Top RC 1/5 scale P-51D Electric 80cc 2nd hand restoration and maiden.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Having sold my 1/4 full composite CARF Spitfire as I didn't have the space, I reasoned a slightly smaller 1/5 scale warbird would be just the ticket. Happily a friend of mine had a well used full composite Top RC P-51D for sale and so the story begins....
Details of whats in the model below, you can also use the chapters to skip to the bits of interest.Its fair to say she's a keeper ;) Enjoy and thank you for stopping by.
Spec/set-up:
Turnigy RotoMax 80cc electric motor, YEP 180amp ESC, 12S (2 x6s) Turnigy 5000mah Heavy Duty lipo's, Aerostar 24x12 electric wooden prop, Jeti Ubec/switch, mix of blue bird and hitec servo's, FR-Sky radio system. AUW RTF 11.5kg, span 2.25m (89"), flight times 7-8mins. Note I've had to set my throttle max end point down to 75%. 100% at full throttle was just too much power!
Chapters:
Intro and overview of the work that has/had been done for the restoration. 00:00
Set-up at the field for maiden and more details of the work done on the model. 05:39
Maiden flight. 11:35
Short flight a week after the maiden once I'd got use to her more, made some positive changes and generally fallen in love with the model. 16:23

    Greetings Stuart! Nice restoration job and it seems to perform well now. The carbon spar is a great way to reduce weight without sacrificing any strength. It all seems fairly solid now. I have two much smaller P-51 D’s and they both fly well and look great, but they don’t sound like yours. There are sound modules that can be used to replicate a variety of sounds for various engines, however, they do add some additional weight and draw some power too. Personally, I like to fly them around sunrise 🌅 or sunset 🌅 when the silver paint reflects the colors in.the sky. Anyhow, I just wanted to congratulate you for the fine restoration and maiden flight. Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️ P.S. Happy Flying to you and your friends! ✈️

    More current when you spool up than when you’re at full power! Of course, because the rotor tries to catch up with the rotating field, the higher the “slippage” the higher is the current drawn, max current is when you firewall the throttle from standing still, that’s why they have a soft start feature. Try this, lock you prop and open full throttle, your speed regulator will burn out without a current limitation. BTW I noticed you’re a mode 2 flyer, me too 🤗 happy landings.

    Nice job, Stuart! I like the engine and the price very much. I think, with the new components and the conversion to electric drive, it has less weight than before, despite the repairs. I would leave the paintwork so bad - after all, this is an old model and has a natural "weathering" similar to a real airplane. I once saw a German Tronado close enough to touch. It had some bumps, not to mention scratches in the paint! But I would use or try a 4 blade propeller. Then it gets a little slower, but increases better, which fits better and, above all, the sound and the optics become more realistic! Greetings from Germany.

  • @stuartwarnerc

    Hi Armin. Yes the rotormax and YEP are a great combo, bags of power and they stay cool too and perform faultlessly. I do like the worn look of the model for sure, but I really want to carry that RAF scheme, which I can weather too of course. However I'm sticking with the prop that I've got. Really happy with it and it keeps things nice and simple too. I will paint it black however.

    Absolutely brilliant Stu!!! I really enjoyed this, and the fact that you traded one of your most beloved aircraft (a Spitty) for this, speaks volumes about your realization that perhaps the Spit was just too big for your current hangar space and transpo. I too am befuddled by lack of storage and transpo for larger models, hence the lack of any of those in my hangar. That said, she really flew great and BOY, those landings were spectacular! I agree with you, she doesn't seem to have a lot of top-end (but the prop-tips seem to be breaking the sound barrier based on the noise she's making), but MAN does she have some grunt over the top of that loop you ripped on the second flight! Cheers to you my friend and all the best from your friend in the Mojave Desert!

