One of my favourite parts of retirement is getting rid of the alarm. It’s wonderful to wake up naturally when your body is ready.

Hi it's Annie I like those suggestions I like to show gratitude often and I try few positive affirmations, get bed and dishes done, floors swept rugs vacumed. Light a nice fragrance candles and incense around the house and garden.

I am retired, so there is no need for an alarm. But, I usually wake up early, have a cup of coffe and read or watch videos (such as Sixty and Me). I then do some stretching while concentrating on my breathing before making my bed. I will add the affirmations, as well as write 3 things for which I'm grateful! Thank you, Margaret!

I’m 74, retired for 10 years and never have set an alarm even when working. Seemed I always woke at the same time every day without an alarm. Wake now around 5, make bed, have coffee, catch on up emails, listen to a video or 2, then make a list of what I want to accomplish. Do a workout video 3-4 times a week and attend a Y class 2x week. I have a lot of energy and am totally enjoying my lifestyle. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to your informative and calming videos.

Showing gratitude is so important. I try (don't always succeed) to pray in the morning. It doesn't have to be denominational or formal but for me, it's thanking God for my health and for the blessings in my life. Oh, and always make your bed.

I usually get up at 4am, and I either watch videos that interest me at the moment or I read for an hour. I always say my affirmation at different times during the day, whenever I am straying away from positive thoughts. After I have my cup of hot chocolate, I do an hour of hard work, either gardening or painting, or fixing something. Mainly I am trying to simplify my life, which is hard to do Margaret thank you fo all the great advice. You are a jewel!

Lots of great ideas. I’ve been making my bed in am for several months now and as a previous non bed maker it definitely does order the day and I would definitely recommend this morning habit. I have read that waking at 3-4am is very common and part of sleep cycle. Just say a few prayers and let yourself fall back to sleep. If this doesn’t work I just get up early and go to bed earlier. 😊

For me my morning rituals are getting up as soon as my alarm goes off. I agree this truly sets the tone for the day. Then I either have a shower or get dressed right away. To me this tells me I'm ready to get on with my day and do the tasks set before me. I took early retirement four years ago and for the first two years I was not following any routines at all and was getting depressed and seeing my youth slip away. It wasn't until I gave myself a huge talking to and then started following a lovely Scottish lady who happens to live in Denmark - Dianeindenmark. She is a Fly Lady mentor who shares ways of setting up cleaning routines for your home and she is so encouraging. I look forward to her cheery Scottish accent every morning. So now I have found you and this is great. I believe we are all here for each other and should encourage one another along our paths. 💕

Hey Margaret, since being told I've high cholesterol ive been on a weight loss diet, and have indeed bought the cholesterol Down by cutting out bread, pastries, crisps, and processed meats, spreads and meals... And start everyday with a chia seed oats breakfast with dried apricots, dates and almond, cashew Or soya milk added, put all those ingredients in a bowl with some cinnamon on top, then cover and put in fridge overnight and really enjoy it in the morning after a big glass Of warm water with lemon juice, which starts the digestion too.... Have amazing day paula x

My suggestions: If you are retired and don't have a schedule, don't set an alarm at all. Just wake up whenever. I get up anywhere between 6:30 and 10:00. My most difficult times when I am at loose ends is between Noon and 5:00. In the evening I drop most of the stress. I think it's because once it's dinnertime, you can relax just like you used to do when you came home from work. Another suggestion I have if you are really restless and can't sleep and it's almost time or past time to change the sheets....I have been known to jump up and take a 5 minute hot bath, change my nightgown and change the sheets...and voila I go right to sleep. I think some people overlook how important a spotless bed and body can be. When I am emotionally stressed I meditate by lying flat on the carpet and put on summer thunderstorm, rain or gentle beach natural sounds from KZread.

I make my bed everyday and I try to meditate when I discipline myself to do so. I’m taking medication classes. I’ve taken two so far and have four more to go. Last week’s subject was loving yourself which reminded me of one of your videos. I feel better when I meditate in the morning. The worry journal sounds interesting. I often take my worries to bed with me which makes for a fitful night’s sleep. Sometimes they come out of nowhere.

