One time I actually held my bladder for 9 hours straight. We were on a really long car trip and it just made the trip a lot short with less rest stops. I didn’t know back then that this was a bad thing to do. At least as so as we got home, everyone got out of my way as I ran for the bathroom 😂

Holding it once or twice isn't bad thing. The bladder is free to stretch and contract but doing it for long can cause the gateway to stretch which is voluntary muscles tissue. That's the only part you can lose control over it. As for kidney failure stuff you gotta have other disease for this to happen

I did the same when I was 18 on a trip coming home from camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains back to Los Angeles. I knew it was going to be a doozy so I recorded it on audio cassette and timed it. It was a 4 minute and 21 second solid stream, plus about 2 extra minutes of squirting out small bits. I recorded it because my friends would have never believed the story nor thought that I could do a longer piss than from "The Naked Gun" and Adam Sandler's skit "The Longest Pee" ("They're All Gonna Laugh At You," 1993), which were both about 1 minute long. At the end, I said, "I feel relieved." I turned on the radio and it was the theme song to Sesame Street on the hip hop station. I said, "What the hell is going on here?" - Biff Tannen, Back To The Future 2.

I remember once holding my pee for 4 hours after drinking over a liter and a half of water beforehand. I don’t know why I haven’t just stopped at a gas station or something but I insisted on making it home. My bladder felt like it was about to explode for a solid 30 minutes and any small movement of my body made it hurt like hell. But the worst part was when I had finally made it home and tried to get out of the car to go to the bathroom. I’ve spent 15 minutes to walk from my car to the bathroom. I couldn’t stand up right from the pain. Needless to say it was the longest peeing session of my life and the relief I felt was unmatched by anything else. That day I was really worried that my bladder would actually pop. I will never allow my self to reach that stage again.

Update: (I have left this comment under one of your KZread shorts!) I have a stretched bladder. I didn't learn about this until 7th grade (now in 9th grade) although I have been doing this for now five years. As a victim, I am just here to tell others that it can be very painful when you have been doing it for maybe two years (I started at 10, but it left me with the most pain I ever felt at 12, even though I have never been pregnant before I would describe it as labor. That is how painful it was for me.) Now almost 15, I got into the habit of actually going when I feel like I have to. I initially started doing it out of pleasure (yes, you read that correctly.) and then it later got out of control. This is why teaching important things about our bodies at a young age is so vital. I didn't learn about any of this until I was 13-14 years old. I now have a very sensitive stretched bladder but fortunately it is not too late to get better. :) although irreversible, I can help myself before I kill myself with the amount of germs in my organs (it can kill you slowly over time, just to note.) This goes out to whoever may need this. Please protect your organs and God bless.

Oh yeah, I've read how often nurses end up holding their pee a lot during their shifts, to the point where "nurse's bladder" is an actual term some people use. What's the longest time you remember holding it, if you don't mind me asking?

Damn, I've always thought it was the opposite. I thought your sphincter muscles were a "use it or lose it" thing, where you had to keep them active and practice holding it to get the muscle stronger, and if you just go right away every time you even kinda have to, you'd end up incontinent because your sphincter isn't getting enough exercise at holding it. I remember hearing an anecdote from someone that they spent years working on a farm, where they would just pee wherever anytime they had to go and would never hold it... and said that a result he lost his ability to hold it, and every time he has to pee now, it's an emergency. That made a lot of sense to me, as muscles need exercise and use to stay strong, or they atrophy. Now this tells me the opposite. I feel like if I trust it, I'll be told it's better to hold it years from now, when I'm incontinent.

It's probably a bit of both. I'm not sure if it'd be due to the muscles themselves or simply the side effects of habits, but I'm sure that if you always peed immediately and never got used to holding in your pee, it would have that effect. The important thing in life is to never go overboard with anything. Just listen to what your body tells you (as we evolved to do) and adjust for any known underlying medical conditions

I think you are correct; the stronger we are able to control our bladder muscles the better we are in. Avoid drinking too much caffeine; proper hygiene , especially female, etc

The bladder is not like a rigid container filling up like a tank, as shown in the animation. It is an elastic bag which shrinks or expands, and never contains air above the liquid.

