What Happens When You're Struck By Lightning? | The Human Body

Ғылым және технология

Getting stuck by lightning is rough. It can burn hotter than the sun, scar your body, and even blow off your clothes. Even worse, it kills about 47 Americans per year. Although 90% of those struck survive, it's still worth knowing how to avoid getting a heavy dose of sky electricity.
Following is the transcript of the video:
Contrary to popular belief, lightning strikes aren’t always a death sentence. In fact, about 90 percent of people in the US who are struck actually survive.
Still, victims rarely walk away unscathed, and the damage can be permanent.
Lightning triggers 75,000 forest fires in the US each year and can split entire trees down the middle in a split second.
So it’s frightening to imagine what it does inside a human body.
The good news is that you won’t get cooked Wile E Coyote-style, but it can still do damage.
For starters, lightning carries between 1 to 10 billion joules of energy - enough to power a 100-watt bulb for at least 3 months. When that amount of electricity enters your body, it short-circuits the small electrical signals that run your heart, lungs, and nervous system.
This can lead to cardiac arrest, seizures, brain injury, spinal cord damage, and even amnesia.
But electricity isn’t your only problem. Lightning is blisteringly hot. In under a second, it can heat the surrounding air to temperatures 5X hotter than the sun’s surface.
This causes a rapid expansion of air, which leads to a shock wave that we hear as thunder.
It has been calculated that someone standing within 30 feet of a lightning strike point can experience a blast wave equivalent to a 5kg TNT bomb (Blumenthal).
The intense heat, light, and electricity can also damage your eyes. In fact, it can bore holes in your retina and can cause cataracts within days or weeks.
Other side-effects of lightning can include impotence in men and overall decreased libido. That’s just what happens on the inside!
As the lightning moves toward the surface, it can force red blood cells out of your capillaries, into your epidermis….like a bruise. These intricate designs are called Lichtenberg figures.
The intense temperatures can also heat up any metal you might be wearing, causing third-degree burns and can also rapidly vaporize the rainwater or sweat on your skin. The resulting steam explosion may blow off your clothes and shoes leaving you nearly naked!
On average 47 people in the US are killed by lightning each year. So, you might be wondering, “How do I make sure I’m not that guy?”
For starters, check weather forecasts ahead of time, and stay indoors during a storm. But if you’re stuck outside, avoid isolated trees, poles, and open fields, and run as fast as you can towards safety.
You’re best off in a developed building or a hard-topped metal vehicle. So stay calm and just remember: “When thunder roars go indoors!”

This video explains what happened to me when I was hit by lightening. I was stood just inside an open fronted farm building in the UK holding a large 5 foot long crowbar in a heavy thunderstorm. The lightening hit me through the open side of the building but earthed through the crowbar that was luckily touching the floor. I remember the explosion and being thrown across the building and waking up slumped against a wall with my head bleeding and the crowbar about 20 feet away. This video explains the explosion and why I went unconscious for some time. I was unharmed on the day but have been basically unwell for a large part of my life with autoimmune problems. It makes me wonder if that had any causative effect.

I'm absolutely terrified of thunder and lightning and it gives me really bad anxiety mainly being caught in one and getting strucked by lightning. It's so bad for me that I will constantly check the weather many times a day for any bad weather and I feel anxious the whole day preparing for it come. Even when it's just heavy rain or I see it in the distance I will have a bad panic attack terrified of getting hit at any moment even when I'm trying to get indoors as fast as I can. I will never understand how people don't take it seriously, yes it's rare but it's still dangerous and you should still be careful. My own family thinks I'm crazy whenever i have a panic attack over thunderstorms and they think it's not dangerous when it literally is.

I’m literally the opposite of you, I love thunderstorms too much for my own good. I take walks in the rain while there’s a thunderstorm for a bit just because of the petrichor smell and how pretty the lightning looks going across the sky. It’s a short walk though because obviously it isn’t safe, like 20-30 minutes. It’s a guilty pleasure, I know I shouldn’t do it but I can’t help it.

I used to hold such a fear, but I recently got over it. Then got to witness the result of what happens when a direct hit strikes a living being. I learned that all these lightning strike videos are false. Nobody survives a direct hit. They just explode. But at least it's quick... and fairly rare... cows seem to suffer a lot from it, but hot damn that's a little brutal, but at least nobody would feel a thing since it happens instantaneously.

I got shocked by lightning about 3 weeks ago, it hit a tree about 10 ft away and traveled thru the wet ground and up thru my barefeet. Felt like my heart was going to explode. My 4yo was on my lap and said she felt the buzz too (I was sitting on the bottom step with my feet on the ground) . It felt like I was leaning on a hot pole. There was a lightning ball right above us. I could feel my necklace and earrings lift. Only side effect I had was having a seizure the next night while watching the avalanche scene on call of the wild (and synged half my eyebrow off). Now each time it storms I feel all buzzy (like electrical buzzing) . Scary as hell. I was trying to get my 4yo inside as I was waiting to spontaneously combust 👁️👄👁️

You forgot to mention that if you're unable to make it indoors in time, your best way to minimize damage of a lightning strike is to assume a squatting position with your feet together (not near a tree). It’s a different story if the storm changes polarity and you’re hit by a bolt carrying a positive charge.Theyre a lot stronger, louder, and can travel a good distance away from the storm. Luckily, positive charged lightning isn’t very common, and it mostly occurs in supercell storms before it produces a tornado.

