    Those dunks were mostly hype because of who was doing it. It's why Jordan got a perfect score twice for doing the same generic free throw dunk in 88. Ibaka's dunk in 2011 was a perfect free throw dunk and he didn't even get a 50; that alone tells you it's all player hype.

    I think you’re nitpicking a bit on Lavine’s free throw dunk. I mean you’re talking about a few inches inside the line, for a guy that does it effortlessly. If he were truly outside the line, the dunk would’ve looked the same. And you can tell he would’ve made it if he were even a few inches behind the line.

  • @tristanrodeback3838

    @tristanrodeback3838

    I think the whole point he's making is it's not something unique among the many people who have participated in the NBA dunk competition. People have done free-throw line dunks going back to the 80s. Only a handful of people have done actual behind the free-throw line dunks during that same time period. If they were basing his score on being a free-throw line dunk it shouldn't have warranted as high of a score. If they were basing his score on him doing the alley-op then why did they give him a higher score than Moon who did the same dunk yrs before? Cause they are inconsistent. Hence the msg at the beginning of the video: Consistent.

    I agree that the first Finals dunk should've been the deciding factor in giving Gordon the win and sudden death shouldn't have happened. However, I think your free throw line dunk analysis is pretty weak and nonsensical. His alley-oop was much cleaner than Moon's and slightly further back. His windmill and between the legs (while not incredibly clean) were so smooth and first time dunks in the NBA dunk contest (you'd have to look to other dunk contests to find them replicated). You aren't taking style, smoothness, or airtime into consideration and sound really nitpicky here

    But that's the point lol. You HAVE to nitpick when both dunkers are executing at such a high level. And quite frankly, there were more things wrong with zach's dunks than AG's dunks. AG's dunks were far more creative while being just as stylish and smooth as zach's dunks. A couple of AG's dunks were slightly more technically difficult as well due to the timing and extreme movements (ie. timing of the one handed scoop dunk and extreme move of the under both legs dunk over the mascot).

    Usually I agree with most of your videos, but I can't say I agree with a lot of your points this time around. Point 1: That first free throw line dunk by LaVine was off by what, one or two inches? The distance was more or less the same, and the execution was great. If this was surgery, I would understand that level of precision, but this is basketball. Point 2: As for Magic Johnson, his opinions and taste may have changed from 2008 to 2016. If you were to judge his scoring in the same contest, same year, then that would make much more sense. Point 3: Zach's first final round dunk was, in my eyes, an obvious 50. Yes it was a copy of AG's original dunk with the mascot, but who said a score of 50 requires true innovation and originality? The level of difficulty, timing and position of the bounce, as well as the beautiful execution made it a 50. It was an improvised dunk that was pulled off effortlessly in his first try, and it looked amazing in every camera angle. Yes it was a remix dunk, but it's still arguably one of the greatest dunks in dunk contest history nonetheless. Point 4: the quote in the end: "Zach won because he scored 50, Aaron lost because he could only score 50." Um what? I don't see how that makes any sense at all lol. Hypothetically if he really scores all 50s from start to finish, wouldn't that make him the clear winner then? You can't beat all 50's. But with all that being said, I still believe AG deserved to win that contest. I believe the reason why there's all these robberies in dunk contests is because 1) there's two amazing dunkers who are neck to neck in the race, and 2) the standard for scoring just needs to change. A great dunk and an excellent dunk are both 50's, which is the problem.

  • @okdokgg857

    point 3: AG's dunk was more creative, and more difficult given the timing of cupping a ball moving laterally is more difficult than cupping a ball relatively static in the air a couple seconds after bounce. And if you call zach's copycat dunk one of the greatest in dunk contest history, then idk what to say lol point 4: the point he's making is that if zach's dunks were 50s, some of AG's dunks deserved higher than 50s as they were clearly superior to zach's 50 dunks. But due to the scoring system, AG could only score 50.

    I watched this contest live. You’re missing ONE BIG DETAIL. Shaq gave him a 9 because he didn’t make the lob free throw the first time. Shaq clearly said “you gotta make it on the first try”. The windmill free throw dunk was made on the first try and that’s why he got the 50. It didn’t have anything to do with him stepping on the line. Once again it’s not if I agree or disagree with this video but the 9 from Shaq was because he missed the lob free throw the first time

    A between the legs dunk no step in the free throw line should rightfully so be judged higher than a regular free throw line dunk a step behind. That’s why we’ve never seen anyone windmill and between the legs like that. They’re hard dunks

  • @okdokgg857

    @@LuckyC1723 actually its much harder to dunk from at/behind the free throw line than a windmill or between the legs with a step inside. That reduced distance is what allows guys to even complete the dunk. If they gotta take off from the line, the dunk fails for most of these guys. It's pretty easy to windmill while you've got that much airtime as well. Between the legs is a little more challenging. Neither comes close to Jordan's legit free throw dunk tho...

    I totally agree and think that Gordon also got Robbed but that comparison between the "free-throw" line alley-oop dunk from Zach and Moon was unfair for two reasons. First Zach took off from further away than Moon if i see correctly. Second the effortlessness of Zach, Zach is full in control during the entire fly, seems in the air longer and manage to slam it with much more violence than Moon. For me if Moon was a 47, Zach would be a 49. Despite the lack of originallity from Zach. But I agree Zach wasnt innovative and that plays a huge role (at least for me), Zach also got the constant help from the crowd. I still remember the farce that KAT and go did, being unphased by Gordon dunks while pretending to be so excited by Zach every single dunk that I thought Zach actually discover the remedy against AIDS. Regarding the other dunks from Lavine, the windmill is a 50 for me. I mean the hangtime and momentum it requires is completely insane. But the behind the back is in no way a 50 by any standard of the competition in particular AFTER what Gordon did.

    I think the Slamdunk contest can improve by having each judge a chance to score an "11" per round for a really breathtaking dunk. 10s are easily given today. Plus,a judge should score after the replay because it gives them more understanding of the dunk.

    As someone who's dunked from the free throw line area. If your foot is 3 inches in front of the line, then it's considered a free throw dunk. Only when someone says behind the line does it indicated that specific notion.

The judges and players were clearly bias and overreacted to non creative dunks by Zack. Like what exactly were they really critiquing? AG clearly won that no disrespect to Zack but AG won that 🤷🏾‍♂️

    So the question becomes, should the judges use a relative scoring system, instead of an objective scoring system? Zach's 3rd dunk is a 50, obviously, but it was not better than Aaron's 3rd dunk. How do we fix problem while remaining objective? Perhaps the judges should be allowed to assign an 11 to one dunk of their choice?

    the problem is the judges are way too quick to hand out 50s. You look at how judging is done in olympics for example, and how strict they are about giving high scores. Judges need to be more disciplined and qualified. No more random celebs. More previous dunk contest winners/participants who know what it takes to pull off extreme dunks. More people who have actually witnessed extreme dunks from the past and can use that as a reference point for their judging. Problem solved...

  • @Jburneyjr
    @Jburneyjr4 жыл бұрын

    The 360 scoop dunks were definitely much different. Aaron was the first in the contest to do it however, the degree of difficulty in Zack is actually higher since both have to work on timing which makes that part even but the fact he did it off of 2 feet makes it harder to do than Aarons dunk.
