When A tornado is in the vicinity, normal people tend to seek shelter. Others try to catch a glimpse of the rare spectacle. For some storm chasers the closer they get, the better. But why would anybody risk everything to witness something so formidable so close? Is it all just for social network boasting and media hype? Is it for science or for money? Is it rooted in pure fascination and curiosity, or just plain stupidity? Over the last couple decades, I’ve had numerous opportunities and incentives to dare up close photography of tornadoes. More than once, I was lucky to escape with my life. In this video we’re going to explore close intercepts with tornadoes, and the driving incentives to cross that line in the wind defining close and too close. These are my top 10 up close tornado encounters caught on camera.

Every few months I go through what I've labeled the "Tornado Phase," where, for some reason, I hyperfixate on all things tornado, and every time I go through this, I ALWAYS come to watch Hank's videos. I get very excited every time it's tornado season because I know he'll be uploading new content, and he never disappoints.

Most chasers are talking to the stream/radio or getting clips to sell to news who don't care about audio. Hank is trying to get the shot for this channel and he likes clean audio. He also chases solo which helps because he isnt worried about a second person or having a second person worried about the pair.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of The Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of The Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.« (Gospel of Matthew - Chapter 1)

The shot of the tornado weaving in and out of the wind turbines is perhaps one of my favorite in this video. Tornadoes are simply awe-inspiring, commanding a respectful fear wherever they go. They can kill easily and it is a travesty when they do, but one cannot deny they are just so intriguing and eye-catching. How would you not want to stop and just stare at or film one? I am not sure if there is any other force or power on earth quite like that. Even other natural disasters like volcanic eruptions or something still feel like they belong on earth. Tornadoes are like some other-worldly thing that visits our planet from time to time to wreak havoc and remind us they are out there, yet no one storm is alike. If this is what we have on earth, just imagine what some of the other planets in the universe have to put up with weather-wise. I've been in tornado-warned storms before, but never had the opportunity to see one clearly with my own eyes. Is it weird that I want to someday?

I thought that too..and I live where there are no tornadoes (rural upstate NY). In 2020 we had an EF1 tornado...that's all it was..it came up the hill over my house and down the road. Maybe a mile or two. EF1 but it was fucking terrifying. It was a wall of grey moving up the hill directly for my little farm house. Shit was flying around outside, trees snapped and a few old pines completely uprooted. We ran around in the house looking out from window to window in complete disbelief😂 I'm laughing now but every storm we get now, my kids are scared and I admit I get freaked out. We get crazy wind as it is. But that day we'll never forget. First summer in our dream home.

On the other hand, the footage brings back bad memories and pain. I know what it’s like to deal with the damage and associated stress.

Back when I was like 12 or 13 (I'm 36 now) my parent's neighborhood got hit by a tornado in an area where tornadoes are not exactly common (30-40 minutes north of Charlotte, NC). Luckily it ended up only being like an F-1, but ho-LEE shit is it scary when you don't know that beforehand and you're watching the funnel cloud coming straight towards you! It passed directly over our house and it really did sound exactly like a freight train... I can't even begin to imagine how much louder a stronger tornado would've been! The craziest part was when we came out of the house, there was so much hail everywhere, it looked like it had snowed or something… That and all of the snakes that were everywhere! I guess the torrential downpour of rain had driven them all up from underground, but there were giant snakes absolutely everywhere. I've never heard anybody else mention this detail as part of their tornado experience so I don't know this was just unique to my situation, but either way it was gross!

And we'd just bought it. I kept saying, "This house has stood here for over 200 years. This storm will fuck off somewhere else!!" I was so angry, I wouldn't go in the bathroom and hide. I was terrified but refused to give up my home. it was absolutely terrifying..I can't imagine a stronger one. Omg. It ripped the roof halfway off the house up the road.😫

Great work Hank! I am always impressed at your ability to maintain your composure and focus in the midst of the maelstrom. Keep up the good work and please continue to balance risk and safety to create these amazing videos that would not exist, if not for YOU.

Hecos Pank is the real people's champion. You can tell he's just a nice genuine dude. Been obsessed with tornadoes since I saw raw footage on VHS when I was a wee lad. 26 years later and I can safely say it's my greatest passion. To have tornado chaser ambassadors like Hank makes me happy to be part of such a great community. Love y'all!

What I like about Pecos Hank is He's always calm never screaming during his chases and he doesn't sensationalize what he sees. There's another weather chaser out there that was trying to tell us In the Buffalo snowstorm, it was a seven foot snowfall yet the snow wasn't even covering cars.. No need to Bs when people can see stuff with their own eyes!

This is one of the most unique tornado chasing videos I've ever seen. You took outstanding footage and you show calm and thrill at the same time when you have close twister encounters. What's more, this video has the Paris, Texas movie vibes and atmosphere. Outstanding work! And the music is perfect in this!

Great footage. KZread subtitles picks up the word tornado as burritos, which I find way too funny
