high percentage attacks while peppering in higher reward attacks(3s) sparingly.

Only the Golden State Warriors won with that style of play. Even the way the Spurs played they shot threes, but the offense still initiated in the post. You had Duncan in the post, Kawhi mid range and drive. Parker wasn’t a great 3pt shooter his entire career. Then you add the slashing Gnobli, and a host of role players who played their roles perfectly. I am glad to see Jokic lead the Nuggets. I sincerely hope they go on to be the next dynasty. Agree with that. He is a guy who is too in his own head -- or the coaches are too in his head -- about analytics. He hasn't actually been a good mid-range shooter so I kind of get excising those shots, but there is value in simply using that part of the court because it changes defensive coverages. And in the playoffs having a slightly more inelastic offense with less variability is necessary and, specifically in his case, having something you can get to on demand is key. He lets teams off the hook because you just load up to take away the drive and he'll take a contested three.

Players are actually less skilled today than back in the day, players are more athletic today and people often confuse that with skill. players are long, quick and able to jump high, but can't even execute a basic post move against a smaller defender. This means you have tons of average to below average shooters chucking mire 3s than prime ray allen. I'm talking Terry Rozier taking 8 per game at 32%. Vanvleet taking over 9 at 34%. That's insane. And it's even worse when you consider that most of the increase in 3 pt shots is from guys taking low percentage step back, contested, or super deep 3s. Bur because Steph hits a few step backs from the logo at 45% that must mean its an efficient shot.

Doesn't literally anybody notice that this happens almost everywhere at the highest level? When someone elite does something, others follow. When the Warriors smoked the league and won their title, that's when the league saw it and was like, "This is the new benchmark". You CANNOT play 70's-80's ball today. You'll get RAN off the court. You have to emulate and hone in on what they miss, rinse and repeat. This is like video game speedrunning. Everybody's gunning for the same goal, doing the same thing, just trying it faster. Then, when somebody else discovers a better way, everybody else follows suit. Rinse, and repeat. I find no fault, because it seems like just NOW we're noticing basic human patterns and history? Football, basketball, baseball, darts, swimming, cornhole, volleyball, chess, monopoly, etc. It happens EVERYWHERE all the time. Do you believe in Darwin's theory of evolution? Then you should have a confirmation bias with this phenomenon. Humans follow the most successful humans' blueprint. Simple. This will be the thing until another player or team comes along and changes things up.

Right but when the Bulls won the championship, not all of the teams in the league force fed their two guard midrange jumpers from the post. They understood that they had a different team and they needed to use what they had available to them to win. The Rockets surrounded Hakeem with shooters. The Jazz pick and rolled you to death. The Knicks kicked your ass. The Pacers ran Reggie through a forest of screens. Until fairly recently, every single team in this era played the same way, like they all had the same players on their team, instead of using the players they had available to them. It’s not a case or evolution. It’s a case of coaching. Coaching has been terrible and the league is to blame. Who in their right mind would go against the grain when you could be fired tomorrow for not playing like everyone else or upsetting your star player so much that he requests a trade?

@@Ezekial2517But when you have two bigs in the lineup vs the Warriors, you'll lose bar none. It forces other teams to get 3 and D guys who can hopefully keep the shooting down on the Warriors' guards, and then in turn get open 3's on the other end to keep up worh their efficient scoring. The Harden Rockets had a good setup with using the 7 ft center (Capela) as a PNR guy and then run downhill to get a possible lob or pass. The PNR sets up the ball-handler, big man, and one other wing automatically by default, so you have almost every option available at once. The PNR-one-big-man style seemed to be ideal. You're not gonna beat the Warriors at that time unless you played like them and then exploited their weaknesses. If you have 2 bigs who played the post, on the offensive end, a possible 2 isn't as efficient as a possible 3. 3's overcome 2's quickly, and then you need smaller forwards to keep up, especially in transition. Sure, they'll need a big to match the other bigs, but that becomes negligible when it's raining 3's and 2's won't cut it.

But then Kawhi’s midrange game put him on top. Then Giannis won a championship. GSW had to show defensive chops on top of a fraction of the scoring power they used to have. Jokic and Butler - not exactly shooters - are in the finals. The league is adapting and changing. The league will be fine.

In the playoffs those twos hit different and maximize every possession oppose to someone who’s letting them fly with 18 seconds left on the shot clock

8:42 he knows what he's talking about. I watched him in quite a few games, and he was small for a big, but he really played bigger than he was. I do miss the inside-first style of play, but I think some balance is finally returning to the game. Everyone saw Denver's third or fourth option Cooper just walk over smaller defenders as if they weren't there. It looked like a joke. Other teams have to build lineups that can respond to that, right?

They’re not lying I want to play ball over the summer and we was playing young fellow, and I think his sister 5v5 pick up game every time I drove to the lane he called ball. I asked why we don’t drive to the range threes only I walked off the court.

K Mart speaking facts 💯. But it’s less physical to shoot 3’s and that’s the way they’re pushing the game. Very unfortunate. Also big men aren’t really healthy guards last longer.

They all had great points on this one, but I wanted to add something… if you have a team using the strategy to shoot nothing but threes, exactly what is your team going to do against another squad that’s good at defense??? Once they put pressure on your shot attempts, it’s over wit if you keep missing… and these owners and coaches don’t seem to care about the fact that the way professional athletes got good at shooting outside buckets is due to their shooting starting from close range and then once they master the midrange, then they step out the three to then master that… 90% of players can’t even shoot off the hip while under pressure from 25 to 30 feet out and you want to your team to shoot at Will every night as a strategy???? It’s like they’re giving the Warriors a chance to win a couple more rings

A good 3 pt shooter shooting 40% is worth 1.2 pt per shot attempt. A good mid range shooter makes like 50% and it’s only worth 1pt per attempt. Just math. Unless other things come like spacing or you can make 60% from midrange, there’s no point in shooting it.

Also I think coaching staffs in the NBA should adapt the style of coaching that the NFL has where maybe your head coach is defensive or offensive and your ass head coach is the other Out side of being motivational coach I think most teams would benefit from having A staff that can potentially develop a big if you get one can score a wing or a guard By having a staff dedicated to the development of all positions and an offensive style I think you could improve the IQ of the players a lot faster

The lakers first half of the season showed me you need 3s in this league when we kept losing games because we couldn’t shoot we couldnt make comebacks cause we couldn’t shoot
