From the Field -- E-flite P-51D Mustang 1.5m with Smart Flight Review

Ойын-сауық

Hey Everyone, at last here's my flight review of the E-flite P-51D Mustang 1.5m with Smart! This is a really nice model and I love how this mustang flies, it locks in so straight and true in the air. The Smart tech is a nice touch and can give you some meaningful alerts when setup right. I touch on that slightly, but will be doing a full dedicated discussion here in the future. Oh, and you might catch some of my amazing dance moves thanks to the prodding from my my son having a little fun in the background.😂 My full article with CG, throws and Dx file is at: thercgeek.com/EFP51

    Chris.... very nice review. Thanks Bud for answering my question about telemetry comparison between the DX18 and the SMART checker. I inquired about it on your “FROM THE BENCH...” video. I also asked Cody from Horizon the same question and although he didn’t actually show it - his reply back was spot on. He believed that the difference in readings would be not far off. You just confirmed it on this video. I’m sold. I just received the SMART checker today and also ordered the P51. I appreciate the follow up. 👍😊

    Horizon if you're reading, the 850mm Pitts tires are also too hard and cause bounce. I put soft tires on it and all is now well. I have seen this beautiful birds bounce in on several videos. Perhaps softer tires would smooth out the 1.5m P-51

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    Softer tires do help on this one. I replaced the stock tires with 3.5" robarts before the last flying outing and they really helped the airplane to stick those non-perfect touchdowns. I show what I did in my write-up (thercgeek.com/EFP51)

    I bought this plane and love it...great flyer, looks great but I have a couple of "nits". First, during high speed passes, the inner gear door covers "buzz" due to aerodynamic loads causing them to flex which causes the buzz. Second, the plastic tabs holding the slider tray which the battery is attached to have both broken off. The danger with this is if the battery tray slides back during high G maneuvers, the CG could shift backward. So far that hasn't happened but this could be a real problem.

    @lw2163163 жыл бұрын

    I bought one today. Have watched several videos on it by pilots I respect and you did the best take off and landing I've seen. The others let the plane get far left before takeoff and landed too fast I think and had trouble with the plane trying to ground loop. I'm guessing you brought the throttle up slowly and used a lot of right rudder on takeoff and then got the speed down a lot before landing - more toward a 3 point landing instead of landing on the mains only - is that right ? Do the winglets come off easy after flying to put it in the car for the trip home?

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! The airplane does require a considerable amount of right rudder and so it’s best to be prepared for that. It’s best to advance the throttle steadily while actively responding to the required rudder command. Also, make sure your tires are equally lose. If there’s a bind on one side, it’ll make it pull hard. On landing, touching down one wheel first really helps soften the touch down. The wheels are very hard and gear are springy and that was the best way I found to get the touchdowns smooth without bouncing. Replacing the tires with robart rubber tires also helps immensely as well (kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqZ8xsmgeNirgLA.html). One thing I noticed is that as the tail drops to the ground on the landing roll, the rudder isn’t super effective. So, be aware of that. The outer panels do come off pretty easily. If you stabilize the fuse with your arm, then grip and wiggle fore and back the outer panel it usually releases fairly easily.

    @@Thercgeek thank you, made 1st flight successfully - got left of center even though I thought I was ready for it - this plane pulls more than any plane I've had. I will replace tires- thanks for ref to your video. My 1st landing went well but on my 2nd flight not enough throttle and it stalled from knee high and broke a landing servo. May your skies be blue and your winds calm.

  • @Thercgeek

    Well, those are two very different models. The p51 is a high performance warbird which flies great, but is a bit less forgiving on the ground handling. The cub is much more forgiving all around but is not as high performance either.

    Hey guys just a quick question, what does it mean when your describing the throws on control surfaces, ie 10% expo? Otherwise fantastic video would really love one of these

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    3 жыл бұрын

    Expo is short for exponential which is an optional setting in the radio that can be set to help tune the feel of the airplane in flight. It helps desensitize the center of the sticks and can help provide a more linear feel or in some cases a more nonlinear feel depending on the goal of the tuning. 3d flyers use a lot of expo typically since they use very large maximum deflections for 3d aerobatics.

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    2 жыл бұрын

    In all honesty, right side up or upside down doesn’t make a difference in checking the cg. Generally it’s easier to check cg on a low wing with it inverted since it’ll hang a little easier. But for the size of the model and the stuff I have hanging overhead, right side up was less likely to have it bump into something flipping it over. 🤣

    Honestly, this model is a bit of an investment to risk as a first model. You have some experience which is good and if you can fly airplanes well in the sim, that’s a great head start, but I’d highly recommend looking at one of the smaller eflite Warbirds first. The p47 has some great ground handling which I think would be a great choice. Once you’re proficient with it, then consider moving up to the p51.

    Thanks! I’d say it’s a decent candidate for that depending on your level of experience. How proficient is your flying? What models have you been flying to date? It’s an expensive model as these go, but it’s also a very good flying model. You do have to be pretty active on the rudder for takeoffs which is typical for a warbird, but this one can be challenging at times. The tires are really hard also, so landings on hard surfaces can be challenging also. I recommend swapping the tires out for robart tires.

    Awesome, thanks! This model is not really meant to do tail slides though there’s no harm in trying. A dedicated aerobatic airplane with a more neutral cg would do that quite a bit better.

    Great video as usual, fast forwarded to the landing to see if you were going to bounce it-excellent landing. Been flying this warbird in Realflight 9.5 and even though I land it 100% of the time, it was impossible to do without bouncing it like many other pilots on KZread do. Took lots of practice to get to land smoothly without the bounce. It’s hard to master, but I’m working on it, still only landing it without a bounce 1 out of 4 landings. The key for me is about 1/3 throttle with full flaps as I shallow glide down and roll off the throttle just before the wheels touch. If the glide path is too steep or if you cut the throttle too early you get a big bounce. Hardest plane to land smoothly in Realflight for me so far.

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    2 жыл бұрын

    The model can be a bit challenging to land smoothly too. I put softer tires on which helped make it more forgiving and also touching down one wheel first makes a difference too. It wants a touch of power all the way to the ground though.

    Don't forget the SAFE feature of this SUAS. They are designed to enable this aircraft to fly like a trainer. I'm from the old school, where I had to learn to control everything manually, where the only self-righting characteristics was strictly from aerodynamics! This one, on the other hand, uses a gyro and other technology which helps it maintain stability in flight. A SIG Kadet will crash far more easily this one will!

    I fully appreciate where you're coming from and understand. Unfortunately, that's not the way of foam airframes these days. Balsa and composite ARFs are where that's at. And if you really want to go for it plans or scratch built.
