DAY OF THE TWINS - Tornado terror in Nebraska

Ғылым және технология

The Pilger Twin EF-4 tornadoes, The Wayne County line satellite and birth of the Wakefield EF-4 tornado. Full story w/ radar and commentary. To license HD tornado video contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
THE EVENT: June 16, 2014
Early this afternoon the Storm Prediction Center was monitoring a volatile atmosphere over Nebraska. By 2:34 PM satellite imagery revealed a lone thunderstorm developing in Boone, Platte and Madison counties and By 4PM a large damaging tornado was being reported near the town of Stanton. Base velocity started revealing a second area of powerful rotation within the storm. The Stanton tornado would earn an EF-4 rating before dissipating Near highway 57 and 275.
When I arrived at the scene, another tornado had developed southwest of Pilger, NE and strengthened to EF-4 status while striking the small town killing 2 people and critically injuring around 20 others. During this time a 2nd tornado was developing to the southeast. This tornado would become the eastern twin and would also strengthen to an EF-4.
The tornado that struck Pilger (the western twin) weakened shortly after crossing highway 275 and the condensation funnel completely lifted for several minutes while dust continued to whirl on the ground. At this time the Eastern twin was growing wider.
Condensation funnels started to drop from the western mesocyclone and twins were again on the ground growing in size and closer together. The eastern twin was arcing to the north while the western twin tracked more northeast. Their damage paths would eventually cross about 5 miles northeast of Pilger or 5 miles northwest of Wisner. From my perspective the twin tornadoes vanished behind a rainy mass and another mesocyclone would develop just to the east and drop the soon to be Wakefield EF-4 tornado.
Curtains of rain cleared in the rainy mass revealing a thick tube that would crawl easterly along or near the Wayne County line. This tornado became the rope satellite that would slingshot around the southern flank of the developing Wakefield tornado. The Wakefield tornado tracked almost due north and dissipated to the east of Wakefiled.
After the Wakefield tornado moved into the rain and dissipated, a new mesocyclone developed to the east or southeast continuing the double helix mesocyclone development pattern of the day. The storm was now thinning and displaying a long twisted updraft. This updraft would threaten with several bowl funnel clouds with weak rotation confirmed on the ground on two seperate occasions by storm chaser Aaron Rigsby before dropping the finally brief weak Hubbard "scuddy" tornado.
This storm weakened drastically as it crossed into Iowa near Sioux City.

I live In pilger, I was taking a nap when my mom woke me up abruptly and said, "basement, now!" I was half asleep and didnt know what was really happening so I asked, "what's happening." She said, "a tornado is heading right towards us." We went in our basement and I checked the ketv radar and we were in tornado watch. The tornado has touched right in front of my house, I prayed for the best and we were fine. Debris was covering the way to get back upstairs so it took us an hour or so to remove it, we luckily brought shoes, we went upstairs just to see that everything was gone. We sat their it pure terror as everything I've ever grown up with was gone. Never getting it back. It's gone.

@@Wisdom-Nuggets-Tid-Bits Hi! Nebraska native here. Depending on the speed of the rotation and winds, Tornados can have a high pitched whistle or shrieking sound as they go on their path of destruction. There's a saying about tornados that I learned as a child. "When the sky turns yellow and you hear winds begin to shriek and shrill, beware a tornado will kill." Hope that helped!

It’s amazing when the lightning is so close; it sizzles. Also when the electricity in the air makes the hair on your arms stand up. I’ve been by some lightning strikes, the tree in my yard has been hit more than once, and the parking lot right outside of my apartment window, but I actually don’t remember the sound. It must have been like how some people don’t hear the crash when they are in a car wreck. It all happens so fast. I just remember the bright flash and actually feeling the bang instead of hearing it.

Oml I remember this one time when I was in 4th grade, there was a tornado that touched down somewhere nearby the school. Because the school was small and didn't have a basement, we were all rushed out of the classrooms and into the hallways. The school was so tiny we only had three hallways all of them had windows except for one. Can you imagine over 500 little kids screaming, and crying, crammed into a single hallway. Combined with panicking teachers and tornado sirens going off all around. It was absolute hell lol. We we're stuck in that hallway for nearly 4 hours. Then we learned that the tornado barely touched the ground for a few minutes before dissolving.😒 Tornados during school are fucking terrifying oof.

I remember last year at school about 4 days before my birthday we were issued a tornado watch. At that time I had an extremely big fear of weather. I was allowed to stay in the principals office until my mom could pick me up and stay with me the rest of the day. I remember at 1 point in that office the wind started going crazy and me and some of the middle schoolers went to the window. I even went to the art room to get my mind off of it. But then, after my mom picked me up, she was going to help primary, I heard on the loud speakers they played the NWS announcement for a tornado warning. Little kids started crying as well as me because again, I had a fear of weather. We sheltered for about 20 minutes. That was some of the most terrifying 20 minutes of my life. But now I’ve conquered that fear. We live in the south east of America where probability is low. I realize now that we’re pretty safe. Heck, I wanna see tornados now rather than hide from em

I don't know what it is like with 500 students in one hallway for four hours though, all I've experienced is that during that storm, the whole 3rd grade was put into a janitors room instead of the hallways.

Honestly, tornadoes aren’t an irrational fear. An irrational fear would be like thinking you could get sucked into your shower drain. Tornadoes are real and you have absolutely no control over them. None of us have the power to control them. Man, I’ve been scared of tornadoes since I was little. Now, about to be 18, still am. It’s always been my worst fear, and it sucks because others don’t seem to be as scared as I am. I’m tired of being afraid of them though, it’s annoying.

I find tornadoes fascinating, yet I’ve still had a nightmare that I can remember of one hitting my family’s cabin. I’d love to see a small to midsized one in person someday at a safe distance, in a field in the middle of nowhere, but I’d be just as terrified as anyone else if one was headed straight toward me at my house or family’s cabin. The cabin once got hit by a plough wind multiple times in one year, and the first time it happened, my family and I didn’t know what was going on. We all went to the downstairs bathroom, and I thought there might be a tornado. I cried and prayed for my life in that bathroom for 15 minutes or more until the wind died down. I’ve only ever heard it called a “plough wind”, but I don’t know what the official name for that type of damaging wind is. It whipped up the waves on the lake to a height of maybe a meter, washing board sections and the paddleboat off of the dock. Another hit later that summer during a family reunion. Almost everyone had gone to bed. I somehow slept through that one in the loft.
