From the Bench -- Tire Swap for Easier Landings with the E-flite P-51 Mustang 1.5m

Ойын-сауық

The tires and suspension on the E-flite P-51 Mustang 1.5m are quite hard and so accomplishing nice soft landings with the airplane can be pretty challenging. Well, I swapped out the stock tires with Robart 3.5" diameter tires and the result was a night and day difference in the landing characteristics. The tires are quite soft and so as a result, I found the airplane was far less prone to bouncing and would stick even those less than perfect landings. So, I thought it would be worthwhile to put together a short video on this quick and simple tire swap. Also, if you want to know more about this model, check out my full review here: • From the Field -- E-fl...

Thanks so much for this video. I have not flown my new P-51 yet, due in part to the hard wheels/tires. I had been looking for an alternative set when I saw your video and have now ordered the Robarts. I do believe I could hammer in 16 penny spikes with the stock tires. HH/E-Flite would do well to consider putting decent tires on their models.

I felt a better solution was to use the stock wheel for the Robart tire. The stock wheel is loose in the Robart tire. But you can assemble and on one side glue in place. Then on the opposing side, after the glue has set, fill in with hot glue. The stock wheels have bearings and are really smooth. It just needs a better tire. This has worked really well for me. Trying to get the Robart assemblies to work was just cumbersome and disappointing.

Thanks so much Chris! You explained it very well so that even someone mechanically challenged such as myself can do it. When I pulled the first c clip off it went flying 8 feet away but I found it! I put the aluminum tube in a vise to hold it while I sawed off the little piece needed - got it too tight and bent the aluminum - but got it right in the end. Test flight went good with the new tires no more bounce. Are you using just a little tilt of the aileron to do that one wheel first landing ?

Thanks Chris! I just got this plane and have been hearing about the landing issues so this sounds like a good fix. However, I found a 3.5" Robart tire that specifies "Low Bounce", and I think another one that doesn't...which do you recommend? And speaking of weird ground issues on landings, I know you reviewed the Eflite FW-190 and it also has some landing/ground handling issues that stump me. I got their replacement soft tires and I found landing with half flaps made a difference, but it really wants to ground loop. Did you have any thoughts about it? Could it be related to their super bearings in their wheels? (You're the engineer, so help please!!!) Thanks again!! Rob

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    Жыл бұрын

You want the robart part number 118 for the straight tread and part number 137 for the diamond tread. Either will work just fine. The fw190 can definitely be challenging. The issue comes if there is any kind of side load imparted at the wheel due to the inward canted angle of the strut they’ll tend to grab. So, it’s really important to touch down as straight as possible without any kind of side slip. If you can land it on dirt or grass, it will be a lot easier to manage vs asphalt.

Clearly…but even the finest approach and softest flare could result in a bounce on asphalt with those extremely hard stock tires. On grass, it’s not an issue.

@@Thercgeek Clearly, we're clear about this. 🙂 Question, switching gears, I looked through your impressive video list and I like them all, but I didn't see the Freewing Avanti S Red High Performance 80mm in the mix. I know you can't demo everything, but I'm on the fence between the 6S Viper 90MM and this 6S P-51. I'm a strong intermediate flyer, so I'm looking to step-function it up a level.

I haven’t flown the avanti s, but I have heard good things about it. Otherwise, if given the choice between the 6s p51 and the 90mm viper, I’d choose the viper all day long. I generally prefer jets and it is a fantastic flying jet. Plus, being tric gear, ground handling is much easier to deal with. That said, the p51 is a very sweet flying warbird, but I just love my jets. 😁

Hello Chris! I hope you are staying safe and healthy! I love your videos and have learned a lot. Congratulations to you as the US Scale Masters Champion with your A-7II Corsair!! I have a Aero-Works Extra 260 Freestyle and I always have a issue putting on a new propeller tight enough with the cowl mounted and the nose cone backplate on. When I think I got it tight enough, I do a trial run up and it ends up spinning off. The motor I am using is a Hacker A30-12XL V3 motor. If you could do a short video with any tricks on how to tighten the prop nut tight enough, I would much appreciate it. You can DM me on FB rclyernc2001 if you prefer. Thank you 😊 Stay safe and healthy 🙏

Thank you! I appreciate your suggestion, though I’m not sure I have an effective cure for that. I run into that as well and mostly just try to manipulate my hold on the prop and spinner to create enough friction to get it to tighten harder. Usually that’ll work, sometimes not so much.

Thank you Chris. What I have done in the past on that motor is wrap a piece of narrow masking tape around the motor (in the opposite direction of tightening the prop nut), with extra tape hanging down to hold the motor from spinning when tightening the nut. I miss my gassers!! LOL 😂

Great video! Been using the old tape shim trick for years. I'm sure it will be very helpful to some people. Of course, if you're anal, you can drill out the Robart bushings to 5mm also.

i consider that a patch job. i can drill out the bushings with a drill much cleaner and it takes the same amount of time. paying $500 + dollars on the plane another $20+ on wheels then you use tape? like i said patch job. if your going that far then make it clean. glad i don't have him build my plane. i guess this is the engineer in me. what ever floats your boat or in this case gets you in the air. just not me. PS nice tip on the wheels to get.

I appreciate your sentiment, but the tape works great! Keep in mind that the tires are spinning around the axle with the aluminum tube, not around the tape, so even if the tape gets buggered up they’ll still rotate freely because of the aluminum tube. It’s simply there to fill up the space to remove any slop. I get having a cleaner bushing though. Holding those plastic bushings to drill them out is a PITA and machining new ones isn’t on the table for most hobbyists. So, tried to show an accessible solution. There’s always a different solution, all part of the hobby!

It’s also relative to the desired time one wants to spend too. This is a quick and easy way swap that anyone can do. If this were a multi thousand dollar turbine or warbird aircraft, I’d certainly take a different approach. For a foam warbird like this, it works well enough for me. I’ve been doing this a very long time and those who know my work know just how meticulous I am. 😊

The tape may eventually get hot from friction and the glue from the tape may make a bond between the hub and axle. Just saying. Be careful.
