I took mine to the field yesterday and did several flights. Mostly low level passes which I love seeing the plane fly that close.First time flying it on 4s too! It rips! Just 6 months ago or soo I would have never thought Id be flying a plane like this. My umx turbo timber scared me to death when I first started flying. Lol. This plane is soo good im considering buying another just for a backup. Lol

Great bird, and have most of the E-Flite branded 1.2 meter Warbirds and find them almost perfect, my favorite being the P-47 Razorback. Absolutely agree on flying RC foamies, I also do RC bash cars, track cars, crawlers and boats. In terms of cost per smiles, RC planes is it. Flying foamies of this type is so much cheaper than any other form of hobby grade RC, I can buy 3 to 4 bind and fly 1.2M foamies for the price of a 10th scale track car. My 100 mph brushless RC boats are probably the most spectacular thing to see in action, but they cost a lot of money to run and fix, the opposite for planes. Buy a decent Spektrum radio, buy a Bind and Fly foamy with SAFE, and you can start flying right away, slowly wean yourself off SAFE as you get better. Though Real Flight Sim is how I got really good at flying.

Beautiful. They don’t look or fly any better than that. Watched one of them flying wing tip to wing tip with a Blue Angel earlier this summer. During a local air show here in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They were low and banked tight. You could see their helmets through the canopy. Horizon Hobby covered all the bases on this one. Then in your hands, you make it look even better. Thank you Brian and Megan. Another awesome video.

Hi Brian and camera crew. I really love low level flying and watching you fly against the house and then go heading the right hand Bank from the house and then banking left this is pretty neat stuff Brian. Very cool to watch. Maybe beyond my skill level right now but I have my site set on some more birds someday.

You'll get there quicker than you realize! Like you, I want to see the plane do plane stuff! A simple circuit is just not good enough for these planes ;) Sure it's good for training, flying in a simple circuit but it's lame to watch. I want to see the plane make scale maneuvers, and some cool aerobatics once in a while too, and also fly the scenery. This is a huge part of the joy of flying for me, and many of you out there in the real world. Glad we get the opportunity to make this footage for you Traveler!

2200 4S in the center and locked into the tray thingy - golden ;) Funny, since the Arrows 1.1m will end up DOA if you're off by a few mm's on the CG, but why?!?!?! It's almost the same plane, but I think these subtle differences between models is why Eflite has the edge they have over some competitive offerings, but to be fair, Arrows does a GREAT job giving Eflite a run for their money. We want to support smaller business that are able to keep up with giants like Horizon Hobby, to keep them honest ;) Better competition means BETTER PLANES for all!!!

This video is most inspiring, Brian. Thank you! It's the push I need to keep at it. I've been flying helis and waterplanes forever. And I'm in a rut. They're all slow and scale. Except for the Skipper. So I picked up one of these on sale in February. It is all set up and ready for maiden. But I'm afraid of it because of my lack of time in type. Plus, there is no paved field around here for miles. So flying at the church or school might be all I have. I'm gradually speeding up the UMX fleet in preparation for tackling the P-51. Once the UMX Citation is flying well, I'll bring out June Nite. It feels more doable now.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

Don't be afraid, be prepared. Bring the other plane, fly it first, then move up. If you crash, you'll lick your wounds, and glue her back, and get up in the air. It's worth the risk, and you need to do it - it's what you love (if you're anything like me). Make a list of excuses - write them down, then cross them out, and write the solution. This will help, if you want to have a exercise to try. Lists help me get through the day, but when I'm scared or concerned, with any level of validity, I like to write down the issues, and start crossing them off. It helps me process concerns. I may look pretty happy-go-lucky, maybe even reckless, but if you knew me in real life, I'm actually a safety prude, in most regards.

Hey Brian and Camera Crew! Your videos encouraged me to try RC planes as a new hobby. Started with a Mini Apprentice quite a while ago to learn how to fly virtually every day until I was capable to do without safe literally everything except super fancy aerobatics (loops and warbird-ish super tight turns excluded 😜). I LOVED it the second the apprentice was in the air. By now I wanted to add this beautiful P-51D as a second plane. No idea how often I was watching all your videos about it. Today was the maiden. Crashed it. Twice in a row: I had my usual long and solid runway, waited until it started to ascend by itself after many meters to have enough speed (takeoff flaps + full throttle using a smart 3S 2200mAh 30C battery) to get a somehow beautiful scale take off. But as soon as it started to gain some height by itself, in parallel it started to tilt to the left as I would apply a bit of left aileron. A right aileron correction did nothing. The plane continued a left turn until it came down crashing into a bush with lots of thorns luckily just damaging the perfect brand new optic. Safe was on and worked on the ground, so did everything else - until I tried to get it into the air. Wings were perfectly horizontal during takeoff procedure. A bit challenging to control the tail until it lifted off, but nothing unusual from what I've seen from videos of this bird, I'd say. Thinking that maybe SAFE or the gyro had a miscalibration, I reinitiated everything and tried a second takeoff w/o Safe as there was no wind at all. I kept the plane even longer on the ground. After the initial self liftoff I applied very gentle up elevator but literally seconds after this or maybe again in parallel, the exact same thing happened. Just with more distance to the ground and more speed. Thus, the 2nd maiden ended with a broken prop & spinner, a deformed front of the fuselage, flaps that go crazy if I switch from takeoff- to full flaps and last but not least a physically damaged battery I have to discharge and dispose 😭 I am devastated as I have no idea what the heck has happened here. For that kind of troubleshooting I am still too much of a novice, I guess. Sure, at some point it stalled due to this weird continous left turn while actually ascending but why didn't safe correct this turn behaviour in the first place during the first takeoff and why did no compensation input by myself show any signs of...effect - not even the slightest wobble. As if the plane was reduced to elevator and throttle for accepted input controls while airborne. Now, I am afraid to repair the damage just to let the same thing happen again as I have no idea what to improve or keep in mind for a potential third try at some point. If someone has a lead or another suggestion, that would be much appreciated. But I already feel better by processing the successfully failed pseudomaiden by writing this novel 😅 All the best from the other side of the ocean

