EXTREMLEY CLOSE LIGHTNING BARRAGE! - We were terrified!
Numerous photogenic and extremely close lightning strikes from a monster tornado warned storm.
The lightning was so intense and frequent, it made it impossible to safely film the storm from outside our vehicles, it felt like we could be struck by lightning at any moment! The thunder was deafening and all of my hairs were standing on end. It was one of the more terrifying experiences I've had while storm chasing.
Most of these chases would not be possible without the help of my friend Chris, please go check out his channel if you have not done so already. You'll be in for quite the show!

Pretty sure that's actually wise. You want the car to form a completely unbroken surface around you in order to create a Faraday cage. If your vehicle is struck the lightning will, hopefully, travel over the surface of your car and discharge to the ground, without ever energizing the inside of the vehicle. Would also be wise to put down the camera and take hand off the dash as if the car does become energized, the current will likely leap through electrical components.

I've seen videos of positive lightning barrages with no more than 5 seconds between strikes. One of the people filming such a video remarked that it was going to burn some of the houses down. What these videos had in common was very little rain or wind as the tightly spaced barrage was going on. I wonder if the lack of wind and rain could be a clue as to what causes an area to become that highly energized.

*i have a severe storm phobia, if I hear distant lightning in the slightest I get violently panicked and start to freak out. It’s the noise that freaks me out since I always hated loud noises since I was a kid. I’m going on a wilderness camp all week next week and I’m scared it’s gonna storm. Ironically though, you’re videos really help me, seeing how people like you can be so brave in storms makes me realise that even though they are dangerous, you can still find beauty in them and enjoy them.*

Storm chasing is definitely a bit dangerous but I do it to witness the beauty of these storms, there’s nothing quite like it on Earth. I can definitely understand having a phobia of storms though, they can be and are extremely dangerous sometimes. The lightning barrage in this video absolutely would have killed us if we weren’t inside our cars which acted like faraday cages protecting us from the strong electric fields and the bolts themselves. It’s always important to remember that’s it’s extremely unlikely you will ever suffer any direct harm from storms but it’s not irrational at all to fear them.

That was soooo terribly AWESOME!! YEHAW!!!
There's something both terrifying and mesmerising about lightning strikes. I cannot resist them and will always go out in a storm to watch and photograph - even though it's quite a stupid thing to do (I don't have a car to act as a Faraday cage).
As someone who is mechanically inclined and obsessed with how mankind has bent the laws of nature to our will, there is something so captivating, beautiful, and terrifying about so much unbridled, uncontrollable, raw energy. I love these storms, as much as they terrify me they captivate me and draw me in.
This storm is literally like the summer storms Dayton gets. It’s terrible except two of those strikes was even closer.
When looking for barrages likes this, often they’re cut together, or not really barrages…this is one heck of one! Pretty scary if you’re there!
Amazing Footage ✌️
You remember the HUGE thunderstorm in Chicago in August 2007, This has as many close lightning strikes as that storm
happened to me while fishing outside of Aspen, CO about 30 years ago. I curled up under a washed out bank for about 10 minutes. It actually felt PERSONAL.

Very nice shots and nice audio to match it

Not something I’ve heard before on a video, that buzz prior to the strikes. Good stuff
素晴らしい映像と音声をありがとうございます!観られてよかったです!
Impressive Barrage! As with all supercell thunderstorms with a powerful updraft, getting a barrage of Negative staccatos striking within the updraft is widespread. You practically positioned yourself right underneath the updraft feeding into the mesocyclone (You will always get the most strikes alongside the RFD & slightly on the southern/southeastern flank of the supercell), where the highest intensity is going to be. I've told fellow chasers here in Illinois that if you want to avoid getting bombarded with strikes at close range, position to the west side of the RFD or a few miles west. I can see that you were prepared for a close one at 1:05. Pretty sure at that point, you were feeling the static in the air, and you just knew it was going to happen. 1:32, it happened. Listen closely at that mark before the shockwave reaches you a millisecond. That "Click" is the closest nearby upward streamer emitting from the tallest object on the ground (i.e., telephone pole). It is also that from the EMP charge that gets picked up on cameras and all that. It sends a shockwave that travels no more than 1,000 feet from the base of the strike.
dude this was quite a scary lightning barrage i've seen a lot of youtube videos about lightning
what a nice lightning barrage - and the coolness if he rolls his window up for protection 🤣🤣
Reminds me of the storm that hit Southeast Queensland in November 2012!

@@CeltonHenderson Very interesting. Do you guys ever get derechos with extreme lightning rates? For instance, the derecho/mcs that moved through northern illinois and northwest indiana on August 4 2008. On that day, dew points were in the 80’s, cape values were in excess of 5000 j/kg. Here in Ireland, you’d be lucky to get 5 days of thunderstorms per year. We don’t have as much instability on the European continent as the US. Nevertheless severe thunderstorms do occur especially in the mediterranean during the fall months. The western mediterranean in particular due to strong jet-streaks and a very warm mediterranean sea . CAPE values around 3000 j/kg are common. This phenomenon is known as a mediterranean epesode, and can lead to devastating flash floods and very high lightnning rates. But CAPE values higher than 3000 j/kg are extremely rare in Europe., usually only occuring once every few years. I am also aware that in Florida, the setup in summer is often high instability but very low windshear. I study meteorology in my free time so i’m really interested in atmospheric setups etc. . On very rare occasion’s mesoscale convective systems hit the UK, setup is usually a low pressure system in the bay of biscay and an upper level trough moving into southern UK from France. Although these systems are often elevated.