    Wow, it flies incredibly nice. Immediately had to watch this, as I'm considering giving my 1:5 Top Flite Mustang the electric treatment as well. It hasn't flown for 15 years and was always underpowered, so it never flew much. Very interesting that you can get away with 12S 5000mah and still get good flight times, I thought bigger batteries would be needed.

  • @stuartwarnerc

    @stuartwarnerc

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Thomas, thanks! Yeah I was really please and impressed with the turnout of the set-up, good flight times, but if I wanted I could try 6000mah for a little more. But honestly, I mostly fly it at half throttle, full is just too much, so often come down at 7mins with a good 30% in the packs. I would say definitely give your TF P-51 the electric treatment. And can't say enough about the Rotomax 80cc motor, power and quality for a amazing price, and the Aerostar props, that's what's given it 'that' sound ;)

    @@stuartwarnerc thanks, and with the additional labour day discount this became irresistible, amazing value. Just put in an order for your exact setup with motor, ESC and prop. Now I just need to figure out the engine mount. Playing with the idea of a four bladed prop too. You know, just knowing there's a four blader on the nose... Curious if over-propping a bit might work with a careful throttle hand and a current sensor / amp alarm. If nothing else, a fun experiment, and I can switch back to the two blade for performance (or if it doesn't work at all).

  • @stuartwarnerc

    @stuartwarnerc

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thomas Berg hey thank you so much, I hope your as happy with your set-up as I am. Don’t forget you’ll have to program the ESC though with the card, I believe it comes set for heli by default. Thing is about 4 blade they may look more scale, but they are less efficient and typically expensive too, plus it would not be a scale diameter prop on the model. I’d rather keep it simple with a two blade that’s more efficient, cheaper and looks close to scale diameter when flying anyway.

    Stuart...Very nice model. Glad to see that you adopted this P-51 Mustang and kept it electric. I do like gasser models but the electric is a lot more convenient and much quicker getting her into the air. Sounds great too. Looks like you are progressing very well getting her tuned to your liking. Wish you luck and would like to see a follow up video on which livery you choose. Thanks for sharing.. From a fan in the USA. 🇺🇸 P.S. You always welcome to come back to Triple Tree Aero. 👍☺️

    Hey, yeah it is a lot more convenient, I think especially so for these inline birds. I have a P-47 the same size, now with its big round nose the gas engine it has in there is staying. I don't mind gas, but its got to be a good running and sounding engine with little complications in terms of pumping access and maintenance.

    @@payitfwdrcl6171 its a travesty to spend any time or even say you own a model of this size and magnitude and you willingly cut its nuts off with an electric motor. Convenience is for the mentally inept. Tuning a motor is simple and only necessary twice a year. "Fiddling" is just gassing up. I can keep my birds in the air almost as long as you charge your battery. Yet electric is good for what? 5 minutes flight? At $160 per battery? Thats a joke.

    @@krotchlickmeugh627 Well, all opinions are welcome, even wrong ones LOL. I think you can see that my Mustang is anything but lacking in the nuts department, in fact at a warbirds event this weekend at the club it by far out paced the gasers. That being said, I love gas engines, but for me I prefer them in big cowls.

    @@stuartwarnerc Got ya, thank you. I’ve been flying a bunch of big scale electric planes. Have the Carbon Z 2.2m Cub, Cessna 152, the Hobby King Yak-11 and new variant of the Carbon Z T-28. Also have the EDF Freewing T-33 which absolutely rocks. All of these aircraft are a blast, but I really have to get into big, gas powered airplanes. Is that a big jump in complexity when it comes to operating and maintaining gas engines? Looking forward to a P-51 like this and many other aircraft.

    @@CJR505 it’s not that there is so much a jump in complexity, rather some additional steps and procedures that need to be understood. Electric is great, but in my mind too easy, you just plug in a battery and pretty much it always works. Gas you need to invest a little more time and thought to get it running but that process brings a better sense of satisfaction and achievement in my mind. As long as you have someone at the club that can talk you through it initially you’re golden.