I drink a cuppa hot tea in bed at night and believe that is why I get up but I just can't GET to sleep without my cuppa. I used to make my bed every morning but now just toss the covers over the pillows. I have meditated for many years now. actually long before I even knew what I was doing...lol! I just knew it made a big difference in the way I felt! My morning rituals are checking my IPad and see who has what to share. This weekend I made beautiful Sugar cookies in fall colors and posted my baking creativity on my Faceball wall. Then do the bathroom ritual, make lunch and get ready to start my job at school. I am having anxiety issues on credit debt with not the right income to pay the debt, so I have been with creditors to lower the monthly payment. I thank God for another day, thank my Reiki angel for being my coach of surviving these senior years. My affirmations for today are 11/4/19 are: I’m going to smile more, I’m going to the gym and trying to go a few minutes more to keep that circulation moving. I can’t make my bed, I sleep in a recliner but I fold my blankets. I love u Margaret. Thanks for caring and sharing.

I would add turn off electronic devises one hour before bedtime including kindle. I started a morning ritual a couple years ago that included prayer with all the things I’m thankful and handing over things I can’t control. I enjoy a nice cup of coffee and take in the beautiful scenery in my backyard. Once I began to acknowledge and embrace the blessings in my life, I looked forward to the start of my day. Oh, I do make my bed every day and never use an alarm clock (unless I have an early morning flight).

Drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water, it helps with my acid reflux. Having my one daily cup of good coffee, often flavored with my own mix of (seasonal) spices. Feeding, petting, and playing with my kitty, a life-affirming connection to another living being. Planning the highlights of my day, but also reminding myself it's OK not to do all of them. These are the four constant things I do in the first hour in addition to the usual wake-up hygiene routine. There are others I do every day, as well, but as I work them in. I'm not as schedule driven as I was when working full time. Thank goodness that's over! Heck, some days I don't even put on makeup, granted it's usually the rainy days when I know I won't be leaving the house or having anyone stop by. :)

Thanks for this topic. As a night person who also deals with chronic pain (arthritis) mornings are usually my most difficult part of the day. Your suggestions are all very helpful. Might I add another one? I like to read inspirational literature as one of the first things I do in the morning. By inspirational I mean wisdom literature of various faiths (scripture), wise words from good people such as the Dali Lama and the emperor Marcus Aurelius, or anything that has a positive and uplifting message. It sets the right tone for the rest of the day.☺️

Pretty in pink sweet Margaret !! Great ideas for morning life :) I write 10 things I am grateful for every morning (even things I don't have yet but feel I do in my mind) and send love to three people who have done me wrong. My problem is awakening and immediately tuning into MSN, MSNBC and the Guardian to see what is going on in the political world. Then onto Facebook for 30 min to check on everyone (an hour goes by and then I am annoyed with myself) and this must STOP. Since my kids are gone and I am not obligated to an employer, I do not set my alarm. I plan to resume making lists every day of what must be accomplished and the time I will allow for each task. I will add this to my morning routine and also tune in to an uplifting audio for 30 min.

Wish a retired single woman over 60 would make a video showing her usual morning, mid-day, & evening routines. I've seen several of these done by younger married women. Jesus Calling is a wonderful book. Found Nic Sagala on YT reading each day's passage followed by brief comments. Warm soothing voice with his toddlers sometimes in the background. I find it very grounding. Another book I enjoy is Daily Om by Madisyn Taylor.

Only time I make my bed is when I change my sheets. I do hay problems sleeping but part of that is the 20+ years I worked all night long, slept days. After retiring it is still often difficult sleeping at night. But, I may try some of your ideas. I set an alarm but almost always am awake before it goes off. I enjoy sitting on my deck, coffee in hand and listen/watch the birds in my backyard.

I don't own an alarm clock. My sleeping is erratic - I'm a Night Owl by nature and most alert and creative at night. Often nap in early evening. I wake up at different times - later in fall/winter because Sunrise is so late. As for the other ideas, they have been around a long time - meditate/pray, keep a gratitude journal. But it IS important to be grateful for the fact that you're still alive. Especially as we get older! I mean, eventually we will wake up dead some morning. It can happen! As for making the bed - I NEVER make the bed. I fold back the blankets or hang them over a rack (bettrr still, outdoors) to air. I let the bed and pillows air out. Easy enough to throw freshened duvet and blankets on bed when you want to sleep! PS I have always been a Haphazard Housekeeper and Gardener. Now that I am 'retired' - though from what, is hard to say - I am starting a blog with this title.
