Positive Lightning is wild the thunder is what gets me excited

“Bolts from the blue” can be positive or negative. The negative type tends to come from top region of a new tower growing very close to a more mature complex. The positive type will come out of the high-altitude thin/forward portion of the anvil. They are rare. They have a characteristic dynamite or gunshot sound because all the branching is very high in the cloud and thus isn’t heard until well after the initial shock of the ground strike. They are also very smooth with no branching at all near the ground. They can also come straight out of the base of some supercells, often in the same region where negative strikes are also occurring. The majority of positive strikes occur under light precipitation in the zone of thick nimbostratus clouds several km away from the core updrafts of a storm. They originate from a lower altitude, usually somewhere near the melting level. The positive charge originally at the very top of the storm sinks with the falling frozen precipitation. Most flashes are horizontal, but ground strikes start to happen where the positive charge has sunk to somewhere close to the melting level. These strikes are usually accompanied by long rumbles due to extensive horizontal roots aloft.