You can end up having kidney failure on needing dialysis. When my mother was at the hospital I talked to a dialysis patient who told me that he did not like going to the bathroom unless it was his own and use to hold it all the time. He started to develop problems and was on dialysis now.

I told my teacher this and I got detention..

Fun fact: schools are legally required to let you go to the bathroom if you need to. They cannot control whether or not you can go. You have the right to use the bathroom, and you can literally walk out if you really need to. (Bathroom access is also a human right according to the 2015 UN General Assembly) Edit: I'm not suggesting you should just get up and leave whenever you want, you should always be courteous and try to work things out with the teacher if you need some form of special accommodation, I'm just saying if there's a sudden emergency then you shouldn't feel compelled to put your health at risk just for this

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. I've known a few people that hold their pee because they'd rather not use dirty bathrooms. me too .i holded for too long for 3 hrs and suffered with uti and bladder distension ,it happened 6 years ago, still iam facing bladder urinary contingency, its annoying getting knee pains for frequent visiting toilets and wasting lot of time in my office. my employees are getting annoyed too, i told them the problem. they go to toilets every 6 -7 hrs which is normal, where as i go to toilet every 1 hr or sometimes 3 hrs .i fear of urine stones ,so i drinks lots of water too. actually i developed ptsd after uti.because i had holded my urine voluntarily for 3 hrs due to fear of my strict lecturer and social phobia .my dad scolded me there's something wrong psycology in my brain due that i developed fear.

Me too I actually peed myself when I had a urinary tract infection, it was bad I even peed myself from holding it too long and sometimes first thing in the morning, I don’t make it, so I just pee in my pull up I can’t hold it at night which is why I wear pull-ups. I have several palsy which makes it incredibly difficult for me to hold it at night and I don’t physically feel when I have to urinate until it’s too late.

All of a sudden everyone is a bladder expert.

I have been holding in my pee since I was a really young because the potty training Elmo toilet traumatized my little self so I avoided using the bathroom. Even after learning how to use a regular toilet I still hold it in. I don’t even think about it now, I just do it. However holding in my pee for the majority of my life has affected me a lot. Lately I have had small accidents where I sneeze and my bladder lets go a bit and pee comes out. Luckily I have been in my house when these accidents happened but now that it’s happening more often I’m scared to have an accident when I’m outside….I’m less the 16 years old

As a kid who holds in my pee a lot, I found this helping and will try not to hold it in too much now 😊❤

That explains a lot. I literally don't know if I need to go to the bathroom until I begin to feel pain in my bladder, so that is probably why. 19 btw, don't do this to yourself if you can help it.

“Surgical bladder” is a thing. We can’t just dash out whenever we want so we hold it for long periods. Sometimes up to 10 or 12 hours depending upon the surgical procedure. Speaking of surgery please don’t hold your urine for long periods on road trips because guess what ruptures first during an accident if you do? You got it and it’s because the seatbelt is usually placed right over the top.

Yeah, it's true. Everyone feels the urge to pee every day. But sometimes there are situations where we can't go to the toilet when we need to, if we are sitting in a vehicle or busy with work, or when your teacher doesn't let you go to the toilet. Sometimes we don't just get up and go whenever we feel like. It is okay to hold your pee, but not for so long that it can cause problems like urinary tract infection or kidney damage. If you need to hold your pee, then just make sure not to drink a lot of water. And also do not drink alcohol because alcohol produces even more urine than water does.

In school, they do not allow us to go to the bathroom. They only allow it sometimes. Actually, when the students say that they want to go to the bathroom, they don't go to the bathroom, they go out to chat with people and waste time. That's why teachers don't allow us to go. They let us go only when it's very urgent. This is a problem, because it's not good to hold your urine. You might get a UTI or kidney damage.

Don’t know why does this appeared in my recommendation but this is good information, regardless

I'm a teacher and I let my students go to the toilet unless there's 5 minutes left. When I was a trainee, I had that trauma where there were 10 minutes left, so I said no. 2 minutes before it rang, she bursted in tears while peeing herself. Never saw so much pee in one sitting, her classmates told me she held it all day because she really doesn't like to go to the toilet at school. Please be understanding. I was a trainee, it was my first year + no experience with kids before. And we were told that usually they could wait. You hear everything and anything during that training year. Fortunately, it was a good middle school, and the classmates were super supportive.