My two cousins, brother and I were playing in the rain many years ago and lightning struck a tree in the back yard near us. e were running in the direction towards the tree when it happened. I was a bit behind the three of them but they all stopped and asked if i felt something brush across me. I hadn't noticed anything but we definitely got struck by some of the lightning branching off of the initial bolt. We went inside a few minutes after because everyone was shook and almost immediately all of our heads, eyes and ears started hurting and our ears were ringing. Even still i'm extremely fascinated by such a beautiful creation of God. Nothing is more mesmerizing than watching nature dance to the tune of thunder with such beautiful strides.

@@boobiesexmachine air is a poor conductor of electricity andl lightning strikes vary considerably in intensity. If it flows through some kind of resistor, like air in your body, some of the electrical energy is converted to heat. But heat is not the same as temperature: it takes a while for something to warm up. So as long as the current flows through your body for a short amount of time, you should be okay. Many lightning victims are not hit directly, but instead suffer from secondary effects of a nearby strike. You're more likely to survive a lower-energy strike, but if you are struck by a powerful bolt, you basically have no chance of survival.

Can confirm about the shockwave at 30 feet. I was in my barracks room in the military during a heavy thunderstorm. there was a tree right outside and since there was an overhang outside my door, I often had the door open during storms. The bolt struck the tree outside, knocked me from my chair and my laptop off the desk, cracked the window, and I was blinded and deafened for a solid 30 seconds. I was unharmed otherwise thankfully, but I just remember it as being pretty damn cool. Thankfully my laptop survived.

Last night I was getting ready to take the garbage down to the road because the garbage trucks run tomorrow, as I was walking down my driveway a huge lightning strike struck the ground right in front of my eyes and I would say was only about 10 ft away from me, all I saw was bright white as if I was blind but instead of seeing all black it was all white! and heard a big loud bang it sounded like a bomb went off! And it was also very windy after that happened to me in the area. I literally dropped everything that was in my hand and ran back into the house and my mom was getting to run outside because she heard me screaming from outside I ran in a hugged my mom and just starting crying in front of her telling her what happened and she said she heard everything it was sooo loud! It was so traumatizing to me just knowing that I was just potentially 10 ft away from losing my life last night 😰

I was riding a bike near a golf course with orchard, I got caught by a thunderstorm and I saw lightning rods on the side and front, about 200 meters away, I got so scared that I might get hit, and then I looked up the sky and saw what appeared to be an umbrella of electrical pulses, like branches of a tree. Fortunately the lightnings did not hit me, kind of 5 meters above my head, but I got to say, that was both beautiful and awesome and scary all at the same time.

Yes, changes in personality, difficulties focusing, motor problems ... Lightnings physically grill the brain, vaporising liquid in it, if you get hit in the wrong place, so pretty much anything that can happen from a brain haemorrhage can happen from a lightning strike too. Lightnings are not a thing to trifle with.

I live in Greece to be exact I live on crete, anyway there was a thunderstorm about a month ago, lightnings were hitting so close to me and my friends that I was sure I'd get hit by one, we were under a balcony near the city port with our motorcycles, well you see I have a phobia of lightnings making it hard for me to stay calm while all of that was happening, I managed to stay calm and started pushing my motorcycle instead of riding it to my friends house witch wasn't clove by, anyway for all I know is that I won't get out that much this winter 😅

I always thought cars were safe in a storm, but that isn’t always the case. Last summer it began storming while I was surfing in nj. Got to the car and had one hand on the inside of the trunk. Huge white flash happens and I feel my whole arm and chest shock real hot. I relaxed for a bit and enjoyed an ice cream. I even surfed again when the storm passed. But the car seemed to act as a conductor. Not only that, the car DIED in the middle of the highway on the ride home. Hyundai Elantra 2017, computer shut, breaks cut out and so did the gas. Thankfully we made it to the should safely using the E brake. THE CAR AINT AS SAFE AS YOU THINK.

Well.. just a small tip: you can't run from a lightning which already chose it's next victim. Standing outside, in an unprotected environment doesn't matter what you are carrying, where or on what you are standing, or where you find yourself at a sea base level, your chances of being struck are equal and should worry you. Being outside is always a bad spot, no matter where you are finding yourself, whether you have your cellphone at you or anything you can think of. The best bet you have is to always be prepared and never adventure outside while a storm is nearby.

Got nailed by lightning, and it was very painful. I drew 3 foot bright white sparks to my camper, and it blew out the soles of my dilapidated shoes. Caused some muscle and joint pain as well as weakness on my left side. The reaction is literal shock and disbelief more than pain initially. The pain hits a few minutes later, and peaks in a few hours, and lasts a few days.

The other week I had to cycle 5 miles in a lightening storm back home through the woods, streets, and bridleways, it was raining that hard within 5 minutes I looked like i'd jumped in a pool fully clothed! Saw lightening strike about quarter mile in front of me on a long trail and had no option but to continue towards the lightening, if I had gotten struck I would have been fried, lucky I got back alive really.

My family I and I got stuck on a river when floating..we checked the forecast and it was suppose to be sunny.. a storm developed overhead very quickly..In an instant the wind picked up and we knew it was time to get out. Then, the clouds moved in and it started to rain..then we heard the tornado siren going off.....all whilst in a gosh darn river! Luckily we were near a park and ran to a pavilion..we had to get out of the water due to all the lightning. There were tons of us on the river that day. We got lucky

We are dealing with major PTSD and anxiety symptoms and aren't sleeping well or anywhere close to the amount before we were struck and no one will treat or listen and we are suffering horribly ... I don't know what more we expected from small town Maine but my God this is horrifying ...
