    This plane is tough and flies beautifully. It is sketchy to land as you say. I acquired one of these that was severely crashed. The main wing snapped between the body and outer wing panel, the body was broken in a twisted manor and a flap torn off. I took this abandoned crash and repaired it back to flying condition. It is one of my most satisfying aircraft to fly. Beautiful in the sky, fun to remember that it was an abandoned pile that broke someone's heart, but reborn through determination and TLC. Thanks Brian & Camera Crew for all you do!

    Always enjoying your videos! Thanks for all you do! My buddy has this plane and I typically land it half flap/TO flaps so it doesn't porpoise so much. Definitely tricky to land full flap since it wants to balloon with the tiniest amount of throttle or tip stall when you pull the power back. Moving slightly faster with half flaps seems to make it way easier for me.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    Thanks, and yeah, true! Takeoff flaps are pretty effective on this bird, but to slow her insane amount of weight / momentum down, the landing flaps do a pretty good job, but the plane gets so dang un-controllable when you drop down the tail wheel!

    HI Brian. Just bought this plane eventually. Re thrust reverse, I'm sure you know but you can now get this on this plane (or any plane with an Avian ESC). All you have to do is update the firmware on the ESC. I have an NX10 but didn't get the screen on the radio to set it up. However, I used the XCA200 ESC update box to plug directly to the ESC and updated the firmware to the latest version. I could then add thrust reverse, either via the software on the computer or via the update box. You will find however that you also now get the programming screen on the radio. I'd love to see you set this up on this plane as it's clear that ground handling isn't great and thrust reverse may greatly affect your view if you can stop quickly. It would also be a great tutorial on using the XCA200 (which would probably help to sell them!) so would not be a fruitless exercise and I'd love to then see your 'third thoughts' on this plane using thrust reverse!

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    9 ай бұрын

    Yes, you're right. The Thrust Reverse would help curb the worst quality of this plane, it's ground handling, and tendency to chase me into the ditch - LOL ;) As for AVIAN setup with the Programmer tool, but maybe only once.

  • @rcdavidk

    Gorgeous touch and go's on the road. I'm glad you clarified your hard to fly comment. It's not a hard plane to fly... it easy to fly. It's the take-off that's precarious... you have to be on that rudder for take-off... and do not gun it or you'll be torqueing to the left. Landing is a tiny bit easier than take-off but you have to keep the power on all the way and let it roll out to a stop... actually flying it on the ground... or it will spin... and the gear will buckle.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    I also find that this plane gets into heavy stalls QUICKER than most Eflite planes...but as with any plane - you gotta keep the wing flying, or it won't keep flying ;)

    I have no idea of the sizes of kits that the P 38 Lightning, come in. So, how about the the largest that you can find with working flaps and landing gear? My favorite WWII Warbirds are F4U Corsair, P38 Lightning, and P51 Mustang, in that order. I've always been interested in the hobby. In 1980 I had a gas powered fly-by-wire F15 Eagle that I bought from Western Auto. The hobby just out grew me I was 13 at the time. Life happens. Thanks for the prompt reply last time. Keep up the good work and hope to see more content.

    As for the available P-38's out there today, we don't work with any of the companies that sell them, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them...we just haven't had an introduction to the right people at those distributors or MFG'ers. Like I mentioned before, we'd love to do one if you have one in particular that really stands out. Please do share, and I will try to ask them about the plane. P.S. If you link to it, the message will go into a "HELD FOR REVIEW" screen - don't worry, I can pull it out of quarantine when it gets here and I notice it. I'll be keeping an eye out for this.

    Beautiful flight Brian besides the little crash lol. Surprised how little was broken on it! It flies great for sure and takeoff for me isn’t too hard but when I land, right as I set the tail wheel down it does become a different animal like you said 🤣. It always runs off the side and skids on the mains. Always worried that they’ll break when it does that. I got mine for $75 (long story but Horizon screwed up an order LOL) and I’ve only flown it a few times. I always debate about selling it because I can make a lot from it but I just don’t think I can. It’s so beautiful and I paid $75 out of my pocket for it 😩. Thanks Brian, great video as always!

Having just watched your 1.2m mustang 2nd thoughts video, my own opinion is that IN THE AIR the 1.5m looks slightly more realistic but.....you are a very experienced RC pilot and this plane obviously is more prone to stalling so for every day flying, youve shown the 1.2m would be better for me.

    I have never liked this plane. Funny because the Eflite P-51 Blondie was the 3rd plane I bought and was the driving factor to improve my flying skills. This P-51 seems to be hard to takeoff (see Pilot Ryans maiden) and if you even have a hint of trouble landing, I’ll be destroying props and gear on a regular basis. I think there are planes and EDF’s on the market you just say, “It’s not for me.” Hard to believe this is the same manufacturer that came out with the 64mm a-10, 70 & 90mm Viper.

    I have this plane and feel that the recommended full flap deployment is very difficult to get a good landing with. That’s just my opinion. Landing with half flaps is a different story. • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    10 ай бұрын

    That's something I'll have to look into. I've always had more difficulty with this P-51 than virtually any others I've flown, but mostly due to the squirrelly tail wheel behavior. I can get her on the mains, and walk it around just fine, but once I drop down the tail wheel, it's a total gamble. As for flaps, for landing...I didn't even think about that being an issue...I just fly in under power. Thrust Reverse could help me get her landed on our primary runway.

    TONS of rudder....and slow as you can be on engaging to throttle. I agree it's tough, so you're definitely not off base.

    @@BrianPhillipsRC did you add any more throw to the rudder? I was using low rates so it's set to 70% I think.

    @@LoveRC in his original p51 1.5m video he changed the elevator servo hole position to give more throw - I did the same. Rates now at 70% with 40 expo on elevator with the increased throw from shifting the elevator control horn hole.

    @@EDF_FANatic and that helps keep it from going left?

    @@LoveRC no it doesn't help it from going left. It goes left on this bird due to the p factor from the large 4 blade propeller. The technique is to ease into the throttle, while applying slight rudder and aileron to counter the turn to the left until it is up on its wheels and tracking straight. Once you have enough speed then slowly apply up elevator to take off.

    So, you know how you recommend getting the 1.2m P-51 before getting the 1.5m. Well, I was wondering if the 1.2m P-39 Airacobra would be a suitable “trainer” for the 1.5m P-51? It is the same wingspan and it IS a warbird. Just curious as to your opinion on this.

    Sorry to have to report this to you, Matt...but the P-39 is not as easy to fly or land. It's not a bad plane, and I DO think you might love it, but it's not like the P-51 1.2m... P39 bit.ly/3aWhEmS P51 bit.ly/3ohT4zT

    Oh I have it and have flown it! You’re absolutely right, it is tricky, but I’ve pretty much ironed mine out to be a good flyer. So you think the 1.5m P-51 is EASIER?

    I had one when I was a kid, but I can barely remember anything about it. Might have been one my Dad had, and I would play with it...but wasn't allowed to actually fly it.

    I wanna get this model, but Im wary of the one-piece wing design. I had a Trojan T-28, and the one-piece wing ripped off mid flight and it crashed(which honestly was funny, because my t-28 had been a pain in the ass and I wasn’t too sad to see it go). All my other planes have two-piece wings with a rod that goes through the fuselage. What are your thoughts on one piece wings?
