Basics of Longboard Pumping - How to Pump (LDP)

Learning to pump, AKA Long Distance Pumping or LDP, is crazy because you're trying to learn some magic thing based on people explaining sensations, I hope this more technical vid helps get you on the right track!
Currently using a pantheon ember, and supersonic (which can do split angle or zero rear!) as my main demo boards in this video. Thing to note is you CAN pump any board but especially for beginners, a more efficient well setup board will help you get the hang of it much easier, so make some friends if you can and test their setups out to get a feel for it!

I've never owned a "pumping" board but I first learned it in the late '70s on a homemade longboard with Indy 151s and Red Krypyonics. I got much better at it when I picked up skating again in the late '90s and actually got into the slalom scene. These days I don't skate anymore (i'm 60 with an artificial hip) but the last time I did skate was on a 35" giant slalom board with super adjustable precision GOG trucks, set up for pumping on smooth flat ground. Something like 65/15 degrees. I used to regularly ride over half a mile at a time without putting a foot down until my mid 50s!

Never having really tried pumping or tried learning how to, I watched your video, went down to a nearby carpark and managed to nearly do a full lap only pushing about 3-4 times per-side (rectangular space), then pumping away. I guess everyone is right and this is an excellent instructional video! During the practise sesh I also found sometimes the pumping action actually slowed me down, so that must be me "throwing my wieght" at a discordant timing. Still very new to this (2 months in as a complete novice) and so so much fine tuning on everything to be done :), I still get nerves every night, but thats how you know its somthing actually worth doing and has truly addictive potential as a hobby.

Greetings ! I have been watching your videos since the one you released about your Ultraskate record, and have been intrigued by this sport ever since. After watching countless other videos of people just cruising so effortlessly on their board, I finally decided to pull the trigger recently and bought my first LDP (probably completely overkill for a noob like me.) I got the Pantheon Supersonic , mostly because I think it is a beautiful looking piece of work (Looks even better irl when u see the details such as the dark green moss tone of the wood, the cool Jupiter planet that is made into sections to ). I have been ESK8 for the past year and first stepping foot onto the Supersonic was completely different, there is zero wheel resistance, and it moves as soon as I touch it, vs the ESK8 with the weight and belt résistance, so I am still trying to get used to the smoothness of the rolling. As a complete beginner here are the things I found to be challenging for me: 1-Pushing. I've seen the technique most LDP use where they lift their pushing leg up high ,then let it drop down (like an axe motion). For me when I tried that, I felt very unstable being only on 1 foot plus the board being so smooth. So I have kinda been practicing just standing on one-leg while on the board in my room. I hope that will help somewhat eventually. For now I just push what is natural for me even though it is not as efficient a technique as the pros. 2-Foot brake- I watched a few videos on foot braking and it seemed easy enough to learn, but in practice it can be quite daunting because I feel like when I put my foot down to brake , it is going to grab the ground and twist my ankle or throw me way off balance, so I gotta slowly work on that. 3- Finding an area that is best suited for learning, I live around hills and small inclines, so the worst for learning for me. It's so hard to tell in the videos if the riders are going down a slight incline and thats how they are able to maintain the speeds at long distances or if it is more or less flat. I will have to find a nice flat route to practice all this stuff on. This is my beginning journey into experiencing riding a board in a completely new style and wanted to thank you for your knowledge , passion, and dedication to this sport. It is inspiring to see someone truly chase their dreams and in a way suffer for it (living out of a van, low-paying job). Wish you the best in all do, cheers!

That's awesome! Yes the pushing and foot braking can always improve! I've been doing it for years and I'm still trying to push my boundaries pushing off balance with one leg! But that's also what makes it so much fun even on a normally boring bike trail I guess! Hills the same thing, haha. In terms of pumping, I guess something to keep in mind is it's best on flat roads or slight declines. Eric palmer pumped around 250 miles around the Miami speedway at a decent clip! So it's super feasible to be as efficient as pushing, or more! But for beginners you might find the best gains on slight declines, you can turn a 7 mph slight declines into a 18 mph experience with not a ton of effort pumping! Meanwhile pushing at 18 mph is borderline sketchy for some, or quite hard!

I just started longboarding a few months ago, and I've found that learning to balance on one foot helps a lot, but also always pay close attention to and memorize proper foot placement. Off by just a fraction, and you'll turn, lose balance, etc. Often you'll have to readjust foot placement while pushing, especially in corners, or on crowned roads. Braking can be tricky. I haven't learned to foot drag or power slide. I foot stomp, basically pushing in reverse. It saves your shoes, too. However, your speed is limited with this technique because it's risky at higher speeds. My main rule is to always control my speed and not go faster than I can run in case I have to bail. Don't be afraid to bail, but catch your board. It's the fastest way to stop. Going down steeper hills, I just basically "walk" my board down. Balance on one foot and step/brake with the other foot. Always control your speed. Aside from braking down steep hills, sometimes it's faster, less risky, and more efficient just to carry the board down. Good luck

I find putting weight on my heel and then pivoting around my heel can quickly let me adjust my forefoot's center, once you swap to your non-dominant support leg. Also finding a good register! It takes some extra time but I jam my foot into the exact point of arch of my other foot that's center of balance, when I need it to be perfect.

What trucks are you running in your directional setup with the supersonic? I currently have the 150mm paris 50 degree in the front and 43 degree 150mm in the back. The rear truck is currently de-wedged to about 12 degrees. I just ordered a DT Bhanger for the front, so I'm excited to slap that on and see the difference. I didn't mention that for simplicity sake but that's a good point, essentially the shorter wheelbase you have the more high frequency the pumping is. Great for slalom, but the longer wheelbase stuff with some flex lets you lean into it more and do slower more powerful pumps.

@@barrydworak Skateboards are definitely fun, but in commuting and LDP efficiency is important. I also stated that my comment applied to people looking for efficiency, so if fun is your primary goal, my comment wouldn't apply to you. Pushing not feeling good is subjective. I enjoy pushing and it feels great to me. I've tried pump only LDP and do not like it at all. What feels best to me is a mix of pumping and pushing. It's nice to have a break from pumping when going long distances. Not everyone likes or wants an eskate. I've tried them and it ruins the riding experience and flow for me. If you want to just pump pump pump nonstop, and that's fun for you, with fun being your only objective, then go for it. Nothing wrong with that, skating is about doing it however you want. Some of us like pushing also, and pushing adds increased efficiency over pumping alone, and is adding it creates a more diverse full body workout than only pumping.
