In the book, the bugs are stand-ins for Communists. Specifically, a species in which communism is not only compatible, but perfectly optimal for. Of course, the natural consequence is that their way of life is incompatible with humans. There’s no real jingoism on that front, just two powerful species and a finite number of planets and resources. Indeed, a major thread is that the Federation wants to understand the bugs and end the war.

So instead they hire cut-rate foreign actors -- usually bad ones -- to play American characters with laughably bad American accents. Then they stash the massive profits in off-shore tax havens while claiming the movie cost half a billion dollars to make -- "cgi!" -- and promote -- "China!" -- even though they spend next to nothing. And the corporate executives and stockholders cheer and cheer and cheer.

I love how at the end of the movie, half of the troops consists of kids. No matter how much new tech the humans are pumping out and how much troops they have, the bugs are still winning.

They killed those bugs for Democracy!

Gotta be honest, this movie still looks good even now.

"Or like half a clip when the plot demands it" That's not a plot hole by the time the plot demanded it they were experience enough to know what part of the bug to shoot to put it down quick after serving under Michael Ironside. Dougie Houser even did an infomercial showing them where to shoot after the disaster at Big K.

Remember in the movie how Carmen's mentor got killed because their ships were too close together and the bugs were using artillery to blast em out of the sky Then like five minutes later Carmen did the exact same move which got her stranded on the planet... Not a great plan

“COME ON YOU APES YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER!?” That line and ending still gives me chills to this day, especially with the music in the finale. Casper Van Dien is such a beast in the movie, still looks badass today.

Starship Troopers is the best movie ever. It has EVERYTHING. Badass lines, violence, explosions, love, intrigue, mystery, naked chicks, Casper Van Dien being handsome (with a butt shot), a coed shower scene, NPH, a Busey, a raptor on the left side of the screen at 1:21, Michael Ironside being badass, arena football, brain bugs, the game changing flip six three hole, and laser tag. What more could one ask for?!

It's a satire on every militaristic regime in history.

You had me at *"NOT AT ALL BASED ON THE CLASSIC SCI-FI NOVEL,"* Every fan of the writings of the late great Robert Anson Heinlein thanks you! Also love how this armor got used again (like in FIREFFLY) because it sure wasn't the awesome battle gear described in the book!

Exactly how it was for me. When it came out and I was a teenager, it was a great action film. I watched it 5-6 times and still didn't get the hidden messages. Even at some point I thought it was a film supporting colonialism. Then when AVGN made a video talking about it, I went back and watched it carefully, not just cheering the action scenes. So when I watched it 35+ years old, it felt totally different. It's actually a very smart satire movie.

The fact that everyone is talking about their good old days in the infantry, while they are missing limbs That the lesson of the movie is that violence solves everything. While at the same time the violence in the movie solves nothing

I have only seen it once, in the theater opening weekend. I was so hyped because I had read the book 20 times. I HATE this movie. It obviously is a talented and excellent job of communicating the message Verhoevan wanted to, but doing that to my favorite book. Life is pain princess and anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you something. I keep telling myself this, it helps.

You should check out the Japanese anime from the 80s it's more on point with the book.

Neil Patrick Harris explained why the bugs never died quickly at 3:27. You have to shoot them in the central nervous system. Those people were just shooting all over the place!

No wonder. They never trained firing on nerve stems. They practised firing against human opponents who died quickly. Aside from being the most dangerous firing course ever designed, it did not teach them the muscle memory required in a battle situation.

I am old, and I remember when this movie came out. One of the factors that really had me hyped was learning that one of the actors on the film had their finger go numb from too much shooting. And I think at the time the movie had used the most ammunition of any movie to date. Gotta admit that is some epic stuff.

"The movie that is nothing like the book, because Paul Verhoeven didn't read it."

"They put the hotsi in Nazis" Such great writing! What a way to start the day!

The satire in this movie was so obvious and blatant its puzzling why it flew over people's head.

Watch it on BluRay. It is gorgeous even now.

Just wanna add the reason it takes less to kill them towards the end is due to the education about the bugs throughout the film. There's literally a segment in the middle where neil explains it. It's the unexperienced spray and pray to hardened battle pros at the end story line.

This was the first movie I watched on the theater all by myself when I was a kid. I remember leaving the theater thinking how badass and mature I was. Also, I remember thinking this movie was so realistic, graphics wise. God, I miss being that naive!

Hearing Casper Van Dien, that was awesome! SO GOOD! hahahhaha

Such an epic name too.

When I watched Starhip Troopers for the first time I could not understand why people hated it, I realized it after several years and after reading a book... this movie is soooo brilliant. Verhoeven is one of the most underppreciated directors in history...

Loved it when it came out, and still do.

I just rewatched this recently, what a time for an honest trailer.

What seemed like silly action movie fun is actually a really deep commentary on American society.

Is it just me or does Casper Van Dien look like Doom Guy's face from the classic Doom games

Love this movie, my mom took me when I was little having no idea....when walking out she said “I’m going to be sick”....she was born in Buenos Aires lol

I remember making Starcraft custom maps based on this movie. I still feel like making Starcraft custom maps based on this movie. 10/10 would make again.

I avoided it when it came out because I'd read the book and heard it went way off the material. Then 15 years later I'm seeing it at a film festival screening.

Hahaha! Oh Jesus, this actually had me laughing out loud! Best honest trailer in years! Thanks! It's also a great movie

I remember seeing a trailer for this with Blur's Song 2 and Rico making the mock nuclear explosion with the nuke. It was the coolest thing I had seen to date. Then I walked out pissed off that the movie didn't have the song in it... Then I bought everything with the name on it anyway.

Her death scene was so traumatic. Everyone wanted it to be Carmen but Verhoeven is too smart for that.

I don't care what anyone says this movie still holds up to this day, is a true CLASSIC. Entertaining, fun and a total syfy epic!
