@@SarahParkMatott yes, but it's more than that. Let me tell you why you are helping: I have a genetic disability, a neurological disease that has made every male in my family that has it need a wheelchair by my age (I'm 53) - so I gave up driving in my 20s to force myself to walk, bike, skate, box, etc to prevent my muscles from deteriorating as much as possible. In boxing, we've a discipline called "adaptive boxing" for disabled / handicapped people, where we learn multiple techniques that we can use by breaking things down into pieces and adapting what we can that fits. You do the same. In skateboarding, I cannot do certain tricks due to my neurological disease and deterioration it has caused in my leg muscles - but I love cruising, downhill, and slalom boarding, so that's what I do. BUT, by breaking down the tricks AND analyzing how it effects me as I try them, I learn more of how I interact to my board and how I can adapt that to better my use within my own specific bodily context.
Another great method and tutorial! Starting today. Very similar to what you said about pressure points, but a tip from another tutorial that seemed to mentally help me: to purposefully pick toe or heel side to rest in, so you mostly have to focus on the forward/backwards axis.
@SarahParkMatott
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 🙏 and for sure! That’s what I was kind of getting at with the not to worry about that axis and just favor whatever one you naturally lean towards. But picking a side is also a good way to not worry about that 😃 That’s solid advice!

Awesome tutorial! I like how you applied tension because it's something I've always wondered about manuals - do people press the tail down, or lift the front knee up to go into a manual (and vice versa for a nose manual)? Thank you Sarah for the tutorial 😊
@SarahParkMatott
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! 🙏 Getting into manual is almost a shifting more than pushing anything in any way. But, the slight tension was a big piece of the puzzle for me. Just a little to get into the manual more controlled and then keep me steady! Hopefully that helps you too 😃
Thanks for these videos! I really enjoy watching others learn skating and share their thoughts. I’ve always felt so uncoordinated with my hands and legs, so as you’d imagine, skating has been hard for me. I think Dan corrigan also recommended learning them stationary, so I started sticking my wheels in a crack in the pavement and just started from there, or hold onto a rail or table to really find the right sweet spot. I like that timer idea too ✌🏻

Just a tip: i've noticed it can be really hard to manual with a bad set of bearings, so you might want to try upgrading if things are feeling inconsistent. Sometimes the two wheels on one side of my board are rolling better than the other side also. But i've skated some cheap boards, and the bearings threw me off more than anything else.
I've been skating for a decade and my manuals can be on and off some days. I used to be so much better at them, and don't even get me started on nose manuals! This video has definitely given me some inspiration to try this myself and see how far I can progress with a 30 day challenge like yours, I hope to get a much more consistent manual/nose manual soon! You’ll get it 💪 the stationary manual really compounds. Feels like there is no progress and then all of a sudden you start gettin’ somewhere😂 so, hope you can have fun and stick with it 🙌
The counting method is very clever. The thought has also crossed my mind - that practicing stationary manuals would make rolling manuals easier but I've never practiced them like that. I find nose manuals much easier for some reason but I can only hold them for a short time (more than actual manuals). After seeing your vid I will definitely do this on rainy days. Balance is a skill too after all. Your channel is very helpful, thanks!!!
@SarahParkMatott

Balance is most definitely a skill! And I have heard a few times that kind if like heelflips and kickflips, some skaters naturally feel more comfortable doing nose manuals or regular ones. I am not a natural nose manny type 😂 but yes! this is indeed perfect for rainy days! Glad you’re enjoying the channel 😃
Kick pocket is pretty helpful. A consistent concave from top to bottom molds both nose and tail kick pockets where you put feet on .

Glad it was helpful! Thank you! My greetings to Germany 🙋♀️
I remember learning nose manuals from a trick tip in a transworld magazine. And one key step in that trick tip was that you should put your front foot on your front bolts when you ollie. That way you don’t have to move your front foot so far when you ollie and it makes it easier to keep your balance when you land on your front wheels. Also it makes you not do a too high of an ollie as you might have done with your front foot lower down on the board. Hopefully this will help someone.
This seems like a really good idea! I'm starting my 30 days today :)

that can be really scary for sure. Take your time. You'll get there 💪
Thanks for the tips Sarah, and good work. I particularly thought the nose manuals looked good. I've been working on manuals too. I've mostly been doing them rolling, but, recently, have been trying them at low speed, and I've been trying to get a feel for turning left and right and carving while manualling. I noticed the same thing as you with regard to keeping the board flat, or, angling it a little more toward you heel. It seem like you really need to get that down for turning while manualling, or, even for kick turn spins. I hope to get to the point where I can decently space walk. I need to start working nose manuals. I've pretty much exclusively been working on tail manuals as I'm afraid to twist an ankle or slam doing a nose manual. I think you are smart for trying to learn them at the same time. If you want to see a gnarly nose manual, watch Dan Corrigan's video that has a title "world record manual" or something along those lines. Dan did a high-speed hillbomb manual in that video. And June Saito did a manual that was over two minutes long going down a hill. That guy June is amazing at manuals. I've seen other videos of him ride forwards and backwards down inclines doing manuals.
@SarahParkMatott
2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah Dan and June Saito are really good at manuals. Would love to get to that level of consistency and control. I have neglected nose manuals a little bit recently. But I want to go back and doing both again because I want spacewalks too 🙌 Wish you luck. Let's go get those spacewalks 💪

Nice. I'm 51 just getting back on a board after over 30 years and I've been doing something similar on grass (in LA, sorry about your weather lol). Your daily consistency and strategy for managing your count seem to be points I'm falling short on. Time to change that. I really appreciate you sharing your insights.

have fun! 😃
You are learning fast. Most are not willing to put in that effort. They are so fun once you have them down. If you consistently practice the way you have you will get really good at them. Then you can start learning to pop into manuals for manual pads.
Your channel is fantastic. Learning the science behind a lot of these tricks has really helped me. Thank you so much! Question: what gloves are you wearing in some of the videos? I’ve been looking for good skate gloves. Looking forward to more tutorials. Thanks again!

Thank you! :D I'm glad you've been enjoying the channel. I have tried a few pairs of gloves. I do a lot of grabs (finger flips etc), and so I like a glove that just protects my palms when I fall and doesn't rip right away from fingerflips. I haven't found an awesome pair yet. I've tried baseball batting gloves and another random pair. But, right now I'm using an underarmer pair of running gloves, and I like them a lot so far.

@@SarahParkMatott When I first started in the late 80s early 90s there used to be this company called Clawz and they made gloves specifically for skating. They were awesome. Now it’s near impossible to find gloves just for skateboarding. I just got back into it after destroying my knees in 2000 and I’m basically relearning everything. Will definitely try out the UA gloves. Thanks again!

Clawz needs to make a comeback then 😂 I really wish there were gloves for skating. I hate shredding my hands or taping them. Hope you can find a decent pair! (And welcome back to skating :D