  • @Anobis1503

    @Anobis1503

After two weeks of COVID and time to repair the damage, I just came back from the "2nd maiden". Turned out that I f*** up the CG during the first attempt to get the Mustang airborne. Apparently, I was too stupid to fingertip-check the CG correctly at first. Battery was misplaced by approx. 1,5-2cm so the plane was tailheavy. This time, all perfect. 2200mah & 3200mah battery with proper CG... it flew like on rails. With and without SAFE. Didn't now CG can be such a delicate thing. By know, I now it better :)

This plane is excellently balanced, so it makes it easier, but to be honest, it's all about finesse and having confidence that you can keep on the mains without a lot of issues. Once you "prove it" to your brain, you'll be fine. Just slowly build up throttle and then push the nose down (I know, sounds crazy..but you want to GET in control as soon as possible!) You have to say on the rudder the whole time, and you will get it. The key is to get into the power slower than ordinary. You can give a quick "burst" to get it off the tail wheel, then back it off QUICK, then slowly increase throttle to keep the thing from ripping to the right (usually toward me as the pilot - LOL). Gotta practice a lot, but when you get it, you'll be so proud!

And don't forget to use a shallow take off angle as well. I was so used to my trainers pretty much going vertical with throttle on takeoff that I tried a sharp take off with my Mustang and stalled it in mid air. Roll on the throttle, ease it up with elevator, and then climb out evenly while steadily increasing throttle. Now, if I could only get the courage to try again...

  • @MrWhatahelisdis

Depending on what transmitter you have, you can program a slow throttle-up speed enough to avoid the left-torque tendency during takeoff. I have the NX8. In the throttle cut menu, there's the option to set a timer for the throttle to activate. What that does is increase the throttle to whatever your stick position is in the timeframe that you set once you flip the throttle cut switch off. As a beginner, I set mine to 5 seconds. With throttle cut turned on still, I would set my throttle stick position to 80%. I would then turn off the throttle cut and the throttle would take 5 seconds to get to 80% power. That gets it up to speed safely so you don't careen off to the left and almost plow through a group of pilots (something I did as a beginner 🤣). Make sure that as it's gaining speed to keep a little up elevator so you don't run the prop into the runway and don't forget to use the rudder! There is a bit of finesse that you will only learn with practice. You may even crash a couple times. You WILL get it though. And when you do, it's a great feeling! I no longer takeoff or land the plane in SAFE or with the throttle cut timer. So if I can do it, you can too!

It's pretty easy to pivot this plane onto the mains, and full disclosure, I've flown four of this exact model (1 Blondie and 3 June Nites) , and they're all really easy....WAY easier than the 1.1m Arrows (even though it's good!) and FAR easier than the 1.5m Eflite. Got this as my first plane. Flew it for the first time a few weeks ago on 3s. Flies great as a beginner the takeoffs have been tough though. People keep telling me right rudder but it jumps left really quickly. Landing is so smooth with it though and it flies amazing just those takeoffs are a little hard. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it I think part of my problem is knowing when to rudder I might do it too late. I’ve got about 10 flights on it now tho haven’t had any major issues.

These planes ARE a handful. You might need ALL the rudder, AND MORE, to keep her straight. There have been OTHER choices that are not so clear, but definitely for this one, and admittedly, the F-4U too. Not to take anything away from Arrows 1.1m Warbirds - they are very nice too... Horizon Hobby P51 bit.ly/3ohT4zT - Also keep in mind BNF, rather than PNP - easier and more of a sure thing Arrows P51 bit.ly/3bgcH8l - Might be a little bit less expensive??? But it's actually a smaller plane too. Almost not a "fair" comparison.

Is a 3200 pack too heavy?

3200 is what I fly in mine. I just bring the battery back farther to keep cg. I've even flown a 4000 in mine. I just don't use the battery tray an Velcro it in. But the plane handles it fine

It's not a huge issue, but agree it would be nicer. I think they should all have them.

They put lights on this and suddenly the price would be $399 for a PNP version. They can keep the Christmas ornaments; June nite is a good deal at $320...

The P-51D was always a beautiful airplane, but the Horizon Hobby paint job scheme is ugly (on both the 1.2 and 1.5).....

I disagree that the livery is ugo...but I do prefer the Blondie over this June Nite...still love invasion stripes, but prefer the color matched nose and spinner.

1.5m looks so much better in person. I hated it until I opened the box - then I was in love with the looks...now to get the 1.5m to settle down on the tail wheel!!!!!