Useful information.

A boy actually got hospitalized in the primary wing of my school due to kidney failure because he holded his pee for too long (he and few other boys were having a competition on who holds their pee for the longest time)(stupid)

I know not all teachers make the rules but I’m just saying it’s a ridiculous rule and in my school you only get one chance to go to the bathroom in 7 hours!! Absolutely, an old classmate destroyed his bladder because he refused to go to the toilet at school for years (the floor was constantly flooded with urine, kids shat in every surface inside including walls, toilet lids and upper deckers, the same kids that did all that would hand out in there all morning, etc).

I have a bathroom-associated social anxiety due to a dangerous, trsumatic experience that I had in a bathroom. When there are people nearby my body automatically goes into fight or flight mode and I am totally unable to relax my urinal sphincter. Imagine what kind of suffering it is to have this issue every time you go to pee. I have worked on it and has improved significantly over the years but I believe its so important to make this known, to let the world know about this issue. It is very common but people who suffer from this, suffer in secret because of shame

Well, yeah that's true. There are situations where we can't go to the toilet and need to hold it. We usually hold our pee while sitting in a vehicle. I think most people stop their vehicle and go to the toilet and then come back. Sometimes we are busy with work so we don't have time to go to the toilet, that happens.

@@mrsugar7528 I used to hold poop for 7 days. Don't ask me how that is possible. I still don't know. One time the poop was too hard and occasionally blood will come but never got anything serious. I'm glad that I don't have to do any surgeries or go to the hospital. Poop not coming out is the worst feeling ever. You pray to god use as much force as possible and not too much because you are scared that you will let out blood.

Bladder infections are also not fun. Especially when you develop "bladder crystals" that get stuck halfway down your urethra until the next time you have to go and so you're just waiting for the next time you have to pee just to push it out despite the pain that causes and hoping another doesn't get stuck behind the first one.

Because I was too lazy to use the toilet, I held it too often and it lead to bladder retention issues in high school and I even did potty schedules to keep my bladder empty because teachers wouldn't let you use the bathroom unless you had a pass. But you only got 3 passes per quarter. So I went between classes and then I had a sensitive bladder where I felt I had to go all the time. Drinking lots of water would trigger me to go a lot. I even tried bladder training and I gave up.Then after having two kids, I deal with bladder leakage off and on and pelvic floor muscles dysfunction. I have also gotten bladder spasms as well. I do use diapers.

Years ago I was hospitalized because I was exhibiting symptoms of MS and my bladder stopped functioning. I had to wear a catheter and walked around with a big o’l bag of pee strapped to my leg. During my recovery I remember being in the hospital bathroom with my mom and attempted peeing - hearing that beautiful trickling sound sent both of us into tears of relief and happiness. Moral of the story, never take peeing for granted.

I got knee surgery and I couldn’t pee because of the effects of surgery and all the medication. So I also had to catheter and I did not like it lol. That first time your able to pee normally is the best feeling in the world. Like all your stress and worries go away and your morale just jumps from 0 to 1000

Interesting! In some radiation treatments for prostate cancer, the patient is asked to have a full bladder for the daily treatments. Apparently this aids in preventing unintended harm to the bladder during treatments. How many times can you do this before the bladder/kidney could be harmed? Typical treatment might be 40 treatments over an 8 week span.

Surely you can if you want to. Isn't it just a choice? I see teachers leaving the class often for things like retrieving materials they left in the staff room. Anyway, you shouldn't justify other teachers' actions since they don't even know if it's urgent for the student or not. At least the teachers can tell for themselves when it is.

This is why I try to drink as little water as possible before classes even though I end up quite thirsty

I once held my pee for the majority of the two towers, lord of the rings. When the movie finished, and I went to pee, I stood there with a strong stream for close to a minute or more. To this day, I think that has affected my urinary retention. I have to constantly pee maybe 4-6 times in a work day. Maybe more depending how much I drink. Sometimes I’ll feel the urge after peeing 30 minutes ago. Feels uncomfortable if I do t go and relieve myself.
